Camera Awesome update sees SmugMug snuggle up to Instagram

By dpreview staff on Mar 27, 2012 at 19:52 GMT

SmugMug has updated its popular Camera Awesome iOS app, including the option to share images via Instagram's photo sharing service. The move comes a week after the popular Hipstamatic processing app added the same capability. So, while the Camera Awesome update includes a series of feature tweaks and the option to buy all add-on filters for $9.99 (or the balance, if you've already paid for some), the bigger news is that Instagram clearly has photo sharing ambitions far beyond its own apps.

Press Statement

We’re too excited not to share the most recent awesome news from SmugMug. Camera Awesome is not only still killing it in the App Store (4 million downloads, #1 photo app in 55 countries) but today announces some new features and improvements that give our rabid fans more of what they want plus, letting you know about a new integration with Instagram.

Now people can “Awesomize” their photos in the Camera Awesome app, then instantly share them on Instagram with one simple tap. Additionally, SmugMug has added the following features/improvements to Camera Awesome today:

  • Better bundling: $9.99 for all effects, forever and ever (thatsa lotta combinations!). If you've already bought a few effects, it'll do the right thing and bill you the difference.
  • Getting started guide: In-app help shows you how to post, edit and share.
  • Pinch to zoom: Easier, intuitive zoom. The way Apple intended.
  • White Balance lock: Stick to one white balance in tricky light.
  • Smoother timer: Drag to set the self-timer. No more fat fingers.

For editing pics like you could with pretty much any software out there, I think "awesomized" sounds way over the top, "a-little-less-crappier" may be more to the point.

You know you're completely out of the trends and current jargon, when the topic of this news makes absolutely no sense to you??! :D

I never saw sharpening as filter in any cam-app - why?

For free (even with default filters) it's a great app functionally on par with similar paid apps like ProCamera and Camera+. I really wonder why would anyone pay for mentioned apps now. But it has same problem as most all-in-one Camera app replacements like this - slow startup (so you miss the moment), slow application of filters and lack of hardware HDR.

Generally speaking, I like the App. But, until it can send the picture in a text message directly from the interface, without having to save it to the camera roll and going there, it is not going to replace the camera app built in to the iPhone. And, since it can't replace it, effectively, I am not going to use it.

Is that functionality locked out by Apple? If not, please add it.

As a person that doesn't own an iphone or ipad, I'm a little unaware about this instimatic bit.

Can someone explain why the 18 bajillion existing photo sharing websites aren't already sufficient?

here you can awesomize your pics !!! ahah

I'd think the obvious convenience of its use, and that many of those people didn't share photos before they got the iproducts, makes more sense for them.

Instagram will soon come to android as well.

Well, it's not a photo sharing website. Indeed, to really use the web you'd have to use a 3rd party service (and even then you can't post). It's a really just a social network based around photographs. To an extent, so is flickr and 500px. If you're asking why another one is needed, well, why is Nikon needed if Canon exists? Or why have Panasonic when you can get m43 from Olympus? Choices. Different things for different folks.

I hate Flickr and stopped using it. 500px isn't really for me, but I have fun with friends on IG. I also use a Nikon and Panasonic lest any defenders show up :P.

It's essentially the same answer as to why your favorite brand of TV, car, or beer is necessary when there are 18 bajillion other brands.
