Just Posted: Sample images using the Fujifilm X100 with the WCL-X100 wide-angle conversion lens. We attached the converter to a Fuji X100 and used it to take pictures around Seattle for a real world samples gallery that showcases how the camera performs with the adapter. As always original, out-of-camera, JPEGs can be downloaded for closer examination.

Fujifilm X100 + WCL-X100 samples - posted 25 September 2012

There are 21 images in the samples gallery. Please do not reproduce any of these images on a website or any newsletter / magazine without prior permission (see our copyright page). We make the originals available for private users to download to their own machines for personal examination or printing (in conjunction with this review), we do so in good faith, please don't abuse it.

Unless otherwise noted images taken with no particular settings at full resolution. Because our review images are now hosted on the 'galleries' section of dpreview.com, you can enjoy all of the new galleries functionality when browsing these samples.

Thanks for the pics DPReview. Did you perhaps take any motion panorama pics with the converter attached? It would be nice to compare 2 motion panorama pics, one with and one without the wide adater attached, to see if one gets more vertical view, especially taken in the portrait orientation?

Well built (all metal construction), good looking, wide conversion lens can't get better than this, impressive!

It does look good, but the "wide" it provides is such a conservative difference that it seems rather pointless. If it took it to 24mm equiv, I'd consider it interesting.

I have used many wide converters, and this sure seems one of the best; wel done Fuji! Some of the images are better than dedicated APS-C SWA lenses! The distortion is not a problem, it can be cured with simple PP (at a small loss in corner resolution, almost every 'compact' and most m43 WA lenses rely on this).

Nice gallery too, some really inspired shots. Would have liked to see a few with the full sun or bright lights in the frame, because that is often a problem with WA converters (but the few with weak sun or backlighting look good!).

Too bad this converter cannot be used with the new X series 14mm f/2.8-

A good converter is an extension of one specific lens design. Generic converters don't offer decent quality.

Wow ! ... just bought my friends new X-10 ... after FujiFilm gave him a new one. I needed smaller and zoomier for my use. Having fun with all of the incredible options that that camera offers

The X100 is quite possibly the greatest camera ever made...Yes I just said that!

Good job... of avoiding rectilinear urban scenes! The only image with some straight lines (3849) shows significant pincushion on the top siding board. I am thinking that downtown would look like a 'fish bowl'.

Any news of a conversion lens for 50-60 mm?

A conversion lens to 50mm would be great -really great.

It seems to be one of those conversions lenses, like the Ricoh GRD 21mm, that does a great job and doesn't degrade sharpness much. Looks like a great addition to an excellent camera.

It's a question of how much is "much". The GRD wide converter did degrade the sharpness, but it was still a useful thing to have. Probably the same here, but I notice some distinct fuzzyness and bloom on those cat whiskers.

IMO most of those pics would be better without the WA adapter. I have the X100 for a month and is great not worring about lens, adapters, etc. Take it and go! It is an wonderful machine as it is.

I have to agree. Even when I shoot dslr, I tend to grab my 50mm 98% of the time. After a while you just get to know if so well that you don't really want to be switching. The X100 is still one of my favorite all time cameras. No one does color like Fuji.

Especially for the little change in focal length this adapter will make. I was kind of interested, and really like that the already great optical quality is preserved, but the difference is just not that great. I don't think it's worth it, personally.

I've got mine about two months ago and I use it almost exclusively and am quite happy with the images it produces.

I'm gonna add a wide converter so that I could chop the soft corners/borders off to get a 35mm equivalent crop.

I really can't tell if the bottom part is OOF or plain soft?

Be nice to see some images of shots with and without the converter to see how the image quality is affected. (Obviously the FoV would be different, but it'd still be interesting... At least for me.)

I'll second that request. It needn't be an extensive set, just a couple comparison shots, with and without, to help visualize what you're talking about.

I think it looks quite good. Stopped down it is quite sharp, including cornes (see, for example the artwork in the glass building). The flower macro also looks fine to me.

The IQ of this is excellent. Adapters don't really get better than this. If I were not impressed, it would have been about the minor change in focal length. But that is probably also why it can hold such a high quality.
