Gariz leather half-case for Sony RX100

By dpreview staff on Jul 30, 2012 at 23:59 GMT

Korean accessory maker Gariz has introduced a leather half-case for the Sony RX100. Setting it apart from the other examples on the market is its metal base plate. This not only allows the attachment of the company's 'Gun Shot' strap system but also repositions the tripod mount into line with the lens's optical axis. The cases can be bought directly from the company, though it's not clear what additional shipping costs will add to the Korean price of 76,000 Won (around $67). (From DCWatch)

I bought this case and I really like it. The quality of the leather is great. I also have the wrap case to protect the lens and the screen. The half case looks pretty - I think that's it's only real purpose but the wrap case doesn't work for the camera unless you have the half case too. Considering the amount of money spent on this camera, I think the case is a good investment overall. You really need both pieces. I bought it on ebay with free shipping from Korea. Both pieces cost me about $125 CAD. A little pricey I think but again, considering the money I spent on the camera, it was worth it.

Sexy as a mutha.

The plastic bottom is the only cheap-looking part of the camera, this case brings it all together in pimptastic splendor.

Too many complaints about DPreview.
Yes you get to read details of new cameras as you always have had. This is my first stop for anything related to cameras, especially when researching a new potential purchase. The forums are useful.

But it's also great to see items like this be put on the site. Book reviews, cases and other paraphenilia that are photography related. Not sure why the handwringing and aggravation. It's fairly easy to not click on things of no interest.

I can't get it. what exactly does this case do? It does not cover the camera. A piece of brown leather on p&s camera? What's the purpose. It does not make it prettier :)

It's just like a G-string. It doesn't protect not hide so much either. It's not against bad-intentions (maybe it provokes them though) and it's always too expensive for the little materials it's made of.

What does a half case do? I like the look, and this one is pretty cool, but other than providing the underside of your camera from getting scratched, not sure I get it.

While this one looks pretty nice, I think I prefer the cases that have a top half as well. In addition to style, the half-case provides some protection and improves camera grip, helps small cameras feel a bit better in big hands...but I prefer to be able to snap the top on when putting it in a bag, etc. How practical they are varies from camera to camera -- for example, Pentax Q has its battery and card doors on the sides so a half case doesn't block either door.

Superb half case! Perfect in my hand with the Gariz wrist strap. Looks fantastic and build quality is unsurpassed. Prefer it to an additional grip. For protection I transport the camera in the excellent Waterfield Design #42 case.

Does it add much bulk to the camera? I have the Gariz OM-D version and am thinking about this case. Is it still pocketable?

Great product idea,

I like that they made the camera better holdable with the added cm and that they centered the tripod connector. The additional weight gives more stability handhold or on a Hague mini for example.

Negativ is that they did not integrate a small grip in to the design and that the HDMI-plug is blocked.

The camera should still fit easily in every pocket.

I just don't get it. What actual use do they provide? Surely they take away the main advantage of this camera which is it's pocketability.
Beautiful though they are, they are not for me.

The half case could be 1cm thick on all sides and still easily fit into anyone's pocket. The camera is SMALL.

Very stylish, but not nearly protective enough to be useful. A functional case needs to protect the camera from scuffs and scrapes when it is in a bag full of other stuff. Otherwise, it's useless except perhaps as a fashion statement.

Like to baby your gear much? Good luck getting it out from your overpadded overprotective case when you need to take a quick shot. I am sure your camera will be in mint condition for the inevitable EBay listing.

You're exactly right. I don't know anyone that owns a pocketable camera that doesn't carry a big bag of gear around with it.

It's too bad the RX100 doesn't have a metal base plate. But since this thing does, it would be nice to know how much weight it adds.

what does this case actually accomplish, other than a de-facto "I am not in it for the actual photography" statement ?

It adds a metal bottom to a plastic one. It's adds just enough to get a better grip. It doesn't turn a pocketable camera into something that it was never meant to be. The problem is, many folks want to baby their cameras and they end up never really using them. Cameras are meant to be used and most are built to take some abuse.

I'm fed up with pointless gadgets. I mean it ! When I first came on Dpreview, it was really interesting and totally photo oriented. Nowadays, there are very few news and on the two or three new topics a day, about half of it is about gadgets. Yet there are hundreds of that sort of leather or leather-like case; who cares of this one, who cares of others too ?

I'd prefer to read more reviews about flashes, filters, deflectors, printers, tripods, photo-calibrated video screens or really inovative "little" accessories like the ones produced by Blackrapid (cf: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snake_oil ) that makes our shooting reactions faster, safer and easier.

Is it too difficult to be more substantial ?

I think dpreview is trying to widen their audience appeal by including more modern applications of photography in the news posts....but maybe they're stretching themselves too thin. I come mostly for the top notch reviews and the forums. I never really came to dpreview for tech updates. A little content organization would help since right now it feels like dpreview is kind of all over the place without presenting anything substantial (besides the reviews).

Huh? ...isnt a flash a gadget, along with filters, deflectors, printers, tripods, photo-calibrated video screens? ...you want to read about photo-calibrated video screens? ...you just named all gadgets, everything buta camera. So you want to read about gadgets that you like only ...lets be real here.

Don't be so stupid ! Of course we all want first to read about new cameras ! Was it indispensable to clarify it ?
But is there a piece of news about a new camera every day ? When there isn't, it's better having news about what really help to make (better ?) photography, and a leather half-case doesn't at all. It's a pure fashion accessory.

Is it too difficult for you to differentiate the two sorts of materials ? If it is, no doubt you are in the target of the new DPR editorial line.

At $35, I think the Franiec grip to be a far better investment. I've found this sort of protective "shooting" case to be not only unnecessary, but obtrusive as well, for the ultra compact cameras. With my Oly XZ-1, I used the Franiec grip and an Op/Tech neck lanyard for carry-around shooting, and then just stuffed the whole business into a light, belt-clip pouch, for protective stowage and transport. I'll use the same system for my RX100.

In other words, you stuffed your $650 camera into a $15 pouch and turned your pocketable camera into what? The camera was designed for the pocket.

Masking tape works only with the camera you apply it on (besides lacking in style).
But at 2/3 the price of the Gariz you can solve the problem of fingerprints on the front of EVERY camera you handle (yet with style) -- http://www.patriciafield.com/browseproducts/Leather-Finger-Tip-Gloves.html
