German Designer Unveils Concept for 'Instagram' Glasses

German designer Markus Gerke has unveiled a design concept for wearable glasses that could simulate the effect of Instagram filters. In one of the weirdest design concepts that we've ever seen, Gerke's 'Instaglasses' would feature a built-in 5MP camera and microcomputer, and would be able to simulate the effects of different Instagram effects filters at the push of a button, before capturing and uploading the scene to Instagram.

The concept of glasses with built in camera and computers isn't completely off-the-wall. Military pilots have been using helmet-mounted displays for some time, and both Google and Olympus are actively experimenting with consumer-oriented 'smart glasses' which could overlay a variety of different types of information directly into a wearer's eyeline.

Gerke's concept envisages the 'Instaglasses' simulating, capturing and uploading photographs taken with Instagram-type filters.

Could photo effects filters make their way into similar devices in the future? For now, Gerke is at pains to point out that his concept is merely that: a concept. A note on his website reads: 'Please note - [this is] only a design concept. I will not produce it and I don’t want to make money with it. I only want to show how it could look like. Thanks for watching'.

This reminds me of film days when someone invented a "dark bulb". All you had to do was screw it into any light socket & it would instantly turn any room into a darkroom.

Hearing aids are tailered to the unique needs of the user. This technology would make it possible to do vision correction way beyound what can be done with optics. For example I have a large hole in the center of my retina and a computer corrected image could take the missing information and spread it out to the perifery where I could see it.

This is the technology I have been waiting for.

I am a clinically blind photographer with only a 3 degrees field of vision - like looking at life through a very long lens.

Having lost all my peripheral vision through stroke induced optic nerve damage I would like to think this technology might give me back a normal wide angle FOV.

Currently I use my camera's wide angle lens to to shoot groups of people in a room that I otherwise cannot see with my eyes.

John, its called the "Wrap™ 920AR" featuring two cameras on front of the glasses, you can easily attach one of the magnet-ring iphone fisheye lenses to the front of camera on the shades... done. - most users complain that tunnel-vision is the problem with video goggles, however that would put the full amount of image in your field of vision.

* these are actually meant to mix in with a motion graphics app.. but Im sure you can play just the cam on the goggles if so inclined. :-) same resolution goggles without camera goes for much less and a hobby FPV cam would easily install for $50 and get you the same experience. ;-)

The choice is to pull up the instagram app on your google glasses, or take off the google glasses and put these on. Because you WILL be wearing your google glasses for photography in a few decades.

I'd not mind at all if, instead to be sent to EVF, image captured by my Nex 7 went wirelessly straight to a pair of glasses like that = with all shooting data, live histogram, etc, etc. - then I'd call it really COOL :) !!

Well, imagine a beach where almost everybody wears sunglasses, you meet a hot girl there, who's waring this special glasses and you do each other naked in the sun. A day later you'll find a video of you on fazebuck etc.
Of course you would take it seriously.

While the technology behind this is interesting, the release of this design concept is hardly the kind of 'news' I expect to see on a serious photography website. Please don't dumb down the content to the level of your average Facebook user!

It's pretty hilarious when sites like DPReview post concepts from designers. Like that last one with the eye-controlled camera that takes shots when you blink. It's not really newsworthy - just people exploring ideas.

Not creating this specific product doesn't mean he is not try to fish for attention. Because that's all this so called concept is. A way to get media attention to him. A designer lives by it's name, how well he name is known, a designer never makes a product.

Hmmm. I wonder if someone can provide me augmented reality glasses that, when I put them on, I can see the surroundings as they were 10, 20, 30 or more years ago? I've seen the town of Pleasanton, CA go from a sleepy little farming town (in 1970) to a large city. I actually have scanned pic from 1970 taken from the foothills looking down on the valley. (Back when my legs and back were in great condition and I could hike all day long.)

Well, the Instagramm filter stuff won't be interesting for more than 5 minutes, making it just a party gag, but there are serious applications for this "augmented reality" stuff, like integrating it with google or an combined ocr and translation program -- translating chinese into your language on the fly (well, in 10 years or so...) for example.
OTOH, our corporate overlords will then know at what we're looking at for how long, every good thing has bad side to it...
(at least Google and I guess some still unknown startups are already working at this)

Still, as a child I was reading science fiction, now i'm living it.

Considering the colossal amount of Instagram spam I and other get on things like facebook I think its safe to say the people who would buy this would find interest beyond the initial 5 minutes.

In regard to the on the fly translations one of the more interesting (or accessible I suppose) is being field tested at the Olympics this year - VoiceTra4U-M.
