Firmware updates from Nikon and Sigma: D4, SD1 and SD1 Merrill updated

Nikon has updated the firmware of its D4 professional SLR to version 1.02, allowing more-vivid display of images shot in the Adobe RGB colour space, improving the stability of FTP upload connections and fixing various other minor issues. Meanwhile Sigma has released firmware updates for its SD1 and SD1 Merrill SLRs (versions 1.07 and 1.02 respectively), both of which promise to improve startup times, allow a dedicated flash to be used in manual mode with mirror lockup, and fix various bugs. Why don't give it the real name.... is it a Sony update or does Nikon and Sigma work together on the Foveon sensor ?

If I read Claudio NCs ironic post correctly the point is, that the two firmware updates concerns two very different cameras - thus making it difficult find a reason to post the news in the very same article. Well, english not my first language, so what do I know...

The wording has been changed - apologies for the earlier ambiguity. Nikon and Sigma are not collaborating (although I'd be interested to see the results if they did...)

Well it's about time Sigma issued an update to bring the 15 MP Foveon sensor up to the advertised 46 MP! ;-) And for Nikon: By Foveon-means they should be more humble and revamp their advertisements for the D4 down to a mere M43- or a 4 resp. 5.3 MP FF cam. // End of logic chain (it IS Friday at last).

Sure, if you take a black and white image the Nikon has 16 MP. If you take a green image you might have 8 MP, a red image 4 MP, and a blue image 4 MP.

I don't prefer one over the other, but a Foveon sensor with lower MP will resolve more detail than a Bayer sensor with the same MP, especially on colored edges.

No, I don't think Sigma should call it 46 MP as a pixel is a unique location in the final image, having red, green, and blue values tied to it, but it definitely will resolve higher than a 15 MP Bayer sensor when colors are involved. My 4.x MP Sigma put up similar resolution numbers as my 10 MP Bayer sensors.

It is well established that the SD1 produces an image comparable to a 24 to 30 MP camera depending on the colors in the image. It is still a young technology compared to the refined bayer sensor technology. I would love to see Nikon license the foveon technology from Sigma produce a Nikon foveon camera as Nikon has superb engineering know how. Sigma is a tiny company, so expect a slower development cycle. I think Sigma is in it for the long haul---hopefully.
