Fujifilm adds further functions with X100 firmware v1.20: Digital Photography Review

No one updated to FW 1.30? I just have this camera "on borrow" from a friend (3 weeks) It needs some brain pain in getting mastered within 24 hrs! ;-) Needing some mental adjustment when coming from a classic dSLR.

Interesting to read Ken Rockwell's review where he recommends to have DR on auto and ISO on auto and how the flash works well with this to give perfect fill in flash.
He is (as usual) a bit overenthusiastic about the camera and loves the panorama mode more than I do. I have tried it indoors on manual focus with it stopped down and not that impressed. Probably best for outdoors.

One thing I have never liked on the X-100 is when shooting in continuous drive modes (5fps or 3 fps) the images are saved as a group with a different naming convention. Completely unnecessary and makes playback awkward and a mess of my computer workflow. Another instance of Fuji being TOO clever.

Can anyone verify whether this update has improved the "smarts" of the Multi-AF focusing?

When I had this camera, i found that the Multi-AF focusing would often lock on odd parts of the scene in the foreground or background (example: Giving the camera to a waitress to take a photo of the table, camera locks focus on back wall instead of faces at the table).

I know the x100 doesn't have AF face detection, but the Multi-AF seemed "dumber" than other implementations I've used.

Anyone know if this has been improved in this update? Thanks!

@jbckhoo .... i will say this i probably shot a few 100 shots just last night alone indoors low light and heavy light giving it some pretty crazy AF tests and to me at least it feels like there is a fraction of improvement. not enough for me to feel like night and day, but i do know what you are talking about with the crazy camera locks. i feel like i am throwing away less photos in my work flow due to "out of focus subjects". but this also could be attributed to us getting better with the x100 and its little quirks!

i have literally been obsessed with my x100 as of lately. i cant believe i am now just seeing this update!! (edit) after playing with the new update for a few hours i am very impressed. iso access, ND filter access, and focus zoom have made this update everything I've complained about for the past few months! the more and more i get comfortable with my x100 it makes me just get faster and working with my camera more seamless.

I think it is great that Fuji continue to develop the X100, it was a brilliant but flawed camera for me when I bought it a few months ago, but firmware 1.20 by improving the focusing to near DSLR speeds and adding the toggle ND filter assignable to the RAW button has made it perfect for me.
I upgraded to Lightroom 4 also today. The combination of improved image quality in LR4 plus the improved camera functionality made today a very good day.

As I said below I find Also I do find the way the controller wheel rotates to the left to increase ISO value (and other values in some menus - and to fine tune aperture with the Toggle Control) counterintuitive. I think Fuji have tried to follow the way the manual top dials turned which is to the left as well. Still confuses me. Which way do you turn the volume knob on a stereo? Right to increase and left to decrease.

Final thoughts. Wonderful camera now even better BUT I think Fuji needs to focus on making things simple as well as clever. And to do more testing before release to avoid the costly issues they have had so far (sticky apertures on X-100 and orbs on X-10 and X-S1.

Looking forward to the x-Pro-1. Especially if they release a 25-100 stabalised zoom (and a 70-300 zoom) or similar.

Been playing more with the toggle control. In Playback mode push it in to zoom to the max to the center of the image (you can scroll around the image with the main control wheel). Press to fully zoom out if even partially zoomed in. Toggle to the right to bring up exif info and again. Keep going until back where you started. Toggle to right reverses sequence beginning with a center cross hair which I though would be the focus point but is only the center of the image (pointless really).. Handy if you prefer not to have this info on screen normally.

Hy! I'd like to asking, if i want to update my Fujifilm x100 to 1.20 firmware (actualy I have 1.11) can i update all of the latest firmware on it since 1.11 (1.12, 1.13), or I just do the update and enjoy?
Only I am afraid, lest something shifted.

Electro123, all the changes made in previous firmware updates for the X100 are also rolled into the new update. So, you can update directly to 1.20 without having to update previous updates.

It seems to me that AF is not only much faster but can focus closer than it ever could for me before. When *not* in macro mode it is easily focusing closer than 2 feet now. And once it has auto focused less than 2 feet it seems to be able to focus as close a 1 foot in almost an "auto macro" mode? Anyone else noticed this? But once you get a red box you have back out to around 2 feet or more again and start over.

One of the most glaring errors (in my opinion) is still not corrected. The depth-of-field scale seems to be calculated based on a 35mm lens, not what you actual get with the 23mm lens. CF does not change the DOF and it is much larger than what the scale on the camera is showing.

This exactly the experience which I also made with the AF.
If you focus close (about 2ft), it can focus even closer (about 1ft). Lose focus and you go back where you started :)

I thought that I only imagined this, but you confirm my impressions.

What has happened to the live histogram in the viewfinder in 1.20? With OVF power save mode off, and Histogram selected in the custom display mode...no histogram. Doesn't appear in either OVF or EVF. Have I missed a setting? At least they got rid of the empty frame

I still see the histograms Derby. Did you press DISP/BACK to make sure the CUSTOM view is showing? This setting seems to be stored independently for OVF, EVF and LCD.

Does anybody have the previous X100 firmware (version 1.12/1.13) that they could share? Autofocusing in MF mode using the AE-L/AF-L button isn't working nearly as good as before while focusing at distances of closer than 1.5 ft/45 cm. Parallax error, which was never a really big deal before when shooting in MF mode, is now a HUGE issue.

Definitely snappier AF. Assignable RAW button. Yay!
Pushing the (under-utilised) top controller toggle in zooms to the focus point when in AF-S. Clever. Works similarly in MF too. Now if the aperture can be fully controlled by the toggle (I find the aperture ring lugs awkward). Would have been nice to see Auto ISO in the Fn button menu but at least it is much easier to access now. Agree that you should be able to override auto ISO by selecting a higher ISO if you want. Why not a dedicated ISO ring a la Canon G12 (for X-101)?
How about an assignable toggle controller (same as RAW an Fn button)?
Very good upgrade Fuji - even if I did have to wait a year!
Next job make the menus so that it is not 3 steps to get to the set-up menu. Maybe assign AE button to the Shooting Menu and AF to Setup.

A lot of negative fuzz about Fujifilm on this forum... but which other major camera manufacturer did ever release a firmware update after one year, improving overall performance, better AF, even adding new functionality? I can't remember. This 1.2 release is truly a camera revamp. It learns me that Fujifilm listens to its users and is not seeing us just as stupid 'consumers' like some others do. Once again it confirms my step towards the X-Pro1 (still awaiting it) wasn't a wrong decission. What isn't right now will be fixed. Be sure.

HeyItsJoe...Fuji announced they are developing a modified sensor for the X-10 and X-S1 planned for release in late May. I imagine they will retro-fit this to existing units if requested by the customer.

For a moment I thought the firmware-upgrade also dramatically improved the long writing time.. then I realized I had to switch it back to capturing RAW :/

This long time in which it is impossible to change camera settings, for me, is the only real issue with this camera. If only settings could be changed during the writing time.
Otherwise, this firmware upgrade is really great. I love to have easy access to the ND-filter, and the dramatic improvement in autofocus time is awesome!

I believe it is the speed of the SD card you use in your X100 which speeds up or slow down the X100. After upgrading my card to an Sandisk Extreme Pro (45 MB/sec) the X100 is noticeably faster.

Another problem is reading the card with an iPad for example (with Camera Connection Kit) and putting it back into the X100.

The ipad is putting some information on the card which slows down the start up or writing of files to the X100. If you "write lock" the card before reading it with the iPad or reformatting after uploading the pictures, it is fast again. Weird.

When I had a slow write problem, I saved the pictures and formatted the card. Which solved the problem. From other posts, it seem that other OS write crap to the card. I usually use the USB cable at home and only use the card reader If I'm away from home. The delay took ten seconds and delayed the start up time

Updated this morning (10 min),
the RAW button thing is cool, now we have 2 customizable buttons.
The camera seems to focus a lot closer. But it might just be an impression, I haven't done any particular test yet.

Anyway, that's cool from FUJI to continue to add stuff to the camera. If they continue like that it will become okay good !!

As for the sticky blades, so far so good. 1000 shots since 21/02/12 and no issue. my camera has a serial beginnig with 21xx

Just installed the latest firmware and taken some test shots (daylight and inside). My two biggest issues with the X100 seem way better now at least in daylight (will check lower light later).

My findings are as below:

On focusing:

The X100 seems to be more consistent at focussing on darker less contrasty objects now like a black or blue jacket (has always been hit and miss before) say 9 times out of 10 it would miss and was very frustrating. This has been greatly improved in daylight (still to test in lower light - thats tonights job)

On close focussing:

My X100 had around a minimum focus distance of about 30cm before, which was only slightly better improved on in using macro mode. Initial findings are this distance has been really improved on and using macro mode is now maybe 10cm or thereabouts in daylight (still to test in lower light - thats tonights job)

So far so good, well done to Fuji for improving on the X100 focusing.

exactly the same problem here, simply, what they've done is moved Auto ISO in the MENUS to ISO settings but you can't get Auto ISO as part of ISO settings via FN/RAW button

Okay - very simple.

1) Add a an AUTO option on the ISO list so it's accessible from the FN/RAW button or even the menu section. You don't need to EDIT the auto ISO settings - that can stay in tools. You just need to be able to select it.

2) Make AUTO ISO part of the changing Custom Settings. Even if I assign Custom 1 as 200 ISO and Custom 2 as 3200 ISO, the AUTO setting overrides everything and screws things up. Why have ISO selectable, when AUTO overrides it?

I think I'll be selling the Fuji. Amazing camera, but PLEASE consult with some people who understand how to USE the cameras. This is a beautiful camera crippled by its firmware.

No offense, but you sound like a baby just whining for the sake of whining. You make it seem like your turning on auto iso after every shot or something. Are you at a rave trying to take shots in between a strobe light strobing? Are your lighting conditions changing every second? Set it to auto iso and leave it. That's what auto iso is for. If your manually setting your iso speed, then use your dedicated iso button, where's the problem? I think it's more of a 'you' problem than a camera problem as it sounds like you don't have a firm grasp on what settings you should be using under various conditions and how to adjust.

I have to agree here. Auto ISO is something that I use rarely, and when I do it's very much set it and forget about it for the rest of the session. For the most part I like to choose the ISO the camera is using, and for this purpose the ability to select it using the Fn button is handy.

@samhain I don't think there's any point to call somebody a whining baby. Your preferred method of taking pictures doesn't necessarily mean that it works for everyone. Me personally I use Auto ISO during the day and manual ISO in the evening when I shoot on full manual. Having Auto ISO in the same ISO settings via FN/RAW button increases usability of the camera - one doesn't need to go to menus when light conditions change or one is shooting both indoors and outdoors.

To me it just seems that your comment is just out of place here and you're trying to convince others how to use their cameras instead of trying to understand that not everybody uses their camera the same way as you do.

Is the slow startup problem also fixed? I stopped using my X100 because startup time could take several minutes! And in between that time it looked like it was dead/broken and was not going to startup at all. Oke when I re-formated the memory card the problem was gone, but I like to work with large sdcards for a reason so was thinking of the OM-D EM-5.

I really like the panorama mode for the X100, but the internal stitching isn't that good, especially with white highlights (snow). Is that fixed? (does anyone know how the OM-D panorama mode works? The NEX-7 panorama mode seemed to work better than the X100's.

I agree with Donar, I have a sandisk extreme 8go and it's ok when just formated but half full or so, it can begin to slow down and it's a problem when you cannot empty your card every day.
ex : I don't have my computer in holiday.
If they could do something on this that would be nice...

I always have it on and haven't experience any big battery drain.

Several MINUTES to start up? Several would be at least three minutes. So if you turn the camera on and count carefully from "1" to "180", the camera might not be on at that point?

Hi I have SanDisk 45MB/s card and the only time I have problems with slow start up is when I remove it from my laptop (mac) and insert back to camera, quick fix is to format card in the camera - not on your computer. This fixes slow start up time.

I use High speed SD card 95mb/s and there is basically no waiting time at all. Turning it on takes about 0,5 sek. or less with no quick start. And there is no waiting time using raw at all.

I've never found them to be "broken". Its gotten faster in the last couple of firmware iterations and easier to grab focus in low light, but if you're coming from a DSLR or recent m43 camera you'll probably find it slow. But its very workable. Many people used to DSLR auto focus are disappointed with it - most other folks aren't. But it was never really bad once you understood parallax (when using the OVF) and how to find a vertical element to focus on in low light (which it still needs, from what I can tell - it still hunts if there's only a horizontal line in the AF box in low light).

Thanks for your answer Ray. I'm going to take the plunge and get one either this month or next. I am used to a DSLR but I also use a Samsung EX1 compact and that hunts for focus. I imagine it will be at least as fast as that.

Fuji will repair any X100 with SAB with a newly designed lens assembly. and as far as I know every new X100 (serial 2xxxx) now comes with the new lens assembly.

Nope, it was as simple as falling off a slippery log backwards. Followed the instructions. Formatted the card. Copied the file onto the root of the card. Inserted card. Turned on the camera whilst holding DISP/BACK. Followed prompts. Done. Easy.

Yes, from the Fuji x100 firmware update 1.2 page, I downloaded the fupdate.dat file, copied it to a formatted SD card, held down the disp/back button while turning on the camera, got the Firmware Upgrade screen, showing v. 1.13 was installed. On pushing OK per instructions, I got "latest firmware already installed"...
Please advise.

Photographic and technical excellence aside, I love the classic look of this camera ... a real beauty! The X-pro 1 is a much more versatile camera but, in my opinion, it lacks a little in the "looks department", e.g. why did Fuji opt for such a cheesy looking hand grip?

I also discovered that when changing a setting with a button (not in the menu) and then confirming with the shutter button, the annoying focusing does not happen, just the confirmation of the value!

sono contentissimo di questa digicam ,la sua tenuta sulle alte luci e il bilanciamento del bianco ottimale in tutte le situazioni la rende la migliore in assoluto.Mi chiedo come mai ne' la nikon e nemmeno la canon di cui praticamente ho avuto circa 10 reflex diverse non possano gestire il white balance e tutto il resto come fa questa x 100 .
Grazie fuji spero presto che questa azienda produca una reflex con tutto quello che di buono nella gestione dei file è riuscita a fare con la x 100.

I have been tussling with the decision on whether to get one of these for a few weeks now. The main issue for me was the negative reviews of the AF, plus the SAB issue.
Let's know folks. Is the focus now acceptable in both AF and manual mode?

I think the AF has been getting better and better with each firmware update. Manual mode is OK when using the AE-L/AF-L button, but the focus area box is relatively big. Personally I think "don't bother" with the focusing ring, even with the latest update. The image just doesn't snap in/out of focus that well with the EVF or screen, and the ring response is laggy.

I was worried about this too. I just broke down & bought it earlier this week. The AF is absolutely not an issue. Your talking a fraction of a second slower than a dslr, and faster than older dslr's.
Another thing I was worried about was the delay between shots. Well I didn't know that once you take the shot it instantly shows you the picture for a second in the viewfinder. Before you get a good look(1sec) at the photo, it ready to shoot. I got a 95 mb/s card and it's not even an issue. I knew it was a good cam, but questioned all the people saying its the best digi camera. But after a couple days use, I can see why. I always shoot raw but the jpegs are great and the film simulation filters (velvia, b&w, b&w+extra contrast, etc) are f'n awesome! And if you havent seen it in person, the cam is small enough to fit in your pants pocket! bonus- everyone who sees just stares & drools.
Forget the negative comments you read online & just get it. One look thru the OVF an you'll be in love!

I think I know what you mean by 'not the ideal way to handle auto ISO, but I think that although it would have been nice to have ISO AUTO ON/OFF along with ISO values that are assigned to Fn Button, it does not make much sense. I think so, because it is not EITHER an ISO value OR auto ISO ON/OFF, but rather an ISO value AND auto ISO on/off. They compliment each other, as the ISO value becomes the lower limit of the auto iso range. In this way it will not be logical to have options in same menu that compliemt each other instead of options that exclude each other!

I don't really get the need for a minimum ISO within auto - a maximum yes, but minimum? Other cameras (including X10 and X-Pro 1) have ISO and auto-ISO values in the same menu, the auto with a high value to choose. Most with another menu to set the minimum shutter speed, which is not changed often, if at all. That makes it VERY easy to switch between auto and manual ISO settings and to set the high limit in auto at the same time to switch to auto. The X100's method of including auto iso, the high limit, and the minimum shutter speed in an entirely separate menu has always been baffling to me.

It's quite a lot easier to work around this now that they put a shortcut to the auto iso menu in the same sub-menu as the manual iso settings. But its still a menu-based operation requiring a number of button pushes. Not really suitable for fn or raw button shortcut, IMHO.
