Adobe posts Lightroom 4.4 and ACR 7.4 release candidates

Adobe has announced 'release candidate' versions of Lightroom 4.4 and Adobe Camera Raw 7.4. As usual, the latest near-complete versions add support for recent cameras. What makes this release especially significant, however, is improved support for Fujifilm's X-Trans sensor models, including the X-Pro1 and X-E1. The Lightroom update also corrects a series of bugs present in the current version of the software. As usual, release candidates are considered well tested but not final.

We've subjected some test images to the latest processing offered in Adobe Camera Raw 7.4rc, and have compared the results with those from v4.3, the out-of-camera JPEGs and Capture One Pro. Click here to see how it performs.

New Camera Support in the Camera Raw 7.4 and Lightroom 4.4 Release Candidates

  • Canon EOS-1D C
  • Casio Exilim EX-ZR700
  • Fujifilm X100S
  • Fujifilm X20
  • Pentax MX1
  • Nikon 1 J3
  • Nikon 1 S1
  • Hasselblad Lunar
  • Leica M

Fixed issues in Lightroom 4.4

The following issues have been fixed in Lightroom 4.4 release candidate:

  • The crop overlay tool resized incorrectly when used in conjunction with the “Constrain to Crop” checkbox in the Lens Correction panel
  • Background graphics were not correctly rendered within the Book Module
  • The supplied lens profile for the Sony RX-1 did not contain vignette information
  • Previews of photos in portrait orientation were blurry when viewed in the filmstrip in the Develop module. (Mac only)
  • Stack badges displayed the wrong count when creating new stack that included a preexisting stack.
  • The Filter scrollbar within the Library module was not rendering properly.

How about a *true* fullscreen loupe view (where the image extends fully to the screen edge, with no flyout bars on the edges or blank background space).
Instant access to the UI (folders, filmstrip, etc) in Loupe mode is nice but it's crazy that LR still doesn't have a true full screen view.

Is this something one stops caring about with a huge monitor??

Has anyone read "Improved interactive performance at intermediate zoom levels (e.g., 33% and 66%)" in camera raw 7.4 rc1 release notes?
That's a big improvement!

No, no and no.. this 4.4RC is a pity. Have made some tests and compared to 4.3 release : ok, some little improvment in color area, actually not always visible, BUT what's sure is that images are becoming much more smoother and a little detail enhancement with sharpening slider is not the right answer (imho). Have a look on PhotoNinja and you'll see the huge gap of image quality..! I've removed this pityfull 4.4RC and replaced with the "good old 4.3". Ok, it's not perfect but it hasn't this blurred rendering, completely unnatural, which is finally really disturbing.

In Library mode, with single-photo preview:

When one hits a portrait photo in the film strip and then hits a landscape photo in the film strip, the preview for the latter will be displayed blurry. The only way to make 4.3 display landscape previews properly (sharply) is hit landscape photo before another landscape photo.

This bug is present in Windows version of 4.3. It sounds quite similar to the "fixed" bug mentioned above, but for some reason they say it is "Mac only". I surely hope they fixed it in Windows version as well.

+1 I see this too and very much hope it's fixed in 4.4. Interestingly, I see the bug 18MP images but not 12MP. wierd..

Does anyone else experience a problem with LR "Secondary Display" window, which randomly appears as a small square window even after you've closed it?

ACR 7 extracts raws from the DP2x. So does ACR 6.xx.

ageha:

Some Sigma raws are already extractable with ACR; true for more than a year now. So that's not "never".

No, raws from the 14X3 Foveon sensor are not extractable with ACR yet.

Where is the support for the Sigma DP1 Merrill & DP2 Merrill?
Rumor has it that the ball lies squarely in Adobes court, Sigma
having supplied all necessary information.

The pre-release versions likely have extra debug code enabled so it will be slower than a full release version.

Very minor update, with no new features. They're probably saving the good stuff for Lightroom 5.

How about PNG support?!

I sure hope Adobe fixes the errors when you try to move multiple videos and the one with the preview showing will not move, and there is no dialog to ignore or resolve the issue.

Then remember what filters settings I set either globally or for each individual folder. Currently every time you change filters it resets to none. Absurd that they can't at least make these features optional.

I also can't stand the auto-eject card after importing images and video and that you can't move data on import even though it is greyed out just to tease you.

Why would anyone buy a NEX-7 and a handful of lenses, plus a NEX-6 as second body, and an RX1 as a complement, when you could get a Hasselblad Lunar body made out of the finest Italian wood and leather, for the same money?

Yeah, I wondered about that. The crummy Hasselblad-Lunar website still just shows weird mockups and poorly done renderings. The raw file format is more real than the camera!

Strange that Hasselblad are still going thru with the most joked about camera at Photokina. They sure aren't your father's Hasselblad. The solution would be to bring back Victor but that's not an option.

They're not reporting including them. However, lenses that include correction as part of their design usually have those applied behind-the-scenes.

Only the JPG files have profiles in camera on the XF lenses. Comparing a JPG and RAF file together (especially the 18mm lens) you can really see the difference.

I'm not sure about Camera Raw but Lightroom does distortion correction for 18mm, that's for sure.

It is supposed to use the improved demosaicing algorithm that Fuji gave to Adobe. That hopefully means less color bleeding and improved detail with foliage.

PdF Ninja, in my own findings as well it is much improved. In some of my more critical images I'm not seeing the watercolour effect or colour smearing.

Are there any improvements for other cameras? For example the Sony RX100, I allways get very strange yellow-orange colours out of raw for faces in available light. In JPGs it looks better but using high iso it shows less details than raw development.
