DxO Labs announces v1.1 of its ViewPoint distortion correction software

By dpreview staff on Dec 11, 2012 at 14:00 GMT

DxO Labs has announced version 1.1 of its ViewPoint distortion correction software, promising more accurate tools and faster operation. Viewpoint is designed to correct keystone distortions (converging verticals and horizontals), and restore more natural proportions to objects towards the edge of the frame when using wide-angle lenses. It is available either as a stand-alone tool or as a plugin for Adobe PhotoShop (CS3 or newer) or Lightroom (version 3 or newer), and for both Mac and PC.

Press Release:

DxO ViewPoint v1.1 – Restoring the natural proportions and perspectives of your photos has become even easier

Special 35% discount through December 25, 2012

December 11, 2012 – DxO Labs announces the immediate availability of DxO ViewPoint v1.1, the new version of its software solution for Windows and Mac, entirely dedicated to correcting keystoning, as well as shape deformations caused by the use of wide-angle lenses. DxO ViewPoint v1.1 improves the accuracy of its perspective and cropping tools, as well as its speed, for an even better user experience.

Based on DxO Labs’ advanced geometrical corrections, DxO ViewPoint corrects the distortion of the subjects on the edges of images — known as “volume anamorphosis” — due to the use of short focal lengths (as with wide-angle lenses). DxO ViewPoint also lets users correct the most complex kinds of perspective problems, including keystoning, without having to resort to costly shift-lenses. Each of these features includes advanced fine-tuning controls to achieve the highest correction precision.

DxO ViewPoint can be used not only as a standalone application for Mac and Windows, but also as a plug-in for Adobe® Photoshop® CS3, CS4, CS5, CS6 and Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® 3 and 4.

More accurate tools

DxO ViewPoint v1.1 provides improved keystoning correction tools and more precise automatic recropping.

It is now possible to move grid lines directly in the image without having to reposition each anchor point; with this, the anchor points, as well as the slider settings, can now be directly and very precisely moved by using the keyboard.

The cropping tool now automatically detects the image’s orientation and is also more easily adjustable.

Faster for an enhanced user experience

Even easier to use, DxO ViewPoint v1.1 is now faster and offers several new features to improve workflow.

A new rotation function allows images to be correctly oriented, even when their EXIF data has been damaged.

A shortcut allows users to go from one zoom level to another, and automatically displays the Hand and Arrow tools, depending on the magnification of the image.

The application has also enhanced the recent Close and Open functions in the menus, and now alerts the user when a keystoning correction cannot be applied to the image.

Availability and price

DxO ViewPoint v1.1 for Windows and Mac is immediately available in the DxO Labs online store (www.dxo.com) and at photo resellers at a special discount price through December 25, 2012:

  • USD: $49 instead of $79
  • EUR: 49€ instead of 79€ (Suggested retail price, including VAT)
  • GBP: £49 instead of £69 (Suggested retail price, including VAT)

This upgrade is free for all owners of DxO ViewPoint v1.0.

A fully-functional trial version of DxO ViewPoint v1.1, good for one month, is available on the DxO Labs website (http://www.dxo.com/intl/photo/free_trial_version).

If we have the previous release of Viewpoint, is the update free? To install the v. 1.1 update should we 1st uninstall the previous version, or will the update overwrite the previous vers. w/out the need to uninstall? Thx!

Hmmm. So most expensive for UK purchasers.

I cannot see how to buy in the UK and pay in Euros. Is this possible? If not, does this breach single market legislation?

I just purchased and I'm a bit disappointed there is no auto setting that detects the lens/camera profile. Also the scaling for volume anamorphosis seems a bit crude - basically the same as scaling in Photoshop. I'm not seeing the benefit.

Hello ecphot,

DxO ViewPoint bases its automatic correction on the sensor size + the focal lenght in order to make correctly the volume anamorphosis correction.

(lens / camera profile are only used inside DxO Optics Pro - for distorsion, vigneting, chromatic abberation, lens softness, RAW conversion, noise removal ...)

Concerning your 2nd point, I'm not sure to understand what you mean.

Best,
Olivier

how do you tirn on the auto - setting? i do not see a change when opening an image. re: 2nd point - I was hoping for better results but it seems similar to just using scale in PS transform. maybe it works better with certain images. I shoot architecture and interiors so I was hoping it would help me with objects near the edge of frame.

Hello ecphot,

For volume anamorphosis, let's say that it is a1 clic tool (not completly auto) as you need to choose between diagonal correction or horizontal/vertical correction.
You can get more info here: http://dxo.com/us/photo/dxo_viewpoint/features/volume_anamorphosis

Then you can finetune with the sliders if needed.

Normally, you should get the result in few clicks with ViewPoint. When using Photoshop (maybe free transformation / warping tool ...) you might get a similar result but after struggling during many minutes.

Olivier

All I can say is that improvements to volume anamorphosis from DxO Optics Pro v7 were obviously cut from v8 to make this new software. This explains how they could release v8 in under a year. Since DxO ViewPoint gets a 1.1 so soon, clearly they are doing the same run and gun releases as with DOP, with no care for quality and you can expect a v1.5 by Feb and v2 by June.

Hello Raincoat,

At DxO we first focus on Image Quality before everything else. All our applications are driven by that. Then of course, there is stability, speed, ease of use ...

I can see all our customers happy to see new releases with new features. Could you please provide us any reason why we should prevent ourselve from improving as fast as possible our products ?

To the DXO people: if I have LR4 and CS6, and potentially want to use this in either program, do I need to buy two copies of your software?

Olivier from DxO Labs
By Olivier from DxO Labs (Dec 12, 2012)

Hello RPJG,

You only need to buy 1 copy

To give a more generic answer :
1 licence = the right to use on 2 different computers any of the standalone / LR plugin / PS plugin

Hello micmol2004,

Nothing is planned for now.

The main reason is that Aperture doesn't provide any lens correction (more specifically the distorsion correction)
In order to have a volume anamorphosis correction that worth it, you would need first to do the distorsion correction.
that is the main reason why DxO ViewPoint is "only" a plugin for LR and PS which are doing (partially but at least some) distorsion corrections.

As a workaround, I would suggest you to use the standalone application for now.
I know it is more painful but I don't see another way for now.

Another way (but completly different) would be Aperture --> Catapult --> DxO Optics Pro --> Catapult --> Aperture.
I mention DxO Opitcs Pro because you would be able to do both lens correction + geometric corrections in that application. From what I know the software Catapult (not a DxO software) is a way to transfer a RAW file from Aperture to DxO Optics Pro and to bring the image back.

Best,
Olivier

I have a hint for iPad owners who don't want to pay $50:
AndifTouch and AndifWarp are two much cheaper ($1 and $2) iPhone-iPad-apps. With both apps you can correct keystoning and radial distortion with a few finger touches.

Just bought a copy, should be very useful.
Noticed one oddity --
If I drag 'n drop an image from a folder in Windows Explorer, it works OK. I select the folder, it opens; then I pick the image, etc.

But when I use the File > Open command in Viewpoint 1.1, it lets me select a folder... but it won't open the folder to let me pick the image. Maybe because Viewpoint's 'Open image' dialog is looking for an image file... JPG, TIF, etc... and doesn't recognize the folder icon I am clicking on... the folder that I have to open first to then choose the image.

Mildly irritating, but not a dealbreaker.

I like this software, very quick and easy to use. I use Aperture and there is no built-in tool for key-stoning. Glad to see it being updated. I wish they would make it a plug-in for Aperture though.

Now this I can see, especially for $49. Lightroom's ease of use instead of the clunky DXO interface and as good or better geometric correction. Good idea.

Okay, now that I've had a chance to try the demo, I have to wonder what the DXO people are thinking. No reset button to revert to the original pic. Really? No real time adjustment, as in DXO full, you must move the bars and "apply." Laborious. Not nearly good enough to separate anyone from 50 bucks.

There is a rest button, its top right hand side. It looks like a small arrow.

Hello Reilly,

I'm a bit surprised about your comment so I hope that you are trying the right software :)

Let me answer :
- reset button : reset button is available in both Keystoning, horizon and crop control. Also you can use CTRL Z. (For volume anamorphosis, it looks like there is no reset button, but it shouldn't be a matter as it is a 1 clic solution so CTRL Z should be OK or even "double clic" on a slider to reset it.

- real time adjustement : there are 2 display modes. Each of them brings you the real time adjustement in a different way : If you are in a "side by side" mode (which is the only available mode in DxO Optics Pro), you will see the live correction on the right side each time that you move a handle. If you are in a mono image display (specific to DxO ViewPoint), you would need to press the "refresh button" which is shown just next to the handle that you have just dropped

I hope that the explanation is clear enough, if not please tell.

@Chekr,

thank you for your comment.

DxO ViewPoint is indeed dedicated to those corrections. As a consequence, everything is make in a way to acheive the best result in a minimum of click.

Also as the engine has been enhanced for DxOViewPoint (compared to DxO Optics Pro), there is more flexibility in the tools.

Here is a dedicated page explaining the additional features that you can find in DxO ViewPoint compared to DxO Optics Pro.

It seems a Euro version is 49 Euro, but a UK version at UKP49 is the equivalent of 61 Euro, but prices include taxes.
49 Euro is actually UKP 40

Hello Olivier
Got your reply, I was looking in the wrong place.
It would be good to try out the plugin in Lightroom, but as far as i can see it does not offer any more than the correction tools in Photoshop, so would not be inclined to buy the plugin at UKP49

Hello Mike,

Please don't hesitate to download the 1 month trial version. I'm quite sure that if you do have a wide angle lens or if you need to deel with perspective controls, you would really appreciate the ease of use to get a perfect result.

Concerning your comment about Photoshop, you might be able to do part of the correction in that application, this is true, but it would take ages doing it properly. And there are some tools that you won't find in it. For exemple, in ViewPoint, you can do more complex perspective controls (with the rectangle tool) while keeping the entire canvas (not loosing any information)

Volume anamorphosis in 1 click is also unique. (for wide angle lens)

Hope that you will give a try and have fun with it,

Best,
Olivier
