Fujifilm announces F800EXR - 20x compact superzoom with Wi-Fi

Fujifilm has announced the FinePix F800EXR, a 20x raw-capable compact superzoom with built-in Wi-Fi. The F800 uses a 16MP CMOS sensor that offers the company's dynamic range or noise-optimizing EXR technology. Its stabilized lens offers a 25-500mm equivalent range at apertures of F3.5-5.3. It can also capture 1080p movies and offers P,A,S and M shooting modes. A near-twin of the still-current F770EXR, the F800 omits the older camera's GPS feature, but introduces Wi-Fi Wireless Image Transfer for Android and iOS devices via the free 'Fujifilm Photo Receiver,' app.

Valhalla, N.Y., July 25, 2012 – FUJIFILM North America Corporation today announced the premium, compact long-zoom FinePix F800EXR digital camera that features a new innovative Wireless Image Transfer function that allows users to quickly and easily upload high resolution images to their smartphone or tablet. The F800EXR continues the tradition of superior image quality that the F-Series is known for with its speed, bright lens, intuitive use and advanced features. The new F800EXR also now includes six built-in photographic filters for users to get even more creative with their photography.

The FinePix F800EXR, with Wireless Image Transfer, features a powerful 1/2” 16 MegaPixel EXR-CMOS sensor that delivers superior image quality and performance - especially in low light situations. The F800EXR also uses the bright and fast FUJINON 20x Wide-Angle long-zoom lens (25-500mm) that produces exceptional images, along with an Intelligent Digital Zoom feature that effectively doubles zoom capability and an ultra-clear 3.0” high contrast 460K resolution LCD.

New Wireless Image Transfer Function

Fujifilm’s innovative Wireless Image Transfer function allows users to connect their smartphone or tablet* to the F800EXR and upload high-quality images to social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter in seconds. 

Connecting your FinePix F800EXR to any Android™ smartphone or tablet, or the iPhone™ or iPad™ is easy - all users have to do is download the free application “FUJIFILM Photo Receiver” to their device, then follow the simple instructions to get connected. To start uploading (up to 30 images per transfer), users press the F800EXR’s on-screen connect button to join to a device, then the images will be transferred to the Android™ smartphone / tablet or iPhone™ / iPad™ for easy sharing.  

Then by downloading the free 'FUJIFILM Camera Application,' the FinePix F800EXR is also able to record the user’s current location data provided by the smartphone or tablet’s location data (latitude and longitude), and display it on the F800EXR’s LCD. Users can also send their images to their smartphone or tablet to display on a map where images were shot.  With a database of approximately 1 million landmarks worldwide, users can enjoy various functions, such as Landmark Navigator which displays the distance to a nearby landmark in the direction the camera is faced towards, and Photo Navigation which displays the distance from the photographer’s present location to the place where a tagged photo was taken.

With its built-in photographic filters, users can now get even more creative with their photography. The F800EXR has six new filters: Pop Color, Toy Camera, Miniature, High Key, Partial color and Dynamic Tone.

EXR Auto mode with Motion Detection:

Fujifilm’s advanced EXR-CMOS sensor enables the F800EXR to correct motion blur on three fronts with mechanical image stabilization, high ISO sensitivity and the new Motion Detection capability working together. In low light conditions with EXR Auto mode selected, the F-Series automatically identify if the subject is moving. If it is, the camera deploys Motion Detection and a higher ISO to ensure the subject is captured with reduced blurring. If no subject movement is identified, the EXR-CMOS sensor automatically keeps the ISO lower and uses image stabilization to reduce noise.

Users who prefer to take more control themselves can also choose from:

• EXR HR (High Resolution) priority mode – the sensor utilizes all of its 16 megapixels for the highest quality results.
• EXR DR (Dynamic Range) priority mode – takes two pictures and combines them to provide a wide dynamic range of up to 1600%. 
• EXR SN (Signal to Noise) priority mode – pixels are doubled up to increase sensitivity and give better results in low light conditions.

Sharp, Clear 20x Lens:  The FinePix F800EXR camera uses the FUJINON 20x Super Wide-Angle optical zoom lens that produces crisp high resolution results throughout the focal range, from 25mm wide-angle to 500mm telephoto, along with a Super Macro Mode that allow sharp focusing down to 5cm delivering the most brilliant detail possible. 

Impressive Speed: With auto focus speeds as fast as 0.16seconds, the F800EXR delivers outstanding high speed shooting capabilities, up to 8 frames per second (fps) at full resolution (11fps max speed at medium resolution), and full HD movie capture at 1080p (30fps) in stereo.

transfer to android wifi or bluetooth is my must have feature, in my next slr / serious camera.

I'm sure its great in this compact too, and I'd recommend this camera if only for this feature. But what I really want is my 5D to be able to do this, or more specifically for me to be able to download at top speeds into my computer just be turning on the camera somewhere else in the house. All the wifi settings must be stored.

And another thing Canon if you're reading this. I don't want just 802.11g or even n. Make it 802.11g, n and ac compatible. i.e. future proof it to 1Gb speeds. Then standardise to the entire product line, and you have a feature people will use and love, much better than the direct print button :)

Pros: RAW capture (Woohoo!), good zoom range (far more than necessary at telephoto end), 460K pixel LCD screen, smart flash, built-in HDR (though I wish it incorporated three exposures, rather than two), 1/2000 maximum shutter speed, full-HD video capture and stereo sound, acceptable weight and size.

Cons: Sensor size is still too small, LCD screen is not fully articulated, maximum aperture is still too slow (see the new Lumix bridge camera), autofocus is still too slow (.16 seconds), flash range is insufficient.

But from a glass-is-half-full perspective, the manufacturers are (slowly) getting closer to what a lightweight, advanced enthusiast travel camera should be! Maybe another 3-4 years and they'll have the formula right. I remain ever-hopeful.

Here is what I want in a camera: good battery life, good image quality, low noise, takes pictures, full manual modes & slowly bigger & bigger sensors, SCREW GPS, WIFI, TOUCH SCREEN & all that CRAP!

They KEEP sacrificing what a camera is SUPPOSED TO DO for stuff that ALMOST NO ONE USES!

I just want a camera that WORKS as a CAMERA, takes good images, delivers good flexibility & does what I tell it to, IS THAT TO DIFFICULT?! Do I have to start my own company to TEACH them how to DESIGN a camera?

And I say this as a person who has had 9 DSLR's, 10-20 film cameras & 5-8 compact cameras & been for several years photographing.

I keep wanting to buy one of these EXR large zoom cameras from fuji since the F70EXR because on paper they always look so good. but after seeing their image quality I always had to say, no, thank you. maybe this time it will be different. my super zoom compact is getting a bit older already so time to replace it.

The image quailty from my F550exr is stunning from a small sensor. It's already a useful mix of spec', but this new F880exr seems to be an astonishing mix of useful features, which link in to the smartphones we use. Effectively turns your iphone, or android device into a highly spec'ed camera. Very clever forward thinking by Fuji, which I expect will be followed by other manufacturers.

I wouldn't get one myself, but the 1/2" sensor is definitely an improvement over the standard 1/2.3" sensor typically found on these superzooms. They are useful cameras in bright light. Idea for the stealth beach pervert.

Most people think it's a copy cover camera. I don't find a camera with 20x zoom on a 1/2 inch sensor with PASM modes in the market(Fuji has one). Also most people don't know how good is the EXR sensor on these fujis. Now no GPS? I agree that's a bit of a step backward. With WiFi everywhere, building a camera to upload pics to social sites is cool too.

I concur. If Fuji, instead of putting gps/wifi/whatever wireless silliness in that top hump, made the hump like 2cm higher and then put in a decent little built in evf in that location, and charged just a bit more, people would be on that thing like hotcakes! I am still waiting for a manufacturer to do this, sigh! The last company to make a little compact with a built-in evf was Nikon - P60. I am strangely tempted to acquire one, despite the abundance of complaints about lens errors, oh what to do, what to do heheh...

Finally a superzoom announcement by Fuji! The 8 models they introduced in January were far too few to saturate the market.

Now I'll patiently wait for a Fuji F810 EXR with both GPS and WiFi, and the upcoming Fuji F805 EXR with WiFi and no RAW. Hope there will be some room left for a Fuji F815 with improved WiFi capabilities within the next couple weeks though...

I would too. It'd mean that if GPS comes back, I have a reasonable chance of writing an app that displays the GPS coordinates on the screen. To me GPS is nearly worthless if I can't see the coordinates until I offload the pictures.

Boring....why are camera companies always so complacent? They don't innovate themselves; they just copy when another company comes out with something, and usually that something isn't particularly innovative or well implemented anyway.

There's already too many scene modes thrown up all over the market, so then they starting hurling filters everywhere. Suddenly multi-exposure combinations to reduce noise and increase DR became popular. Then GPS became a must in several models and now Wi-fi will be snaking around all the model refreshes.

Not that these are bad things, but none of them are real innovations that make the actual camera better. A smartphone can already do all these; the compacts are slowly catching up with smartphones- when will a company make a feature that makes the compact worth the pocket space again?

They're afraid of losing market shares if they don't offer what the rival companies offer. These companies aren't primarily in the business of advancing technology; they're in the business of making money, first and foremost.
But it's not always the case that companies copy each other. Quite often they arrive at the same idea at roughly the same time, because their market analysis has reached the same conclusions about what the consumers want/need.

I don't think same analysis times is applicable here since Samsung has used wifi in their compacts for a couple years now I think. But that's a good point.

pureview 808 from nokia. now that is innovation. we can shoot the dead horse OS again and again, but we must respect the balls they had for putting the biggest sensor on mobile cam so far and the zoom using resolutuion, now thats smart.

I agree that most of these things are useless gimmicks, to be expected with cameras becoming electronic toys. However, multiple exposures to increase dynamic range has the potential to address a real problem, especially with tiny sensors.

Well, I've recently bought the F770EXR and an Eye-Fi card, so I have both the WiFi and the GPS functionalities for my camera.

The setup works very well with my Motorola XT910 (RAZR Droid). I've even posted on Flickr with the Android phone using this combo.

Don't know if people that buy this new camera will be able to add the GPS funtionality at a later time (most probably not).

The fuji forum has the biggest bunch of liars in it on this site. There's one guy who's already claiming the Samsung gives a "better experience" compared to the EOS-M, which hasn't even hit stores.

You pretty much have to take everything there with a grain of salt because most of those fanboys are busy lying about the cams, concealing problems, then jumping on the people that reveal the massive problems, then there are Samsung shills and marketing people playing with the forum.

With WIFI, the few people that have them are complaining a bit. It's not optimized yet. Since their RAW files are still huge, they need to use jpeg, but Samsung's jpeg engine is garbage. If you shoot on low light, these cams aren't for you, either.

The smartphone downloads from the Camera or the camera directly uploads to the internet without storing on the smartphone (BTW: why do you want to store an image first on the smartphone that if you want to share it on the internet ????)

If you actually went on the Samsung forum instead of just spewing lies yourself, you would see that the problems of the cameras are discussed time and time again.

So people conceal the cameras problems yet they complain enough for you to know about them? Sounds right. Btw, I rather like the JPEGs- colors/exposure usually great- except at above ISO 3200 when the NR smears too much. RAW sizes are an issue that have been discussed to death already (including a firmware for the NX20 that cuts the write times in half), along with other issues.

Before you start accusing Samsung users of fanboy-ism, check your own comments supporting Fuji like it's in a cult war against Samsung.
