Grizzly bear tests limits of rented lens insurance cover

In 1988 my Leica R3-MOT was smashed and partially eaten by Sasquatch, while I was attending a nature call during my photo camping trip around the Smoky Mountains.
I didn't have the chance to record it on film since that was the only camera I had with me.
Nobody believed my story. Not then, not now.

Am I the only one thinking he was pretty lucky to have a camera & tripod to leave there as a distraction for the bear while he got away?

Just a thought... I'd ponder if Nikon would pay Andrew Kane a decent fee for the rights to those photos (and story)?

it came out of hibernation to see Nikon's latest and greatest, took a sniff and a taste, and thought, bloody hell it looks and tastes same as that old D3s, angrily stomped the heck out of it, and took off to hibernate another 4 more years in anticipation for the next D5 lol :-)

Years ago I read this story in a gun magazine. A guy was out on a bear hunt and asked the guide what the difference between a black bear and a grizzly bear is and the guide responds:

If a bear chases you, you climb up in a tree and the bear climbs up after you, it's a black bear.

If you climb up in a tree and the bear pulls the tree up with the roots, it's a grizzly bear.

where are the photos of it stomping and chewing on the camera?

Looks like a small bear to me, about 4' tall. What did you run for?
" Two guys are chased by a grizzly bear. First one says" What are we going to do?" the second says "I am going to out run you and hope the bear is happy chewing on you."

He was only trying to see how many megabites the D4 took!!

the bear clearly prefers Nikon, however this does clearly demonstrate that the D4's ergonomics are flawed; clearly it needs an additional battery grip for those of us with unusually large paws (I mean fingers)....

I think the best comment (dig) over on the original FM thread was this one by xaradaisy:

"The D4 survived because it locked up and played dead."

should tripod companies open a new segment called "Bear resistant"?

Maybe the bear was trying to make a self-portrait (kind of like what a monkey did a few months ago) but found (and realized!) that the lens mounted on the D4 was not the right one for portraiture.

The news item's wording seems to indicate some kind of promotional intent in favour of the lens rental service. The news itself could have been explained with a less promotional flavour. Yet the story was surely worth to be on DPR - also as a good change to the usual - and it caused some entertaining commentary.

A survaval tip: If you are cornered in the woods by a grizzly, just throw him some Nikon. Finally something it is good for ;)

I think the bear was looking into the camera after he had heard it used a BAYER pattern sensor.

I read: "the replacement BEAR is already on the way to Kane"

The grizzly is clearly smiling.

Interesting real world test of the Nikon lens Kane used to document the mauling. The dpreview editors should consider including a young grizzly bear in the lens target setup they use for testing new glass. :-P

Evidence why it's best to go hiking in wild country accompanied by a slow person (bait) encumbered by heavy camera equipment or a lot of bear belly.

Don't worry! You can go there with another camera, from another maker. This bear just become addicted to Nikon, I'm sure!
