Phase One releases Capture One Express 7

Phase One has announced Capture One Express 7, the latest version of its enthusiast Raw image processing tool. A stripped-down version of Capture One Pro, Capture One Express 7 gains features including HDR processing, lens correction and digital asset management tools. Express doesn't support tethered shooting, but images can be viewed remotely and wirelessly using either the Capture Pilot iOS app or a web browser on other devices. Capture One Express 7 will cost $99/€69 with discounted upgrades.

In my Nikon DSLR days (2004 - 2008) I used Capture One LT 4 for all my raw processing. It had the ability to export your results in a number of formats, including TIFF and JPG. I don't know when they dropped it, but for Express 7 this capability isn't there! You can only save in the format of the original. It's absurd that you have to spring for the Pro version to be able to export into a different format from the original. Capture One Express 7 seems to be extremely weak on features compared to Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 anyhow. Not worth the $69 for the upgrade. Unfortunately, I had too much faith in progress and paid my $69 without even trying Express 7. Yes, I was plain stupid.

C1 gives great I.Q but the lens correction support is poor compared to LR4's extensive support...

Capture One is my preferred converter and this upgrade is to my mind worth the money. I think the only downside, and this could apply to other converters also, is when they state a camera is supported they really mean that the converter will open the raw file, but, and it's a big but, are the lens profiles in there for your particular lens? I just looked at Nikon, only 20 lenses supported and Sony only 2! (one of them being a Sigma lens!) I cannot see the point of trying to convert an image which has not / cannot be corrected for distortion, especially in terms of chromatic abberation (CO does a great job generally with this). I have a Sony RX100, it says the camera is supported but the raw images appear distorted and cannot be corrected so to my mind, the camerea is not supported. Any more thoughts on this?

BTW: There are now minus values on the Clarity and Structure sliders for softer images and you can export to JPEG, TIFF, DNG, PNG and wait for it... PSD!

Thanks for this article.

I always stayed away from Phase One and in my mind that spells 'alot of money', cameras, etc.

but I clicked the link and downloaded the 254MB file.

Ran Express and can clearly see the detail in my D5100 RAW files that I have been missing using other converters.
I compared several. I did not compare DXO yet.
The Express white balance tool is also remarkable.

When I get my D7100 I will likely buy the full program.

I just completed two shoots today and after my testing of express I reworked both of them to much better final images than I obtained with my current workflow.

Despite horrendous interface and strange workflow DXO was always my preferred tool due to ability to squeeze the last drop of original images and great lens correction. I would kill for DXO supporting X-trans, but I doubt it will ever happen. Wonder how it compares to new C1 for Nikon RAW.

I think there are some differences in the color tools for Pro v. Express. Not sure.. check if you are interested in the software.

Still no camera support for Pentax K30 even though it has frequently been requested.
How hard would it be to make a color profile for this camera?
Support for Fuji x trans is appreciated though, where others are finding that a task and a half.
