Just Posted: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 sample images

Just posted: Sony RX1 real-world sample images - now updated with high ISO samples. We've had the chance to shoot with a near-production RX1 and have started to put together a samples gallery. These are some of the first full resolution independent samples to be taken with an RX1. We've shot a range of subjects, both in good light and in low light at high ISOs. As usual we've included a range af apertures and focus distances too.

Although the camera is considered close-enough to production standard that Sony has allowed us to shoot with it, the company has stressed it is a pre-production unit and may not be entirely representative of final image quality.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 preview samples - published 8th October 2012

There are 28 images in the samples gallery. Please do not reproduce any of these images on a website or any newsletter / magazine without prior permission (see our copyright page). We make the originals available for private users to download to their own machines for personal examination or printing (in conjunction with this review), we do so in good faith, please don't abuse it.

Unless otherwise noted images taken with no particular settings at full resolution. Because our review images are now hosted on the 'galleries' section of dpreview.com, you can enjoy all of the new galleries functionality when browsing these samples.

I expected more 'bite' from a $2800 fixed lens camera. Seems like strong NR here, if not AA filter. The lens has excellent CA performance.

Very hard to determine from OOC Jpegs at unknown settings, but looks to me more like a weaker AA filter, given the finer details coming through even with Sony's traditionally larger radius in camera USM...

If you want 'bite' you want RAW samples.

I had high hopes for this camera, but I'm kind of disappointed with these images. Looking at the original sizes they appear to be pretty soft. I guess they'll need sharpening in post (or maybe the final firmware will address it.)

Also the horrible midday lighting doesn't help at all. That could have a lot to do with not liking what I see. Hopefully there will be more calculated images in better light coming soon. But right now these don't look uniquely impressive and seem kind of ordinary to me.

What is interesting is that there appears to be no buzz on any of the Sony fora about this camera.

I could not find a single thread discussing it.

It certainly appears to have the handling and the IQ as well as a certain "look" that will attract photographers. The price is very high for what you get but still a third of the M10 and much more modern.

The M10 is vaporware so far and no one knows how its CMOS chip will perform. The RX1 is a steal for US$2800 ... you get a FF digicam plus a quality 35/2 all for less than a 35 cron asph. What's to complain about? ;-)

There was a lot of people talking about RX1, but in the wrong forum. Back then when Sony announced their new FF lineup, people started to post RX1 threads at Sony NEX forums, when they were supposed to do it at Sony Talk forum along with RX100 and general Sony posts.
