I just realized tests have been performed with the 18-135 WR lens. Why pick a crappy lens to test an outstanding camera ? If you want to test the camera, pick the 50 mm f/1.4 and set to f/5.6 or. Even the 18-55 mm @ 35 mm f/5.6 is a significantly better lens. If you want to show off the camera, use the DA 70 mm f/2.4: http://www.photozone.de/pentax/618-pentax70f24?start=1. By this means you could also show one of the Pentax unique system strengths: A series of ultra high quality diminutive sized prime lenses.

All our studio tests (i.e. test charts and scenes) have been shot with the Pentax 50mm F2.8 Macro. The real-world samples have partly been shot with the 18-135 as that is one of the K-30 kit options. We have also used the 16-50 F2.8.

Thanks for taking the time to find my comment and to answer! 50 mm f/2.8 Macro is of course a great choice! May I suggest to add the information of the lens used, maybe in the subtitle of the image ? It could prove useful for analyzing detail hick ups at a later time.
Change of topic: Is there a way a dpreview reader can have a list of all posts made which got a reply? Right now I need to remember where I posted, come back to it a day later and dig out my posts to see if it got a reply. That is not tiem consuming and kills real time discussions. Could you request this feature with your web wizard programming colleagues? Thank you :-)

I actually base my decisions for purchase more on real world pictures than on the lab pictures. Thus choosing the 18-135 WR to me seems still a choice resulting in misguiding readers. Also with your choices you could demonstrate strengths of a particular system. E.g. the DA 17-70 mm is a fabulous zoom yet affordable and small. The 35 mm f/2 is diminutive but brilliant or the 35 mm f/2.4 is almost as good but at a ridiculous low price. All of these lenses will blow your choice out of the water in terms of IQ and show aspects of the Pentax System which are unique and can not be found in Canikon ( a bad superzoom instead can be found everywhere). Thus you could kill two birds with one stone and bring dpreview beyond technical aspects of photography and add more information of the Gestalt of a system. This is more subjective of course, but can be more useful too.

On the poor Video rating: Is it not so that most cameras do not offer such a long list of resolutions & frame rates? If you need a specific resolution but your camera does not have it you are very buggered. I am surprised that Pentax' effort to offer all resolution / frame rate combinations in one camera is not positively mentioned. E.g. the latest Panasonic Camera sells in two versions for PAL and NTSC frame rates. ( Really annoying if you need both ). As for the missing external microphone: If you make the effort to use external microphone, then why not use an external recorder too. It offers also significantly better signal to noise ratio than any build in microphone pre-amplifier. So that minus point to me seems academic but not real world relevant.

An external mic socket essentially allows you to capture pretty good audio with an inexpensive external mic. Yes, you can spend significantly more and get an external recorder but that is whole different level. Plus in that case, you'd probably want a camera that allows for easier transition between stills and video shooting. Just to be clear the video mode on the K-30is by no means terrible, it's just not as good as some of the competitors in terms of features.

Thanks again for taking the time to answer. I agree with you on that the features for video are different. My reasoning here is how to weight them. If one wants to shoot a casual video one may not want to use the DSLR anyways. It is heavy and shallow depth of field is trouble for this application. A pocket cam is way better suited. DSLR video is more used for production where shallow depth of field is not trouble but desired. For production an external microphone is a must and then to add an external recorder ( can be have < 99 USD ) is no hurdle and significantly lowers the noise floor. Once camera rigged for video no one will switch to stills. If have to, use two cameras. For Production however the inclusion of more resolution & frame rates is important. Summary of my point: You emphasized features which seems to be not so relevant and have discarded features which seems to be more important.

Well this is just great and reconfirms what I read in Chasseur d'Images (http://www.chassimages.com/forum/index.php/topic,159563.0.html ) I am now convinced to go with a body and an 18-135mm WR lens. This is my first foray into DSLR territory.

Pentax system = well, you really need to understand your needs / budget / expectations first.

The Pentax system is quite rounded up and will meet almost all demands. With available adapters you can cover such extremes as Tilt/Shift lenses as well. I'll bet for 99 % of photographers will never scratch the limits of this system. As for lenses: For the Pentax K mount top glass is available in all focal lengths. As with any camera system, you need to pick a top lens, if you want to have a top lens. But they are available.

@ Mescalamba: If you look for a good compromise zoom lens ( price | quality | size | handling | features ) have a look at the: DA 17-70mm f/4 AL: http://www.photozone.de/pentax/408-pentax_1770_4 This is as good as zooms go. If you want better, you need to go prime lenses in any system. It also blows the 18-135 WR out of the water :-) ( CA is its weakness, but it is easily corrected in LR )

Finally and a good review / conclusion.

So what we are saying here..... if you want to take photographs, this is a damn good camera, possibly one of the best in its class...........if you want to shoot video, its not the best video cam around. Sort of ironic way to view a DSLR, but getting with the times.........

Now Pentax just need to get their s*%t sorted in terms of product development, systems and marketing to be taken seriously. Shops here downunder getting less enthusiastic about the product and selling of their existing Pentax stuff. Good time to pounce for a bargain I guess.

Being on the top of the world (Sweden is not that far from the NORTH pole) we have seen the same tendencies here - and I too have switched brand, from Pentax (I had about 10 really nice DA, FA, and K lenses) to Nikon, as the D600 gives me what I want out of a camera - deep colors, good dynamic range, and fast tracking & focusing, something our K-5s never managed nearly as well! Sad but true!

Exactly! I thought I was on the right track, but the lack of a K-3 full-format anytime soon, made me dump the lot.

I'd love a Nikon D600, with the OM-D's 5D sensor anti-shake (it is truly brilliant), as the best Nikon prime lenses, with affordable prices, have no VR/OIS/anti-shake, like the superb 50/1.4G, or the 85/1.8G.

Really looks good. Think it slightly edges most cams in hi-iso shadow noise area like in the conclusion. The old hi-iso king canon seems to be doing the worst even compared to the E-M5. In the imaging department, K30 has a lot going but take it as a system (flash, specialty lenses, etc) i think it still has a bit of room to expand more.

I'd guess System ranking would be 1. Canon 2. Nikon 3. Pentax / 3. Sony. So if you want the biggest System, go Canon. Pentax is standing out if you love small cameras and or great ( small ) primes. Many of its limited lenses are smaller than 4/3 lenses yet have significant better IQ. So if you are looking for a system which can give you portability & smallest size, Pentax is clearly the best. If you look for biggest system period: go Canon. I have a Pentax bag full of primes and my friend has two Canon L zooms. Both systems cover the same range. My bag is significantly smaller and the quality of the primes is excellent. ( My friend is very happy with her camera system too ).

High ISO performance of the K-30 is shockingly good; better than my K-r (and that's why I bought the K-r). Getting close to time to upgrade...maybe the K-5 IIs or whatever's next after that!

And yes, the Pentax primes are amazing lenses, but the kit zooms are surprisingly good too, particularly the 55-300.

Piledon is right, that some of the kit lenses are great: the 18-55 isn't bad, the 55-300 is almost the best in its class (the Nikon AF-S 70-300 VR is even better, but also heavier), especially if you consider its low price!

Well, camera itself seems capable. RAW files are reasonable durable, tho it has quite a lot of noise in blue channel at ISO 100. Not suprising these days..

That 16-50mm f2.8 lens is obviously for something else than landscapes. :D Im not particulary sure for what its good cause output from this lens and camera combo is terribly flat and it takes a LOT of PP massage to get something reasonable from it.

I always wondered, where are those beautiful images that could be done with Pentax in film days? Cause they aint in those current Pentax dSLRs, neither in their lens..

Im sure, most will be happy with camera overall performance and high ISO capability (and DR, yup thats good). Maybe pairing with Zeiss lens would help.. well if they still made it in ZK mount, which they dont..

Dont get me wrong, it seems as great camera (most Pentax cams are very photographic friendly, more than rest). Im just sorta disappointed with latest dSLR development concentrated on high ISO/DR and mpix count.

Try the prime lenses, like limited lenses or the 35 mm f/2. They are in Zeiss class. Using a Pentax camera while shooting is surely enjoyable. If you are after ultimate quality I believe no standard zoom may please you. The Pentax one is only slightly worse than the others.

The output of a camera and lens combination is mostly the job of the photographer, period. Zeiss labeled Cosina lenses from Japan are not a panacea either. Pentax makes some fine lenses that compare well with anything on the market. You can mount some older Pentax primes and Nikkors on them which also compare well with anything available.

If you're incapable of creating compelling images with today's modern Pentax camera, you're incapable of doing so with an older film camera too, and that's a fact. Pentax's sensor is the same thing as what's in a Nikon D7000 or for that matter the D5100 and the Sony A57. Make a RAW file and you should have just about the same thing with any of them. How you process and bring it alive is the difference, not the camera or lens. That's foolishness.

I agree with you that Artistic vision is most important and post processing possibly second. If you can master this, you can create more stunning images with an iPhone than one who is without these skills but having a Canon 1ds. Granted. But say you have mastered Artistic Vision and Post Processing well enough, than different performance levels of the lenses will become readily apparent. For example the quality of the bokeh. And there are big differences in quality of lenses. It is not meaningful to shoot a picture with a narrow depth of field if the lens draws a bokeh that is so nervous that the eye keeps scanning the background rather than what you have to say. So I disagree that lens quality does not matter. I however emphatically agree with that some older lenses can be brilliant. Like I am using some very old many glass ( such as the 50 mm A f/2,8 Macro ) and there rendering quality is simply stunning. If you want most flexibility using old glass: Sony NEX plus Adapter.

Lens matters a lot.. I rather take great leans + mediocre body then otherwise.

And about RAWs from these cams. Well, they couldnt differ more. :D Trust me, D7K and A57 RAW files dont look like each other. Neither does Pentax K-30 or K-5. Sure sensor is important, but each of them have different CFA and AA. Which means results are 16 mpix but can be pretty different.

Gear matters as much as photographer. One doesnt work without another. Sure, if photographer is good, he can make really good pics even with crap gear. But for great pics, you need great equipment.. or at least some parts of it, lens for example. :D

I enthusiastically agree. Your comment started that you did not cared so much for the standard zoom. Try the 35 mm AL f/2 or the 50 mm A f.2.8 Macro. For my personal experience as well as thorough reviews, e.g. @ photozone.com, these lenses are as good as they come. So the Pentax K30 is an outstanding camera and there are outstanding Pentax lenses available to mate with it. ( Such as there are for Nikon | Canon | Sony ). But bear in mind that you can achieve outstanding quality with Pentax with a smaller package ( both physically and money wise ).

I could not agree more. I have several Pentax bodies, with the K-5 at the top of the tree. As for lenses, Pentax primes are small sharp jewels, no matter the age. I have 2 limiteds (21 and 40) the FA50, DA35 (plastic fantastic) an old M-55mm, F-28mm and some m42 screw mount Takumars. All of them provide me with superb results, especially the Takumars. This is where Pentax excel, small sharp quite fast primes, and the ability to use ANY pentax lens going back several decades (the M42's you just get the M42-K adapter). Toy Camera system someone said? I very much doubt it. There is nothing toy about the Limiteds!
As for the zooms, well they are getting very good indeed (50-135mm a case in point)
Pentax have a unique place in the market, sure they don't have a range of new lenses like CaNikon, but what they do have, are excellent and provide the buyer with choices in most focal lengths. Not long teles though, but that is not what Pentax is about - yet.

Hubertchen we mostly agree. I didn't say lenses don't count. I was saying that a good photographer trumps all of it. Any of today's modern lenses can produce good images when limitations are understoood and one works around those limitations. Mescalamba had made a broad statement about Pentax losing IQ over older film cameras, and I say that's not the camera.

Concerning RAW files looking different between cameras. That just shows somewhat of a misunderstanding on what a RAW file is. They are not images. You can't see them. They are merely a digital stored file of the red, green and blue dots the sensor stored. Some algorithms might have been applied to help prevent noise, but essentially it's just RAW storage.

At some point, your converter must demosaic that file and create an RGB image from it. What you see might or might not have camera settings applied as a starter point, so what are you talkig about, Mescalamba? How can you know or compare those RAW files from the same sensor?

Not taken enough shots with my SFX film camera to see exactly what you mention, but I think I get the idea!

Having used Pentax through much of the digital SLR age, I think there is a combination that make your Pentax sing: Tamron lenses, not least the 70-200/2.8. I also owned the 17-50, the 90, and the 10-24.

Don't know why this is so, but they seem to be able to get the best out of the K-x, the K-7, and the K-5. I was no my second K-5 when I decided enough is enough - sold my wife's first ;-)!

We had all the famed primes (DA15, DA21, FA31, DA40, FA43, FA50, FA77, DA50-135, and so on) but none beats my Nikon AF-S 50/1.4G, and the 85/1.8G, no matter if I use them on the V1, the D3200, or the D600 (the last is of course the best, but not with that wide a margin!).

I have the Tamron 80-200 f/2.8 SP. IQ is stunning, but it is very heavy and I am replacing it with 3 primes. If you want a resolution killer lens, try the Pentax A 50 mm f/2.8 Macro ( no AF ) or the DA 70 mm f/2.4. If you look for amazing bokeh / close up capability and very high sharpness, try the 35 mm f/2.

This Sony sensor continues to amaze. And in a capable camera it is a bigger plus. Canon has yet to answer the low shadow noise / recovery capability it possesses.

Thanks, this was very important information for me. With focus peaking missing this is a work around instead of manual focusing. Now the improved AF of the K30 comes to play, especially that it no longer hunts, which would be very annoying in video.

Noise of AF will be picked up with any camera build in microphone. This is why using external microphone for production is essential. Once you make this effort, adding an external recorder is actually reducing trouble: Say you record an interview. Build a single clip that holds microphone and recorder ( still very small ) and clip it to the speaker. Now you have no cables between model and camera ( you may trip over it and they would be in the movie, so really great to get rid of them). In fact battery life is so great, you can keep it running all the time. To make finding your recording clips a snap as well as synch audio and video, all you need to do is clap your hands at beginning and end.

Well done review, I agree with most of the conclusions. The K-30 is a solid DSLR with a fantastic grip and superb IQ.

A minor note, I don't know why DPR bothers with JPEG DR as with an 8-bit file DR is going to lag way behind 12 and 14-bit RAW files. Making a point of give the K-30 a Con for JPEG DR is just nitpicking.

With all the great editors like LR 4, I don't know why anyone would want to start off with an heavily compressed, 8-bit JPEG file. It's sort of silly to use a DSLR, and shoot JPEG, IMHO. Kind of like buying a Porsche with an automatic transmission.

Agreed, you get the most out of the K-30 by shooting raw, like any DSLR really. Nevertheless a large proportion of users shoot exclusively JPEG which makes JPEG performance very relevant.

@Andy - no its not.

How much DR you get in JPEG is decided by management or technology department. If you make too little, then it will be lacking in DR tests at DPreview. Too much, and teh JPEG will be accused to be liveless and bad.

And note - how much DR you get in JPEG is a setting in almost all DSLR cameras nowadays.

The DR measures is a pain though. The curves over different JPEG settings is just fine. But - could not DPReview stop mentioning it as an advantage if you can get larger dynamic range here? Its just a choice by the designers and often also by the user - and has nothing to do with the real capability of the camera. Please?

Well, Highlight and Shadow Correction work well on the K-30 and therefore are a useful feature in certain situations. I think that is worth mentioning.

Great review guys, as I think most all are. I do agree with marike6 though. Judging most anything by Jpeg output really doesn't make much sense to me. Yes, novice shooters mostly shoot Jpeg and yes, many probably don't even mess with their in-camera software settings from factory default, and yes, those probably should stick with a cheaper camera, maybe a bridge. But, the fact that you can make Jpeg edits and setting changes means you really can't compare to another camera unless you could somehow equalize those settings between two cameras.

That brings up another issue. People who look at Jpegs using a monitor to decide on a camera or lens, or for that matter, looking at RAW conversions. Few have callibrated monitors. Many have cheap TN LCD monitors of 6 bit or so. You can't tell a thing about a camera or lens by Web posted images. Nothing, and that especially holds true with 8 bit Jpegs at default settings on most novice photographer's monitor.

@Mesc - hey man - you misunderstand the DR measures, just like many more. Thats why DPR should stop making such a fuzz about them. The DPR measures of DR does not measure the camera's DR, it measures the engineers choice of mapping curve for JPEG. Thats all.

And just for the record. The S5 sensor has 13.5 stops of DR, and K-5 has 14.1 and D800 14.4. Just if you think S5 should still lead that competition.

@Lars. The JPEG mapping curve is important - yes. And its important to see what happens if you add highlight compensation etc. So - the curves are nice. and the comparison to other cameras also has its place.

What I dont like though is that those curves are treated as the camera´s DR potential. It is not! It only shows how well the engineer have chosen JPEG mapping curves.

The camera´s DR has to be measured by either looking directly at the RAW data or by using a RAW converter and see what DR you actually can get.

The sensor of the D7000 is still about the best performing of the APS-C DSLRs. The reason the K-30 is slightly behind the D7000 in RAW for DR is Pentax decided to max the DNG output at 12-bit (like the K-01) and the D7000 shoots 14-bit RAW. Having used both cameras, this is not such of a big deal in practice. And according to DxOMark the K-30 still is able to produce approximately 13 EV DR vs 14 EV for the D7000.

@fdf - DPReview is not measuring camera/sensor dynamic range. They are measuring JPEG dynamic range, which is a totally arbitrary number, chosen by the designer of the RAW to JPEG conversion.

I have a suggestion about the outfit of the reviewer.
I think maintaining a uniform for all of your videos would help create brand consistency. The pattern shirt distracts me from an otherwise excellent presentation.

A black shirt & black slacks would be enough to maintain the color scheme of the brand.
