Just Posted: Nikon D3200 preview samples gallery

By dpreview staff on Apr 24, 2012 at 23:34 GMT

We've prepared a samples gallery using the D3200 - Nikon's latest entry-level DSLR. While many of the features are familiar from the D3100, the latest model incorporates a 24MP sensor, so we thought we'd see what the pictures look like. Given the kind of user it's aimed at, we decided to see what the D3200 could do using the 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 VR kit lens, at a various of ISO settings and in different lighting conditions.

There's no Raw support for the D3200 yet, so all these images were shot with the camera's default JPEG settings (which has noise reduction and Active D-lighting on). The last nine images are JPEGs re-processed in camera, using a variety of post-capture filter options.

There are 36 images in this samples gallery. Please do not reproduce any of these images on a website or any newsletter / magazine without prior permission (see our copyright page). We make the originals available for private users to download to their own machines for personal examination or printing (in conjunction with this review), we do so in good faith, please don't abuse it.

Unless otherwise noted images taken with no particular settings at full resolution. Because our review images are now hosted on the 'galleries' section of dpreview.com, you can enjoy all of the galleries functionality when browsing these samples.

Very competitive. Definitely better than Canon's offerings at the same price.

There was no doubt about that, just based on the Nikon samples released on April 19. I'm almost afraid to look at these as I've been trying to talk myself out of buying yet another camera, but this one looks perfect.

It could be worse, the camera that you want could be insanely expensive. For the IQ, this is pretty damned cheap. Think of it like you aren't SPENDING money, you are, in fact, saving money over an NEX-7 of A77.

Very nice. My entry level DSLR the in 2009 was the D60. It definitely couldn't deliver low light images like this. I wish my skill as a photographer can move at the same speed as the technology :).

Nice IQ for an unstabilized 18-55 on a budget camera! Wonder how this works with the 35mm prime or maybe a 50 1.4.

Is the D3XXX the same level as the D40? I really haven't followed the D40 line since.

D40 - D40X - D60 - D3000 - D3100 - D3200

(Though the fact that the D40 continued for a while alongside other models rather muddies the water)

indeed, huge improvements in resolution, iso sens., autofocus/tracking, LCD, video.... it's huge leap forward.

How much bigger if any is the D3XXX vs the D4?

Are these better than the a65🚺77 images?

Possibly, as the A65 and A77 still have the SLT mirror in the way, and the Nikons use a weaker AA filter.

But there is more to a camera than just pixel-peeped image quality. In terms of overall feature set, the A65/A77 murder the D3200 (which they should, looking at the price...)
