Corel releases Service Pack 2 for PaintShop Pro X4

Corel has announced Service Pack 2 for PaintShop Pro X4, the company's photo editing solution. With this update Corel has added bug fixes, Raw file support for 18 additional cameras and improved support for PSD files.

Corel PaintShop Pro X4 users can download the Service Pack from Corel's support site.

The update includes the following enhancements, bug fixes and support for new cameras:

Improved display results when switching workspace color

Corel never did do raw support for Canon S100 in Paintshop "Pro" X4. Nearly a year later they came out with X5 which (presumably) does support it. So beware, if you buy X5 you may find yourself in similar circumstances if you buy a camera after the fact.

CR2s from the Canon T4i are pink in Paint Shop Pro X4. When the software be updated to support the Canon T4i .cr2 images?

The .CR2s from my Canon S100 are purple, even with SP 2. In fact I am having a lot of troubles in other programs, too.

Still no Macintosh version, Corel? With PhotoShop and Illustrator prices going skyhigh and no viable real competition, why not get back into the market? The world is waiting for a Macintosh Photoshop competitor in the midprice range and Illustrator-like software can be added to the package for additional profit. Adobe has cornered the market and has also shown that their ridiculous security wraps make it increasingly unpleasant to work with them for any price. Only the top of the market needs to pay the exorbitant prices and mediocre support from Adobe. What in the world is holding you folks back? Come on in, Corel, the water's fine!

Not sure I need the update. X4 runs very smooth on my W7-64 and was pleased, as the PSP3 crashed alot. I have always loved PSP to compliment my Lightroom, having used PSP for years in my past ]. It seems they both make a nice pair for solving every problem on earth. What Lightroom doesn't have PSP4 does. Lightroom gives me a few more options in the yellow range of color, which I am happy to have, using Canon cameras. But I love the tools in PSP.

Hector, I don't have the optimizer problem, but I use Save As and choose my jpeg compression from there under Options. [1 for prints, and 4 for emai/onlinel photos]

The installer popped up after last use of x4, no problems afaik, Windows 7 64 here.

I installed PSP X3 on Windows 7n64-bit, but only with a little help from the helpdesk. I had to create a separate user and log in as administrator.Even at that point it was not realy plug and play.

Why didn't I realize PaintShop Pro is just for Windows! Long time Windows user switching to Mac and didn't even stop to think about this. Really prefer PSP to the Adobe products. Before I jump off bridge, I guess one solution might be to run Wimdows on new MacBook? Even purchased Thunderbolt 27" display :(

Try Parallels. It lets you run Windows in a ... ahem, window. Can't comment on performance though. You should try it before buying.

I have come across a few ex-Windows users switching back after trying Mac for awhile. Personally I am happy with Windows. I have used Adobe products for 20 years but now I am thinking about trying something else.

Mike, Parallels seems to be my best solution. I've used PSP, Irfanview, and Microsoft Research Collage. Altho Picasa does Now have a product for Mac I've read it isn't as satisfacory as the Windows version. Currently Picasa is what I use for organizing photo uploads by date, quick resize for email, uploading to Smugmug. Perhaps there's some truth to the saying about old dogs and new tricks? I'm still using my old XP Pro workstation built by my husband in 2004! Thanks for confirming Parallels.

As a long-time cross-platform (Mac/Win) user for business needs, I've had great results with VMWare's Fusion running Windows on the Mac. Indeed, during the Vista interregnum, rolling back to WinXP on the Mac using Fusion was faster and much more stable than Vista on a native platform -- which may be a bit of a left-handed compliment. Currently comparing Win7/64 under Fusion on my '07 MBP vs. Win7/32 on native WinTel desktop.

Good to see news items about alternatives to Adobe software. Does PaintShop Pro X4 run on Linux? I guess not. Corel AfterShot Pro does run on Linux (formerly Bibble Pro). It might be a good alternative to Lightroom.

I use AfterShot Pro on linux, and it's great, I shoot RAW and do most of my post processing In After Shot, with any finishing touches in GIMP. Quick, efficient, and very cost effective.

I switched to Paintshop Pro from Photoshop (CS5) when X4 was announced and have never regretted it. I need imaging software on more than 2 machines simultaneously and the Adobe prices are insane even if you can live with just 2 machines supported per license (yes, I know about the license transfer mechanism but it's a nuisance and is limited to a small number of uses). Paintshop does everything Photoshop does at a tiny fraction the price and IMO the user interface is far better. All my plugins work perfectly and I much prefer the Scripts to Actions, in part because you can edit them as plain text. I do agree with the complaint they are slow providing RAW support but I tend to use the camera manufacturer converters anyway. Also, for faster file handling we could use a 64 bit version. It has always puzzled me why Paintshop isn't more popular given its capabilities, pricing and the way Corel has gotten serious about support but guess there's no accounting for brand loyalty :~

Agree. I waited for support of 16-bit image editing in plugins before upgrading. It now needs 64-bit app version to play in the big leagues.

I've flirted with Photoshop and Photoshop elements, mostly just because everyone else did, and wasted big bucks in the process. I've had Paintshop Pro since v3 and although some releases have been worse than others, particularly when Corel first took over from JASC, the experience has generally been good. X2, X3 and X4 have all been superb and i supect X5 is fine too. I find I have everything I want from Photoshop available in PSP (including using add-ons like Exposure) and in general it is easier to use as well.

They are slow, just adding the cameras from the year ago (NEX-3???). And still no E-M5 or D3200.

Except if you try using the Export>JPEG Optimiser, which causes the programme to freeze, at least on a 32 bit Win 7 quad core machine. So far, Corel's support suggestions have failed to produce a successful result. This is the first time I've had this problem, having use PSP8 onwards over the years.

Works great, no problems. This is the best imaging software you can buy, and we've tried them all. Topaz Labs plug-ins work great with it also.
