Sony firmware for NEX-7, NEX-6, NEX-5R,NEX-5N and E-mount lenses

Improvements always welcome. I don't understand why they insist on tethered updated when almost everyone else allows using the memory card for getting the update onto the camera.

If you have a NEX7 you probably have already updated your firmware to take advantage of the much needed movie button disabling routine. But, they didn't go far enough with just providing the ability to disable the movie button. If you mistakenly touch the button while shooting stills, it pops up an annoying and time consuming message that tells you have disabled the movie function. Typically this happens at the exact same instant when you are releasing the shutter - damn, missed another one. An annoying little notification on the status screen would seem to be enough to alert you to the fact that you have disabled the function, instead of disrupting the whole capture sequence. A tiny bit of common sense would be helpful here Sony. Oh well, at least they are admitting that they screwed up when placing the button where they did in the first place.

One of the amazing things about this discussion, and similar ones elsewhere is that two years ago, when the NEX-7 was first announced, it was universally deemed the best thing since sliced bread. Reviewers who had never even seen the actual camera fell over themselves finding appropriate superlatives. It took a year from the first announcement for Sony to actually produce the camera and in that time, the enthusiasm raged unabated.
And now ... it seems few people have much good to say about the poor NEX-7.
I did not have much faith in web-based reviews at the time this all happened, and I have even less now.
The whole thing, though, was a triumph for Sony marketing which correctly assessed the leming-like nature of both reviewers and consumers.

when I see the NEX-7 update described at Sony, this update contains only a compatibility issue with the 16-50 lens. The other 4 points have been included in version 1.01. So, if you do not own the retractable lens, this update is obsolete. I doubt that Sony has made any further improvement to the 6 improvements that where included in 1.01. I wait with this until someone reports any improvement outside of the lens issue.

For the 5N, first we got "peaking", now extended bracketing!

Yes I would like to be clear on what 'as well as a number of other improvements and bugs fixes' were, from the list most of the improvements were implemented in 1.01. Perhaps these have been further enhanced, no doubt we will never know. Still not having to wait an age for SEL1650 to retract is an instantly obvious improvement.

I have a sneaking suspicion this will not fix the fact that the NEX-6/7 have unusably lame viewfinder optics and squish a 16:9 menu interface onto a 4:3 screen. They squished the original menus of the SLTs onto the current models LCDs, so I doubt they care about this either. Weak sauce lazy crap.

For 5n- any improvement in autofocus? Are raw files still readable in camera raw?

Does anyone know what "other improvements and bugs fixes " means...or is that a generic statement. I do not have the 16-50 lens and if there is no need to "wipeout" current settings (does firmware update do that?) then I won't update. Any suggestions.

Updated SEL 50. It ain't noticeably faster... :( Couldn't even tell the difference at first.
