Fujifilm issues firmware for X-Pro1 and XF lenses to silence chatter: Digital Photography Review

I tried the X-pro 1 a couple of days ago in a local retailer with its original X-mount 35mm. To put it short, I loved the camera, but I noticed a lot of chromatic aberration in the photos I took under the florescent light. Is this normal or the camera has possibly been defected? Has anybody else experienced such a thing on this body?

Have the X-Pro 1, w/35,18,60 and just got the Leica M adapter. Also updated software for use with Leica M adapter.
Does anyone know how to actually focus sing an M Leica lens on the X-Pro 1?
Fuji could not hel as they did NOT have an adapter or lens in stock to test.
It seems, unless I am wrong, that the only way to focus is to somewhat guess using the digital viewfineder. Any help would be appreciated. I have at present a 28mm f2.8 elmarit for it.

I don't have the camera but I have tried it in a shooting session. All you have to do is to put the viewfinder on electronic mode and then push the adjustment dial for the evf to give you a 100% magnification of your focus area. With the 1:1 zoom, focusing becomes much more than a guesswork. I could ger very sharp photos with very accurate focus. The only issue I see with this method is the fall in evf refresh rate in very low light conditions, but I could not test this...

I bought the x10 in january, shot with it extensively in panama...also with my trusty G12. When I got back home I returned it. Though it't a cute little thing that looks pretty cool and feels pretty good, it simply ain't worth that kind of money. The G12 I thought at the time, was worth $500. With the x10, one try at their manual focus fiasco was enough for me to not want to be stuck with it.
I know that Fuji can do alot better than that... and I will wait. But I won't hold my breath. I still don't understand why someone can't just go ahead and make a great camera! I'm in the photo business and I make great photos. If all these companies are in the camera business, why can't they just make a great one?

this is a very special camera with great potential. unfortunately fujifilm released its firmware only for pc computers... thats umbelievable! when some makers will respect all their customers???

I have a mac and was able to update my XP1 without incident. Much improved, by the way.

Just use FireFox on a Mac and it works fine.
Safari seems to garble the files.

Even so, the body firmware wouldn't initially read but the lens did and updated.
I tried the body afterwards and it worked?

Have had the XPro for a few days and just received the 35 mm (I had the 18 mm already).

So far, the images are quite impressive, although no way to test the raw option until LR gets the converter for the XPro raw files. (I have tried the Silkypix raw converter and find it a joke to use).

The jpegs are very impressive; images that in my view closely approach (but are not equal to) the quality of my 5D2. The main shortcomings appear to be a relatively slow focus in many instances.

The high iso images (3200 and above) are actually superior to the 5D2. I have shot all the way to 25600 in a very dark forest setting and captured quite useful images. I'll try and report more once I've played with the 35 mm some more.

I've also got my x-pro1 a few days ago, and I'm amazed by the photos it produces. None of the problems mentioned below were an issue for me. Wow day 2 with the x pro1 and I am thrilled. Hauled my Nikon D3 with the 70 -200 2.8 and the xpro 1 with the 18mm. Sharp clear images everyone under not ideal shooting conditions.

So, I am confused by this board of nay sayers. Unless your actually using the xpro 1 everyday and in pro like conditions then I think that you really have nothing to complain about. The camera has been everything I had hoped for and much more.

I Bought x pro1 today, 35mm & 18mm lens. Took it to a classical music photo shoot I had with the Mozart festival. I had the firm ware update. I also had my D3 as well, hust in case, but not needed as The xpro 1 was amazing. Crisp images, no chatter, high iso's no noise. First time out without any time to get to know the camera it was amazing!!

It is painfully obvious that Fuji should not be in the digital camera business. Just about everything they bring to market of late has to be recalled for its guts to be replaced. Major firmware updates are dime a dozen with Fuji as well.

Fuji, please.... stick with making great Fujinon optics and great film stock for both photography and motion picture cameras. But please, bail out of the camera biz, leave it to the big boys.

Please, can we keep our comments in perspective. I bought the pro1 and its a fantastic piece of kit, I really don't mind that it has a few bugs in it which they iron out over time. The apeture issue was just a little annoying, but nevertheless minor. Look how amazing it is that we can get these fixes so quickly.

Francis Carver, until you shoot with the camera, please don't judge it. I've been using it for a month, and it's IQ is remarkable. Firmware updates have been prompt and useful. There's room in the world for Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Leica etc.

The updates went great on my X-Pro1. After reading about 1000 forum comments over the last month I have concluded that most of the naysayers out there are arm-chair-generals who have never even held the camera or owned one, (or they're just whiners). AF is a little slow compared to my D700 but only in some situations. I'm sure it will get faster with future updates however in the meantime I have gotten several action shots of my kids after only a days practice. I'm lovin' the IQ on this thing and the lightweight rangefinder handling is so refreshing.

Leave aside whether or not X-pro1 is the ideal machine for photographing children, is as fast as an 5DMKII and other amenities that the final test of Dpreview I hope will reveal,

Sorry, but the focusing is dreadful on this camera. I shoot about 100 images a day and I have had focus problems in both AF modes. When it focuses, it is probably the best digital camera ever made, and I am not exaggerating that point. But in a crucial moment, it is scary and not fully reliable. With subsequent firmware updates it will eclipse the Sony NEX series. Until then, potential guarantees nothing.

Clearly the X-Pro1 may not be a winner on this forum even not after this firmware update. Nevertheless, I love to see that the IQ is on par with a D700 or 5D. That it surpasses the M9 in IQ including glass; some finally admit it. I love to see conclusions here and there that the AF-behavior isn't so different from f.i. the 5D MKii. Most mid-class DSLR's btw let you assume it's possible to focus under very low light conditions until the results are being revealed. I love to see how the X-Pro1 allows to pass the magic iso 6400-limit still delivering very exploitable results. Where are the DSLR's that can do the same without colorized noise? The other famous EVIL's? The far overpriced M9's at this point? The truth is this isn't just a camera for the P&S-crowd, gadget freaks or spec-geeks but for true photographers. Most of all, I love to see that Fujifilm is updating firmwares even more then after a year, re: X100. Something again not too obvious for some of the far superior competitors!

I love Fuji. 645, 68, 69 MF, I owned and shot them all. I tried the X100 and talked a friend into buying one. I am exhilarated about the X-Pro1, might even consider getting one when the bug fixes are done (X-Pro2, more likely :)
What bugs the hell out of me though is how – for no real reason apart from maybe not being able to afford it – people keep slagging off the Leica M9 here on this forum. Yes, the Fuji is based on rangefinder cameras, but not necessarily on the Leica M. Fuji had their own RF cameras, albeit in medium format. Why comparing apples and oranges again?
I am very satisfied with M9 IQ thank you, shooting raw DNG full time and developing in Lightroom gives me stunning results. ISO zillion thousand I don't use, wouldn't go above 1600 with ANY camera. I shoot in light and sleep in darkness.
Having shot with the x100, I must say: lovely and fun as it is, nothing surpasses the feel and immediacy of a mechanical rangefinder camera. What with close focus, parallax and all.

The X-Pro1 could take on the D4, D800 and 5D MkIII. It is the M3 of our generation. But that DAMNED AF PROBLEM just drags it down. I put a Kipon M adaptor on my X-Pro1 and shot with a 1974 Tele-Elmarit f2.8 90mm lens. Probably the best and sharpest images that I have ever shot. http://johnsmith-johnsimages.blogspot.ca/2012/04/anastasia-models-tyson-and-anastasia.html . At 6,400 ISO it is like shooting at 400. http://johnsmith-johnsimages.blogspot.ca/ . But the focusing NEEDS fixing!

I'm actually thinking about getting X-Pro1 too. X100 is one hell of a camera but X-Pro1 gives you flexibility of different focal lengths if you need it (I do need something a bit longer - for portraits)

I bought the X100 a few weeks ago so I let a year go by for the price to become affordable - I got mine ex display from John lewis for £620. Also many of the bugs had been ironed out. The X100 is a wonderful camera that encourages my creativity & gives me a lot of pleasure & satisfaction. I'll enjoy and learn from my X100 for at least two years (if not far more) & only then will consider if I need and want an X-Pro 1, by which time bugs will have gone and the price will have come down considerably. My main 'problem' is the daily hunt for fascinating subjects to photograph. I'm so lucky, as a non pro, to be wealthy enough to afford £600 pounds for a camera, but it's one of the best pieces of technology I've ever owned & I use it daily because it's easy for it to be always with me. Looking forward to seeing the pictures everyone takes with the X-Pro 1.

I download the firmware. I saved to the SD card. I follow the Fuji update firmware procedure. When i get to upgrade, the camera says new firmware file cannot be found. Anyone knows how to handle?

there are separate firmware for lenses and the body. you trying to update lens with body firmware or vice versa.

This is what the X100 should have been, and it should still be $1300.

Even still, it is FAR from what it should be at any price. It is a good camera, but it is not a great one. Yet, it COULD be a great one!

I updated the firmwares, no real problem. The only complaint is that the files have no version numbers and apparently each lens need its own update file, but that are all named the same! So when I uploaded the 18mm file and next the 35mm file and 60mm file, my Mac renamed the two last ones with -1 and -2 added to the end. So, thinking that all files are the same I tried to update the 35mm with the first file and got the error message that it it was not the right one. Not really good thinking, Fuji... Apparently the camera firmware only accepts one name for the body firmware file and one name for the lens file.

So Great! However, it still have huge bug on my xpro 1!!!! It is so surprise to have automatically turned Green in whole over exposure area on my pictures which used Fujifilm Original Silkypix converted from RAW file format, Green usually appeared in Sky and Light. so annoying! Anyone have similar situations or any solution to me?

This whole thing was blown way out of proportion. The 'lens chatter' didn't cause cancer. It didn't affect the camera's operation. It didn't degrade the images it was capable of producing. 'Oh how terrible, the camera makes a tiny noise, call the police!' The internet is a funny place, where a bunch of people (the majority of whom have probably never actually held the camera in question) whine and moan and call the camera/company a failure over what was essentially a cosmetic issue... and now are whining and moaning when they fixed it. No camera is perfect, and I'd rather deal with a company trying new paradigms and experimenting - and accepting the inevitable stumbles - over companies that produce very polished models that are are so polished because they're just a warmed over rehash of their last 57 models.

I totally agree with you Junyo, I never understand this condamning approach on something that probably has never beed tested personally: I am more than happy to own an X-pro1 and its IQ is simply amazing, this camera has some quirks as all the cameras on this planet and the people at Fuji is working on what the users suggest, I like this approach and this camera

I noticed the chatter but it did not bother me much. In any case the camera turns on so fast that there is no point having it hanging by your side wasting battery with the EVF turned on.

Well, if you've just spent 3000 on a x pro and you're sat there imagining that your a great photographer with his Leica, silently snapping all the most intimate moments, capturing the split second in time, the very soul of your subject. The last thing one wants, destroying the day dream, is a chattering auto focus lens trying to compensate for light levels in Av mode/auto iso, in order to pipe live view wysiwyg to your rear LCD chimper screen. Is it?

The chatter annoyed the bejesus out of me. It was predictable to anyone that many users would find it annoying so it was just incompetent to send the camera to market with such an obvious fault IMV.

At this price point, demanding a higher standard is totally acceptable IMO. Fuji's X products are good, but they leave many, including myself, wondering if it was money well spent. If fewer customers were so ready to compromise expectations, we might see better values in the marketplace.

I really wish a manufacturer would stop milking the masses with "almost perfect" products and actually give us what we want. Thanks to all the marketing MBAs out there, we don't have many real options, do we.

I can't argue with that, doctorbza, but it looks like Fujifilm has to implement new quality control measures before launching their products. It's because their cameras are so good and expensive that most people react angrily to these flaws. The people at Fujifilm do certainly act in good faith and work hard to fix the issues, but these might be avoided if a more careful QC were implemented. Plus it would be good for their reputation.

I disagree Fuji as with most manufactures take their time in releasing their products many testing hours spent. I too have tested the x pro1 and feel that the chatter was not a problem. Glad their addressing it. But not once did it slow me down.

They are not "potentially very good" they simply ARE very good. What I don't understand are posters (who probably haven't even used the cameras) delcare that "the people at fuji make fools of themselves" by striving to make a very good camera even better. No, they are only potentially very good. They are good, but not very good, or great. They COULD be very good, if they could improve the user experience, and eliminate the random, half-assed quicks in their X products. The foundation is there, but the interface and performance kill the greatness of these cameras for anyone that can justify the purchase at these price points.

Dotyman: I guess deciding if a given piece of equipment is good or merely potentially good is a matter of opinion. For me the bottom line is IQ. I have been a Nikon shooter since the late sixties when I was in college and working at Ritz to get my equipment at a discount. I like nikons and often use Canon glass with 16mm Arris. But have never seen images as sharp, with as much dynamic range and sweet bokeh as with the X-Pro and the 35mm lens. And for me that is worth the 3 grand. The quirks for me are minor at most. Some are not even quirks, they are design decisions, ie the lens clacking. It was "fixed" today but at the cost of noise in EVF. I understand that for you the quirks aren't worth the trouble. But I think Fuji as a company which is pushing the envelop as is Nikon with D800. Believe it or not it's not always about making money. The engineers who create this stuff have a different agenda. They are neither half-assed or greedy. If you don't like the camera don't buy it.

@ Manuel, dotyman - i've had mine X100 for almost a year - not a single problem, was always wondering what all these comments on various forums are all about. Could it be that these commenters either don't own these cameras or simply don't know how to use them? if a camera has contrast detection auto focus obviously I won't try to find focus on white wall. Menus - don't know what to do in menus, I go there only once, to set camera up and all I need to take pictures is on camera directly - aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation. Sure, if they implemented tetris in the menus, I'd spend more time there.

and as for performance and ergonomics? - well having direct access without turning camera on to everything related to capturing of a photo is a HUUUGEEE advantage. Performance? - the same, direct access to everything makes me much faster, and IQ is brilliant.

FYI - the chattering issue was a design decision by Fuji during EVF view, and a poor one at that. Aperture adjustments constantly were made to keep the EVF image (roughly) approximate to the exposure. After the firmware the chatter is gone, but in its place you get gain (noise) on the LCD/EVF image.This gain is higher (introducing more noise) the smaller the aperture you set the lens too, so it does appear to be using the configured aperture setting in combo with gain to get the simulated exposure.

For me, this is a really good improvement. Won't miss that annoying chatter.

An aside - I really was concerned about the aperture blades dying over time with that many adjustments. Victim of 3 sticky aperture blades x100s I was willing to back in to the deep end.

No regrets thus far.

I understand why people try to rationalize a buggy product: They don't want to go through a troublesome return process for a product they already paid a hefty sum; and they may actually like the product inspite of the bugs.

What I don't understand is how the producer couldn't find such bugs during years of development and testing while they can be detected by simple users within a couple months of usage.

Chattering - servo-loop rookie mistake. Engineers usually use a algorithm called a PID loop to avoid overly abrupt movement and overshooting. I'd say it rates a rant...

People can't wait to beta test cameras for the manufacturers these days. Then are quick to complain...then new firmware updates come out. Geeze. I am a fuji lover too and been waiting for this. Owned the S1, S2, and currently still using the S3. I don't understand why they can't fix the stuff before they send it out. In this race to get it out there, they know they have those who are willing to beta test for them. People buy into the latest and greatest things so the companies can get some free beta tests while gaining market share. I am going to wait on this until the dust settles. About the time an X-pro 2 comes out they should have all the fixes on this and the price will drop.

Don't hold your breath on a fix though. The game is not to perfect a product, but to change the category and reset expectations.

ON USING LEICA M LENSES WITH THE XP1

I've been shooting with the XP1 for a month. I'm a Leica M shooter, accustomed to film and manual focus, who has no plans on getting an M9p anytime soon (I have used one, but it's too pricey at 9K for me; and I do own, use, and appreciate my Canon MKII 5D). I ordered an M adaptor from eBay and have been shooting with Leica glass on the Fuji for a week, mostly a 35mm F2 Summicron. This 2K lens on this 1.7K body produces images that are nothing short of fantastic on the Fuji. Outdoors, focus is not an issue when the lens is wide open: to infinity and beyond. Also, *manual focus is easy and clear*. If you have good eyesight and experience with a manual, you'll have no problems. Not a camera for everyone, but *for what it is and does*, it's dirt cheap and a joy to use.

Possibly a wonderful camera, and perhaps even better with Leica M lenses, but not until the raw extraction aint by Silkycrap.

Also it's more than kinda of arrogant to quote lenses pricing as if that automatically means higher quality and it doesn't (says the former Noctilux owner).

I have been using the Fuji 35mm f:1.4 lens, and it is just about the sharpest lens I have ever seen, even at full open. I see no reason to use adaptors and big 135 lenses on this body, as the quality is not getting any better. No autofocus either, but better manual focus (without any focus aids), that migh tbe true.

SilkyPix works, but is clunky as as hell. Waiting for LR4.0 to include Fuji RAW.

'Big' 135 lenses for rangefinder cameras are much smaller than the 35 1,4 in general unless you get the very newest, very fastest lenses. Keep in mind, too, that for similar focal length, you need a 50mm, which is a massive lens on any system, but still, my 50 1,4 for the Canon P is quite a bit smaller than Fujifilm's 35 1,4. In fact, I'm surprised at how large the lenses are overall. Yes, they are fast, but they are huge. My Canon 35 f/2 for Canon and Leica probably houses less than half the volume of the Fujifilm lens.

I'm sure it isn't technically as nice as the Fuji film lens is, but the argument here isn't technical shooting, it's size. Typically, rangefinder lenses are tiny until you get to 75-85 and on.

SLR 135 lenses are huge. But still, not that much larger than the fuji lenses, sometimes even smaller (if you get older lenses from manual focus systems). 135 isn't the problem, it's autofocus, retrofocus, and other stuff.

@ Petka - when I saw yesterday tweet from LR about new release candidate I was so excited, they mentioned new cameras, clicked the link and sh!t - still no X-Pro1 there. Not sure what's going on, but I believe that implementation of NEX7 also took ages, but camera wasn't on the market due to floods. I hope they'll sort it out before this summer :)

@ By HowaboutRAW, if I'm arrogant because I mention the price of a lens, bear in mind that you needn't be so snide in your reply. If you judge a new camera by whether it's supported by this or that piece of software (that, soon enough, it will be supported by) you might as well never try anything new. As to my arrogance in quoting a lens price, I was doing so for comparison to what it would cost to buy an 8K Leica body to use the same lens -- a lens I've owned for 50 years and a body I won't spend that kind of money on. The price was only to give a perspective on full Leica kit v. Fuji w/ Leica lens kit.

I have one, and and X100, and Fuji is not damned for issuing updates (duh), it's for selling products at a premium price that have such fundamental flaws. It's a clear indication of the game the company is playing rather than fulfilling the promise made in all the marketing hype. Lower the prices though, and I think you'll find all the compromises are much more easily accepted.

For the kind of money Fuji charges for their cameras, I expect better quality and performance.

I think they also replaced metal parts with plastic in the M6(which then kept breaking), and have had several problems with the meter in the M7.

When I try to drag and drop the firmware from my desktop into my card's icon I get this response:
"the item fpupdate.dat could not be moved because "untitled" cannot be modified"
The card has been formatted so I don't understand the issue. I'm operating with a Mac but I've heard that others haven't had any problems.
I go back to the card in the camera, shoot and there find images again so the card is functional and yet again, after formatting, no transfer of firmware.
I have tried two different cards.

Any help would be appreciated.

The item is probably locked. Click on the file, then Command "I". At the bottom right of the window that opens, there's a padlock. Click on that. You have to confirm with your password.

I had a similar problem updating the 35mm lens after doing the 18mm. My message was "update could not be found turn off camera." I tried multiple times with multiple cards and downloads to no avail. Called Fuji and was told I was not the only one experiencing this and they would e-mail me the update for the 35 which they did. And bingo it worked perfectly. Just give them a call.

I think to expect perfection from any first generation design camera is to live your life with rose colored glasses. When I first saw the specs of the X-Pro 1, my jaw hit the floor. Then experience helped me come to my senses when I told myself, "Wait for a year until they get all the nasty little bugs out before you consider plunking the money down." I'm willing to bet all the major issues will be ironed out in the second generation of this camera. That said, if you compare what's wrong with this camera to what's right with it, the problems become a matter of quibbling.

Except that the problems are fundamental in nature, and that the "second generation" will be an entirely new design that will also have "nasty little bugs." My X100 issues still have not been resolved by firmware updates, and I'm sure Fuji has no intention of perfecting the camera before the next generation is released.

We're all a bunch of foolish consumers willing to "homer" to any promise anyway, right?

I'm an x100 owner and had higher hopes for the xPro1. I'd hoped Fuji had listened and learned. Obviously not.
Why are there bugs at all? Heads need to roll at Fuji

As you're an x100 owner, I wouldn't think you'd be surprised.

Fuji releases the x100, filled with bugs, and sells twice the number the projected. Why would that experience stop them from releasing another camera with buggy firmware?

I mean, if you don't want a buggy camera - why do you have the x100? If you like your x100 in spite of the bugs, then I think you understand why Fuji released the XPro in its current state.

Because when you make a complicated, innovative product, you can spend an extra two years making absolutely sure you've made no mistakes, or you can ship when you're reasonably sure it's good enough. In the second case, some bugs may slip through. In the first case, though, your product will come to market too late and behind the competition. Plus, if you get unlucky, the bugs may be terrible, but more likely, they're small and easily fixed in a firmware update.

Instead I think people will be praised for putting out a great selling camera and developing an entirely new system. Buggy software or not, it's a success.

Why did Apple put out out a phone that required you to hold it in a certain way for acceptable reception? Why did Canon put out a camera with light leaks? Why is there such a think as "firmware updates?" Why is does my Lightroom and Photoshop need to search for "updates?" Why did BMW, Nissan, Toyota, etc. have product recalls? Frankly, we should feel LUCKY that Fuji issued a firmware update at all. They could have easily just said, "That's the product - as is - either keep it or return it. It is what it is."

If one already owns a X100 then you should know how Fuji ticks. I think it's great that they keep improving the products. The latest x100 updates were great improvements to the camera's performance and I wish there were more manufacturers out there listening to their customers.

There is no excuse, especially at this price point, to release a product with such SIMPLE, brainless flaws. Again, ESPECIALLY at the X-Pro's price point. If the marketing game is the priority, don't ask people to pay for a higher standard and still play the game.

The autofocus is only slow in comparison to some cameras. But, it's fine in absolute terms. It's not the camera for you if you want to shoot sports. But, it's fine for landscape and portrait work - at least for me.

no doubt it is a decent camera, though not the best choice...even at its price, for landscape work(full frame options are better, even older models). Street shooters will be flustered with the lack of quickness in attaining focus but I think it is good camera for that nonetheless. but again, better options exist. The Nex 7 for one(with the right lens).

for landscape work you can use any camera
street shooting is great on the xpro-1, its probably the best street shooter I have used
Ultimately the handling is great but the sensor has to be seen to be believed. The xpro-1 is a classic in the making

Your right there really is nothing wrong with the AF but people need to take the time to understand it and have realistic expectations.

As for landscape, this is a great camera! I can actually go into the back country with a camera that isn't burdensome in weight. My previous 5D and L glass was way too heavy for my application but I wasn't willing to give up IQ. The IQ of the Pro is easily equal IMO so I am more than a happy camper.

People say the XPro1 is really comparable to X100 autofocus. I have a X100...god it's damn slow.....I focus much quicker with a manual focus camera because it's direct and precise. I don't need to clic 3-4 times before the X100 effectivly look on what I want to focus.
For a high end camera...I expected much more from Fuji with its XPro1. I thought this camera could be a great High Iso partner to complimente my other bodies like my M3...but what to do with such good Isos when it just won't focus?

Just installed. This is a huge step in the right direction. It's not perfect, but the camera already behaves more predictably and deliberately. Now give me a 35mm equiv lens; not in a year. lol

What "focus issues" - The camera is, for me, plenty fast enough and can focus - it's not perfect but I've also owned Canon 10D, 20D, 5D, Nikon D700's and while the Nikon was leap years ahead of the Canon models even the D700 missed focus now and then. If you think the X-Pro1 has focus issues then you may not be happy with it if you do purchase it.

Yes, the D700 misses, once a while, the problem with the XPro1 is that it's too slow. I'm not talking about sports, just kids playing outside is too much for it.

Most unfortunate, I wanted to love it so much, everything else is perfect, at least to me. But that kills it. Glad I got it refunded...

I guess it depends on your definition of "slow" - I've shot lots of moving people with the camera and never had that many issues. I guess if you're used to D700 speeds (I certainly am and, as I said, I have no issues with the X-Pro1) but can't get the X-Pro1 to work for you the way you like it then it's a good thing to return it.

I own the Xpro1 and think that the AF should be improved. It's not that I can't get the shot, it's that it's not as good as other mirrorless cameras at lower price points, and in some ways not as good as even the X100. It's accurate, but slow and doesn't do so well in low light where other cameras perform fine.

I have used one. At Hunt's Camera (plug alert: If you live in New England, you should go there. They're great.).

I loved everything about the camera, but in just ten minutes of playing around, the AF was a noticeable downgrade even from my old GF1. I have no idea what you are talking about when you say that you have had no problems. I found the AF to be unacceptable at the price.

I think that it will be fixable with software, which I await. Until then, though, I can't see through to paying over $2k for a camera that falls on its face in demanding situations.

Ya.. I just think AF speed and saying AF is "good" or "slow" or "great" or "unacceptable/just fine" is subjective. Don't spend your money then - that's cool - just wait for the next iteration of the camera.. mind you... at that point you may compare it to something else.. and again claim it's "unacceptable" or "good" etc. :)

I have one, and it is relatively slow.

Contrast detect AF is no match for phase detect AF. My 5D MKII is MUCH faster. Can't use the XP1, whereas the 5DII works great for shooting kids (that move [i.e. that are alive]).

Previously, when manually focusing Fuji lenses, the frame lines were stuck at infinite focus in the OFV. If you have a Leica, then I'm sure you're familiar with RFs and parallax.

It doesn't work for adapters, as the camera can't detect the RF coupling. There are some rumors about a Fuji adapter that will offer some kind of coupling for M lenses, but it's probably all wishful thinking.
