Canon releases promised Firmware v2.0.0 for EOS 7D: Digital Photography Review

I think lots of the changes are really cosmetic and not usefull for a photographer.
All the in-camera-editing stuff for example.
But there is a Big Miss I think. I mean the possibility to have the distinct fine autofocus tuning for the max and min focal length of the Zoom lenses.
This is pure software stuff and could reduce a real problem with the Canon-AF-Saga.
The problem is not only saving dollars for the repair centers, but to have poperly focused pics, as those centers most of times don't admit the problem and not accept the lens for recalibration (or they return the lens in the same state you give them!)

Being able to develop RAW images while tweaking the settings is a useful addition for photographers on-the-go that want to upload their photos directly over their smartphone 3G/4G data networks.

I discovered minor problem (typo) while trying out the RAW Imaging Processing and resizing an image. When the file is being saved, the camera displays, "Saving edited movie", rather than displaying, "Saving edited image". It is a minor typo and does not affect the saving process. It's not a big deal, but it is rather distracting. I understand Canon makes typos on the foreign language settings on new cameras and later updates them to fix the typos, so I wonder if they will figure it out later and fix it. I don't have this problem on my Mark 3.

Yes, an updated manual exists online but this is not useful for peoples who carried the Canon 7D without taken a computer, isn’t? And to print us 292 pages, in A4 or US format is not a solution. Canon, in my opinion, should update the manual, which had been delivered with the 7D not only for actual owners but also for the next purchasers! Somebody who purchases NOW a new 7D, hopefully already with firmware 2.0.0, will receive in the box, I hope, a new manual.

I wonder why there aren't many hackers who do this type of FW hacks to improve cameras. (I know Lumix GH2 has been hacked to produce super nice videos.) That should be a lot of fun. Imaging porting the best user interface or features from one brand to another.

Bravo canon, some people think that there will be no 7D Mark 2.
Since the 1.3 sensors cameras are dead, the next 7D will be a killer camera and still adopting the 1.6 sensors with the same and sophisticated AF of the Flagship 1D X and will shoot up to 10 FPS with a bunch of new features, wildlife and sports shooters will be very happy for the next flagship APS C with a stronger and better built.
I am going to start saving like how I did with the 1D X, the current 7D will be outstanding for many years again even when the 7D 2 is out.

In fact, according to some sources (what we call a rumor) there might be a 7D Mark 2 (cf: http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/cameras/Canon_7dmk2.html ) and even a 6D (cf: http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/cameras/Canon_6d.html ) in the coming. Wait and see...

Anyway, I'm satisfied of my (updated) 7D and I'm rather considering the buying of a good lens which is as everybody knows fundamentaly the nerve of a good picture.

Did your buffer size go up to 25? Mine shows only 23 for some reason... And I have plenty of room on the CF. Then again, I got 34 (black) pictures before slowing down..

Must be a new trick Canon have planned all along. Instead of R&D a new camera, Canon just limited the capability of the 7D from the beginning, then extended its life by releasing its full potential a few years later.

I don't mean to be offensive, but I think your theory is highly unlikely. Even though it is well known that the technology being offered to the consumer is way behind what's already possible, trying to revive a camera that's been in the market for more than two years to make it more attractive and to sell new stock goes against the usual consumer psychology, which is to try to get the latest and newest products (5D Mark III). Going the route for a lesser model (60D or Rebel whatever) wouldn't make much sense. However, I concede that the fact that a 7D Mark II or something similar hasn't appeared yet is a bit strange.

Downloaded / upgraded / it works. I like the AUTO-ISO improvement (my wife's 600D had the 6400, I did not with the 7D...), buffer/RAW OK (I will test this tomorrow in "real combat situations"). Bottom line: useful, but it will not transform a very good camera into an incredible one. I am pretty sure that other features can be added, but why not to leave these to the Mk II? Canon Marketing people are surely aware of that. What Canon did with the 7D 2.0 firmware is called "line extension" in the pharmaceutical industry - they are using this "tactic" for years to keep the product lifecycle as long as possible, if profitable. But wait, even the "users" can benefit, more or less. Good move. P.S.: I just wonder, what can be done for my good ol' 5D Mk II... Cheers! :)

Thanks Canon for this update to one of the best camera in your line up. Although I love my 7D, I had retired it and made my Sony A77 my main camera. With this upgrade it will now come out of retirement. Again, thanks Canon.

Wow those are some great improvements. This is similar to the enhancements(Fully working AFC in Video, Better burst rates, Better Noise Reduction) that Panasonic added to the GH2 over a year after its release.

I hope this trend continues. It is great that Manufactures are still supporting their products even when a new model is just arround the corner.

I bought my 7D with firmware 1.something, paid for it and accepted it for what it is. I thought then (and even now), that it was an awesome hardware/firmware combination. Now Canon is giving me a significant upgrade . . .FOR FREE!!!! And that's supposed to make me feel CHEATED??? I don't get it.

Not really complaining.. but it does lead to legions of other DSLR models wondering why/when/if these kinds of improvements (raw buffer, auto-iso programmability, etc..) could have or will be made to their bodies (eg. 5DII, 1dIII? Heck if if they retroactively offered such for a nominal price ($100 ?) who would take them up on this?

I think this substantial firmware upgrade will be a one-off for the 7D only and I think here's the reason why. The 7D is the first in Canon's "new body" design for prosumer/semi-pro magnesium alloy clad DSLR cameras. (5DMkIII is the 2nd one) It was a major departure from the then existing xxD body design. In terms of hardware, it is still a competitive design. So Canon, I think, figured out that all the improvements it needs is firmware upgrade and instead of developing a new body, they just gave that to the existing body.

In my opinion it's not a bad idea. Save on R&D, retain the value of a very good camera, and at the same time make existing customers happy. It's like hitting 3 birds with one stone. I don't believe they'll do the same for 5DII and 1DIII. Those bodies were already superceded with the 5DIII and 1DIV (and 1DX) respectively.

So, the question is, did Canon have this plan way back when they launched the 7D originally? How long ago would they have had to start development /R&D for a 7D2 that they decided not to, and how long have they known that firmware could be published to accomplish almost the same thing?

Will the 1dX have a IdX2, or will it be firmware? Will 5dIV be about in a couple year, or a 5dIII firmware update?

Canon knew did right from the start of making the FW of the EOS-7D. Brands slow down the development of a camera in order to make everytime a new one to sell, sell and sell. P&S camera's make more progress these days. Built-in WiFi / GPS. Now I shoot with Pana FZ-100 (old one) + Eye-Fi 8Gb (auto upload to any ftp server). Great stuff.

Nice to see Canon see the benefit of updating firmware to enhance their cameras' capabilities. Too bad they didn't include other much requested features, like expanded exposure bracketing (5 or 7 images) and focus bracketing. Maybe there will be a 2.1 or 3.0 next year.

Oh Yes!! The only new feature I was hoping/praying for, was expanded auto-bracketing to 5 or 7 or more frames... sigh. I'll likely download the FWU, to stay current, but I never use Auto ISO, seldom shoot more than say, 5 or 6 high-speed/burst shots, and can't quite imagine in-camera RAW processing being useful to me in my particular workflow - I certainly don't want to trust the LCD screen on the back to tell me what the result will look like.
Fingers crossed again, that the NEXT FWU Canon releases will expand the # of Auto Bracketing frames!!

Kinda pampered my decision NOT to buy 5DmIII (yet? ;) It was too expensive anyway, yet the drooling continues.

I just upgraded to the new 7D Firmware, I'm not sure if it will give me much benefit, But Heck, it does feel like I have a new toy to play with :) panning shots watch out :)

I wouldn't call it huge, but I loaded it up anyway. For me, the buffer depth and max iso are the two main features. I don't plan to use the GPS module and I don't shoot video much. I wouldn't call this as big as a real h/w refresh, but one might speculate that they aren't prepared for a new crop body in the xD line. In fact, my (un)informed guess is that there won't be a 7D Mk anything/ever. Seems more likely that range will be the FF as the cost of those sensors heads down.

I'm a pretty happy camper with my 7D as is. For some reason, I just have passed on most of the issues people have seen.

As a 7D owner, i am looking foward to this update. I am an enthusiast photographer and my budget will not allow me to buy a new camera that is better than the 7D. Well done to Canon for making the effort to keep their customers of its top of the line crop camera happy. Full frame lovers got the 5DIII and we got the firmware update. Im gratefull, as im sure many other 7D owners are too. If im going to upgrade from the 7D in the future, it will be to FF, so for now i believe i am getting the best Canon can offer for this camera, and any other in its class. I cant wait to use the upgrades in the field.

Does anyone know if the new 7D software effects support for 1/250sec shutter sync speed with the new Canon 600EX-RT Speedlight in RF wireless mode? The Canon web site says that when using RF wireless mode on the 600EX-RT, the max shutter sync speed on pre-2012 cameras is decreased by one stop. I have read owners of 600EX-RT speedlights that say this is either a misprint or corner case, as 1/250s shutter sync works fine for them in RF sync mode.

Wondering how the resale value of the 7D will be affected.

Just curious why would you worry about the FW in a camera you are considering buying 2nd hand, when it can be easily downloaded for free any time?

Some have no problems installing the new downloads. It is easy for them.

But not all users are are able to do that without concern.

The slightest hitch in the FTP, and the camera becomes a brick, and it is imperative to bring it to service at a cost.

Others may place value on an updated version because they have no clue how to do it, or not very sure of themselves how to do it, or just plain lazy.

How on earth can firmware change buffer size that drastically? I would say it had been crippled to start with, but it doesn't make sense in the top apsc model.

Take a class on software code, you'll realize right away what can be done with firmware upgrades. Just like hardware tech, software tech moves forward.

It doesn't change buffer size at all; what it does do is process images more quickly, which allows greater burst depth. They just improved the processing algorithm.

I always believed that the bottleneck was not processing but write to to the card. And what processing are we talking about? It's about raw buffer, so it's not the actual jpg engine which improvement I could imagine. I thought raw capture was almost completely electronic. It doesn't correct any aberrations afaik, so what there is to process?

Canon said that the new firmware did a better job of memory buffer management which allowed a deeper buffer. Their terminology is off - on the Canon Web site they say they improved the 'rate', but the rate is the same - 8 fps. The burst length is what significantly improved.

Don't worry Canon will be along soon to give their users a "massive" update and everyone will dance around saying how wonderful it is and how Nikon should sit up and take note blah blah blah.

The fact is that it is Canon that deliberately CRIPPLES their products in the first place so that they can keep their users hungry. It's a VERY cynical policy. Try loading the camera with top spec in the first place; the D800 has a huge mass of features the 5DIII does not. Just in the same way even the ageing D300S has features the 7D still not, even after this so called upgrade.

Only new images can be re-dimensioned and rated. My jpeg old images were not accepted. Old raw files cannot be processed too.

BUT, you are of course aware that Canon is only doing this to renew the interest in the 7D (lagging sales) and to keep the people who've already bought one from jumping ship... and not so much as disinterested service to it's existing base of customers.

I would have wholeheartedly agreed with you, had Canon done this AFTER releasing the 7D replacement.

normally they would never do, as long as cash cow flows they'd let hang loose if the others would let them - just have a look at their "mirrorless" ... they are just not up to what they should be

O.k., seems I wasn't clear...

Canon is doing this to renew interest in a product that, while still being a good tool, is starting to lag behind the competition... or just about to. They are doing this, like everything else, to make money. They want to sell 7Ds... now they can say there is a "new" 7D with this firmware. Since they probably don't have a good 7D replacement anywhere near production... they're trying to rekindle the interest in another wise - now - bland product.

I would have had more respect for them, had they released this update 2 years ago, in the product's mid-life cycle and not as a last ditch effort to drum up sales of the 7D, probably still a whole year before they'll get anything else interesting out the door to replace it.

Of course, Canon fanboys won't see it that way... but then again, what's new under the sun... ???

Well, they could have moved a few controls around and then sold it only as the new "7Ds" so you'd have to buy a new body to get the upgrade. Somehow this approach seems preferable.

But having still Canon dslr of my own shouldn't prevent my brain to make up a critical mind. Canon is a pain in the neck, I'd never had bought a 5dII which should have had proper AF right from the beginning, now it's 2012 when they first give way to that but still leg pulling concidering the 5dIII price.

I have a Canon 7D that I use as a backup camera while shooting my weddings.
Yesterday I update the firmware to the latest version, and everything was fine.

Took some shots, went over the menu, everything looked working well.

I had an engagement session today, and I was excited to see the new features, so I decided to use it instead of my Canon 5D MK2. After 2 ( Literarily ) only 2 pictures, it stopped working giving me a blinking battery signal, so I thought I used a dead battery, changed to a fully charged one, got the same blinking empty battery, then "Err" and after few seconds NOTHING.

Tried different batteries... nothing no sign ... totally dead.

Any idea??
