Happy Holidays from dpreview

The entire team at dpreview would like to wish all our readers Happy Holidays, Season's Greetings, Merry Christmas or whatever you say in your part of the world. As we celebrate our 14th anniversary we're thrilled what we've achieved in 2012 and are looking forward to another exciting year in 2013, with even more new features in the pipeline, even more of the high quality content that made this site what it is today, and some exciting new additions to the team. Whatever you're doing today, enjoy yourselves and thank you for being a part of dpreview.com!

Maybe it was the delays wrought by the devastating earthquake in Japan and flooding in Thailand, maybe it was because it's a Photokina year, maybe it's just that product cycles are getting more and more stretched. But whatever the reason, the result was that 2012 was a bumper year for new products in the enthusiast photography world. I can't remember a year where we saw quite so many products that we could genuinely get excited about, and get excited about being able to tell you about. And all this despite the photographic industry continuing to struggle with the challenges of a declining market, poor economy and increasing pressure from the smart phone on the point and shoot sector.

Here at dpreview.com we've had an incredibly busy year, trying to keep up with the deluge of exciting product to cover, launching a completely new site, relaunching lens reviews and completely overhauling the forums software. And of course a lot more work under the hood and behind the scenes - work that you may never see, but that will ensure that dpreview keeps going for another 14 years, and more.

As a result of some of the initiatives launched this year (and some coming next year) we've been able to add to our editorial team for the first time since 2010, and are incredibly excited to have Shawn Barnett (until recently Senior Editor with our friends Imaging Resource) and Jeff Keller (founder of dcresource.com) joining our reviews team in the new year (more on that soon). We will continue to invest in high quality content for as long as we can afford to, and I am 100% confident the new recruits will allow our over-worked (and often under-appreciated) editorial team to make dpreview.com an even more indispensable resource for the photographer in 2013.

I was going to write a lot more but it's 10pm on Christmas Eve and I have gifts to wrap. So, until we return to normal operations on Jan 2nd (just in time to haul our collective asses to CES in Vegas) let me wish you a peaceful, happy holidays.

Again, merry Christmas from us all. Without you, none of this would be possible.
Simon

Blending the major holidays of some of the world's major religions by wishing people 'Happy Holidays' or 'Season's Greeting' is to miinimize the impotance of each holiday.
-
Here at DPReview you have more than enough space to say Merry Christmas, happy Channukah, Happy Kwanza, o any other holiday at this time of the year.

You criticize those wishing others Happy Holidays or Seasons Greetings and at the end say nothing of the sort to anyone?

Terry Pratchett talks a lot of nonsense and evidently does not know the meaning of 'holy'.

Are non-holy days unholy? And according to which of a multitude of religions? Cheers to Terry Pratchett for riling stuck-up people like "itsastickup".

The silent majority of secular people don't give a flying fig for the religious aspects of this holiday. Where do you people get off shoving this stone age death cult down our throats every year? Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays is an insincere blanket wish too many people express in the same manner they grasp 'political correctness' in my country.

Now tell me, Nikonworks: Isn't "Happy Kwanza" (or any other phrase) as blanket as "Happy Holydays" is? Improper emotionalism? I mean, tolerance is in great demand. I honestly wish you've had Happy Holydays.
Tone of thought in my home country.
---------------------------
The following I replied to Jimmy jang Boo some minutes ago: we shouldn't judge on other's approaches whatever it may concern. That kind of criticism is simply inadequate in my view. We should keep in mind that Simon's (and DPR's) intension was to send a gladsome message to us. And moreover, this great site is about photography - a spare/fulltime job we all like.

For Your information it is 'Happy Kwanzaa".

Thanks Nikonworks, but I did copy&paste from your post ... :) - anyway, a flashpoint to browse the internet, and I found this (I didn't know before): "Kwanzaa is an African-American holiday created in 1966. It begins on December 26 and lasts through January 1. The name Kwanzaa come from the language of Swahili and means first fruits of the harvest." So we all learn step by step ... 'cause no one knows it all :).

Precisely. And that is why using Happy Holidays or Seasons Greetings is of no value to the readers of different beliefs.

Stating the specific holiday is more sincere and instructive.

Merry Christmas and another successful new year, Simon et. al.!
I wish you all what you would wish for yourself - above all, good health and a spare set of steel nerves exach - so as to be able to accomplish what you set to do.
In my country people say: "This was an average year: worse than last, and better than the next one...", but I believe this can be tweaked somewhat.
Enjoy your trip to Vegas - don't spend it all in one place! ;-)

A lot of retailers feel that they will offend someone if they recognize a Christian holiday. I believe that was the point of Quest21 post. Then again, critical people will criticize no matter the subject.

Well here on Christmas Morning .... I say a very Merry Christmas to all who wih for it and a Very Happy New Year. It must have been a very tough year for so many .... NOT least great guys like Jeff Keller who has given us so much over the years . I do worry about some of the best sites closing ... because we dont provide funds enough for those who give us so much good content on the internet.

So good luck for next year Jeff ... hope you can find a true home here that suits you. I hope something of the un geeky excellence of your site can come here and enrich dpreview.

In the words of thebIrish greeting

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.
