Fujifilm updates firmware for X-Pro1, X-E1 and XF 35mm F1.4 R lens

Fujifilm has released firmware updates for its X-Pro1 and X-E1 mirrorless cameras and the XF 35mm F1.4 R lens. The updates for both cameras introduce compatibility with the XF 14mm F2.8 R wideangle lens, and promise improved autofocus performance. Version 1.04 for the X-E1 also includes tweaks for users of external remote releases and the MIC-ST1 stereo microphone. Meanwhile v2.02 for the XF 35mm lens promises better autofocus accuracy, and requires the latest camera firmware to be fully effective.

I currently have FW version 2.00 on my X Pro 1. If anyone knows where I can find the interim firmware (2.01), I 'd love to know, as it doesn't seem to be available on Fuji's site. This makes it impossible to upgrade to the latest firmware. Very, very frustrating.

With this update, I can confirm the AF work really snappy on 35mm lens. I want that 14mm...

When I was researching about X-Pro 1, the dilemma was either Fujifilm X-Pro 1 or the super fast AF from Olympus OM-D. OM-D is really a fast camera. But for me, for superfast AF, I should stick to my Nikon D7000 while this mirrorless camera should be the main camera which I can use daily and with superb image quality...

XE-1 body and 35 lens updates installed without a hitch. Low light AF speed improved significantly. Thanks Fuji. How about focus peaking in the next release?

Even if the big X Fuji's focused with a crank handle on the side, they would still represent phenomenal value. For many these cameras represent a road into gear with build and image quality otherwise out of reach.

Sigh. I guess all my hoping and praying for fixes to the X100's various focusing issues including poor manual focus, sketchy auto focus, slow auto focus, etc etc, not to mention work Fuji still needs to do and fix in the firmware is not working. A bit disappointed to see that they've apparently given up on the X100 (while doing these updates for the Pro and other models)

X100 is more than 2 years old while X-Pro1 is less then one year old and X-E1 is a few months old. Due to this there are a differences between level of support.

Now it auto focuses better than the camera it is targeted to compete with: the Leica M. Of course, it did before. Leicas don't auto focus.

Also auto focuses faster than a Leica M6.

Not faster than the Olympus. But my images look better, and I don't have a menu driven "P" mode system.

Get your expectations in line with the product you are reviewing.

I gave up on the X system and switched to MFT Olympus. I was tired of the slow AF and to be honest, why accepting all these firmware updates to fix the AF when Olympus in firmware 1.0 in the E-PL5 has a multiple times faster AF already. The difference is really like day an night.
Sad that this good image quality even after more than a year still lacks a decent AF.

I also gave up on the X system - I found the speed and accuracy of the auto focus system unacceptable, even after the new firmware was supposed to resolve it. Like you say, the image quality is great. I absolutely loved the images I was lucky enough to capture but auto focus was no good. I'm sure if I was prepared to put the work in with the auto focus, I could have eventually got consistent results but wasn't willing to. I bought a Leica M6 instead and am happy as larry with that!

I'll definitely look at future versions of the X Pro 1 (X Pro 2, perhaps?) though.

I value IQ over the speed of AF - it's the photograph I'm after not the medal in speed of AF

I returned my XP1 very soon after purchase. Mind you - I'm a Nikon shooter. Not excactly overwhelmed by any sort of customer appreciation or acknowledgement of any problems.

I wish I hadnt judged Fuji by the same standards.
They seem to listen to their customers. They should be rewarded for that. Seriously.

I just firmware updated my X100 after 6 months of no usage (v 1.3). Trust me. They LISTEN.

I have the Oly OM-D - not in the market for a Fuji right now. But... If you have one (XP1) - count your blessings. They'll continue to improve it. Unlike others. Likewise for the EM-5.

Upgraded, my X pro1 does not miss a shot. great. Manual focusing using AE/AE L is very quick.

Still no minimum shutter speed setting in Auto ISO!

Fuji, why haven't you been listening to the hundreds of requests from X-Pro 1 (and recently XE-1) users for the past year?

And even dpreview has pointed out the lack of this feature...

If Fuji like any good Japanese company follows the whole Monozukuri principles then it is likely they won't a) listen & b) just release a hardware upgrade because software isn't really all that important :) and they can make more money releasing a hardware upgraded version with many features that could be achieved in software also likely to c) because their programmers are inept and or d) management is backwards and not interested in listening to the programmers of the consumers.

Either way - this is as good as it will get until the X Pro 1s comes out ....

@hexxthalion: M works with Auto ISO untill you run into overexposure at the set shutter speed. That's a hack but not a solution ;)

@LetsDoTheStapler: That is how Apple would do it, but Fuji has been seriously updationg and adding features to their X-Cameras. That is why so many users are unhappy about the omission of this particular feature.

Well apple is still effectively supporting the iPhone 3GS with software updates, apple whilst bringing In new hardware it's IOS system and many new features still work on previous models (where possible of available)

Fuji might be seriously updating but seem to neglecting some very very very basic requests.

Don't understanding what is SS setting in Auto ISO, This is a half manual camera, I think if you need that why buy a compact camera with fully auto function ? I always set it to Aperture Priority to get the best DOF.

@smatty - not a hack - I always shoot at manual, I like to be in control of captures I take, feels more satisfying that it's me who takes picture not some chip in the camera.

That's why I dumped my dSLR - too computerised to my taste.

@LetsDoTheStapler: While Apple is still supporting the 3GS, most of the new features can't be used on it. Same with AirPlay mirroring from a Mac to your Apple TV in Mountain Lion if it is not at least a 2011 model Mac. While Apple reasons it is due to hardware speed limitations the App "AirParrot" even let's my 2008 iMac stream (mirror) to my Apple TV...

And why was my iPad1 not supported in iOS updates after 2 years any more? It was too old? Never mind new features, but I would love to get at least security fixes patched...

@ChrisChan: I am not quite sure if I get what you are saying, but I too shoot 95% of the time in Aperture priority mode to controll DOF. But I also use Auto ISO up to 6400 to get decent non blurry sutter times. But with the 18mm lens I am limited to 1/30s. That is fine for landscapes but not for people photography. I would like to limit to 1/125 at the cost of a higher ISO value choosen by the X-Pro 1.

@hexxthalion: I know that full manual can be rewarding. I like to leave my DSLR home as often as I can and much rather take the X-Pro 1 when I have the chcance. But I do a lot of street and people photography in changing light situations and beeing stuck at 1/30s in Auto ISO with the 18mm lens attached I get motion blurr from people on most of my photos.

The Fuji X100 has been offering minimum shutter speed control and it works flawlessly. I (and many others) just don't understand why Fuji has not added this feature that has been asked for by so many X-Pro 1 photographers for such a long time?

@smatty - when shooting on streets, my X100 is also in manual - 1/125 speed and aperture set between f/5.6-f/11 and auto iso on - the same setting with my X-Pro1 and if needed I lower speed to 1/60 and larger aperture. Once you start to use M mode more often it will come naturally to you and you'll be able to hit correct exposure values with better accuracy as the time goes by - trust me, you'll be very fast - street = zone focusing for me at least

No wonder, I only have the 35mm f1.4, I have to check with my friend who has the 18mm lens. For 35mm, there is no limitation on shutter speed. Also, I don.t like auto ISO, if you use it, can not capture the mood. Exposure always enhanced by the chips (computer). I only change the exposure compensation dial if I needed. I use old manual lenses a lot too, e.g. Leica, Minolta, Nikon etc. I have no problem for this computer gimmick.

ChrishsChan, I don't think you even understand what we're talking about, not only regarding the minimum shutter speed feature, but Auto ISO in general.

The Auto ISO feature of the X-Pro 1 doesn't have a minimum shutter speed feature, and with the 35 mm, the minimum shutter speed is roughly 1/50th of a second, and cannot be changed manually by the user.
