Panasonic announces DMC-ZS30 and DMC-ZS25 cameras

By dpreview staff on Jan 7, 2013 at 18:30 GMT

Panasonic has announced the Lumix DMC-ZS30 (TZ40 in Europe) and ZS25 (TZ35 in Europe) compact superzoom cameras. The higher specified ZS30 features a 20x optical zoom, 1080p60 video and Wi-Fi capability. The biggest new feature on offer, however is Near Field Communication (NFC), a close-proximity radio connection that the ZS30 can use to initiate a Wi-Fi connection with a compatible device simply by tapping the two together. The cameras will be available at the end of March in both black and white color schemes.

Many Android and Windows smartphones feature NFC communication but it is not available on current iPhone models.

ordered it online today from sig electronics, $339.99, didn't want to pay another $10 for shipping so I'd just pick this up in the store. can't wait to try this camera out!

here it's the link for the camera if anyone else is interested to buy this

I bought one of these today, but did not pick it up (long story). I noticed though that there is not way to do a FLASH FILL in the auto mode (red thingy). No way to force the flash unless you go to an override mode, which I never want to do. This could be a problem. I take a lot of shots of people outside of bright buildings. Thanks.

Ever since the ZS7, Panasonic has repeatedly proposed --

1. Worse picture picture quality
2. Longer zoom
3. More gimmicks.

Right now, there user base is 100% first-time owners. NOBODY in their right mind buys a late-model lumix, if they own an earlier-generation lumix.

I think is the first camera with zoom remote capability by wi-fi. As I know there is no one camera with this capability until this tz40. I'm waiting for an fz with capability like that. But ofcorse with fz200 lens and why not with bluetooth, nfc and high speed in hd slowmotion. Something like 200 or just 400 fps.

They need to increase the min shutter speed to something like 1/4000, and make the aperture range from F2-4.5, while keeping the zoom range the same.

Another unimaginative stretch in lens range and more MP.

I's like to see someone carve out a new niche and do maybe a quality compact 10x zoom, with a large 12 MP sensor, preferably in a body not much bigger than a TZ.

Oh god... Panasonic are no good whatsoever when it comes to controlling noise from ISO 800 onwards on their compact camera range... and now they go and up the ante with 16 & 18 MP small sensors... Bet anything above ISO 400 will pretty much be a hit and miss affair...

I bet they're those cheesy Live MOS sensors... unfortunately...

Just look at how bad the TZ-30 / ZS-20 image quality was... blotches galore...

Improved battery life to get to 260 shots???
Maximum shutter speed is 1/1200, hello over-exposure in sunny days.
But I do like the new grip, and the promise of the 5 axis stabilization. i own a Fuji F770exr, and over 250mm eq, it's useless as the monitor image is so shaky I can't even compose correctly.
Yet, i hope Panny copies Fuji or Olympus colours. their colour signature is so flat and awful.

I wonder if the gps is getting quicker these days. I turn the camera on for 30 seconds or less then off again and my old Sony HX5 couldn't connect in that time.

Look at the ISO 1600 studio shots in imaging-resource.com. In the photos, the proportional scale is 100% mushed-out by the poor sensor quality. Any earlier model (except the ultra-horrible ZS20) beats this model.

Way to go Panasonic, image quality is almost a new low!

LX7 was $249 on sales. Do you expect that camera any cheaper? But 3.8x and 20x are very different things, on not very differently sized sensors so no much help from digital zoom (unlike, say, RX100).

"The new LUMIX DMC-ZS30 is Panasonic’s most advanced photo and video hybrid compact camera to date. "

Really? What about LX7 then? Marketing departments must be going crazy trying to explain the need for so many different point-and-shoots.
