Triggertrap app adds Wi-Fi control for remote smart camera triggering

Triggertrap Mobile, the app-based camera trigger can now be used remotely if the user has two smart devices. The latest version of the app, that allows a wide range of cameras to be triggered in response to a range of events or with sophisticated time-lapse functions, features a Wi-Fi mode. In Wi-Fi mode, a 'master' iOS device can be used to remotely configure and trigger a camera that is connected to a Triggertrap mobile dongle and a second smart device (either an iOS or Android phone or tablet).

The master device can be used to trigger multiple cameras, if each is connected to a Triggertrap dongle and smart device. The app itself costs $4.99 and the dongle costs $24.99 and is available with a variety of connection cables allowing compatibility with over 280 camera models.

LONDON – Nov. 12, 2012 – Triggertrap, developer of creative camera triggering solutions for photographers of all skill levels, announced today that its popular Triggertrap Mobile for iOS devices now allows wireless functionality via Wi-fi network. Unique to Triggertrap, this new Wi-Fi triggering technology enables photographers to leverage the range and speed of a Wi-fi network to control the dynamic features of the Triggertrap Mobile app wirelessly from an iOS device. The new wireless functionality is now available as a free upgrade for existing Triggertrap Mobile users and will come standard with any new purchase.

With Triggertrap Mobile’s exclusive new Wi-Fi triggering mode, photographers can now trigger their cameras via a Wi-fi enabled “slave” device that interfaces with the camera through the Triggertrap Dongle, while controlling the camera functionality from a “master” iOS device. The “Slave” mode is included both in the iOS and Android app.

Photographers can even wirelessly connect multiple cameras to the same “master” device. For photographers wishing to use Triggertrap’s Wi-Fi triggering mode in locations where a Wi-Fi network may not be readily available, a “Personal Hotspot” created through the master device’s data network can easily be used as a substitute.

Triggertrap Mobile Functionality

What about light triggering or trap triggering? For things like Lightning photos and water drop photos?

Whilst there clearly some benefit in the remote wireless triggering, many of the options provided by the app are also provided by the Magic Lantern firmware if you can put that on your camera.

A key benefit of Magic Lantern in comparison is that options such as motion detection, facial recognition are enabled through the lens - hence they are based on what the lens sees, not the view from a mobile phone.

That said, there are going to be some situations where triggering based on what the mobile phone sees rather than what the camera sees can have other uses.

Funniest thing is you made that obvious by never even mentioned Canon in your post.

No it doesn't need to be an Android phone. The Samsung remote app is available for IOS devices in the Apple App Store.

Why? Because the dongle is not a wifi device. It translates the audio headphone signal from a smart phone/tablet to an electrical pulse that triggers the shutter. So to trigger the dongle wirelessly, you need a wireless receiver that can generate an audio signal to a headset jack. Like a smartphone or a tablet.

So, for me, it's a great feature. I can setup my omd em5 with the dongle and my iPhone and then trigger the camera, do a ten shot HDR bracket, do a time lapse, whatever...from some distance away with my iPad. Using an eyefi card in the camera I can immediately review the results ion my iPad.

Am I misunderstanding, or do I need a smartphone on both ends of the connection for this to work? Why can't the dongle just plug into a camera and be controlled over wi-fi by a single device?

I think you do need two smartphones (or a tablet and a smartphone) AND the master has to be an iPhone or an iPad. The "slave" can be an Android phone too.

What phone do you have? Even my Original Droid is running 2.3.7 and it's over 3 years old. You may be able to get a third party ROM for you device.

LG Optimus V. LG supports 2.3 on it, but they Virgin never released 2.3 for it. They did have an update right when I bought the phone that prevents me from putting a third party ROM on it.

I wish this was offered for Samsung NX20/NX210/NX1000 cameras.
The Samsung app is free but with nothing but limitations, and it has to be a samsung android phone to boot!
