Just Posted: Canon ELPH 510 HS (IXUS 1100 HS) Quick Review

By dpreview staff on Mar 1, 2012 at 23:14 GMT

We've just posted our review of the Canon 510 HS (known as the IXUS 1100 HS in Europe). It's a small, stylish point-and-shoot camera with a 12x, 28mm-336mm equiv zoom lens, a backlit 12MP CMOS sensor and a 3.2" touchscreen LCD. Although Canon has recently refreshed its PowerShot lineup, the ELPH 510 HS, released late last year still boasts a compelling feature set - is it the perfect pocketable point-and-shoot? Read our quick review to find out.

The IXUS 500 (10.1 MP) actually used a 1/2.3" 16MP sensor but cropped. effectively making it a 1/3" sensor ( the area which actually recieves light). Is it the same with the camera?

I was confused but then realized you are using the uk/europe model numbers.

Tranlating to english IXUS 500 HS= the new Elph 520 HS.

Gosh canon needs to hire a new Chief Naming Officer....

Thanks for the review!

Question: Does the wrist strap have a stylus thingy and was using the touchscreen better with the stylus? Older models included a little nub on the wrist strap restriction thingy, does this model have it and if so did it help cure your touch screen woes????
Suggestion: Canon's model numbers are somewhat confusing. It would be nice to have some help figuring out where this fits in the Canon Constelation as often both the old and new version are available at retail.

You would think the 510 HS would be the upgrade to the 500 HS but from the specs, it looks more like an upgrade to the SD4500? Right now the SD4500 is selling out at $159 while the 510 HS selling for a hefty $279.

For those shopping now, other than the extra 2X zoom are there enough improvements to justify the extra expense? A few lines comparing this model to it's predecessor would be a big help making that decisions...

Thanks for your comments. No, the Canon 510 HS does not come with a stylus although I doubt it would make much, if any, difference when using the touchscreen.

The 510 HS and the 500 HS are pretty different cameras, despite the similarity in names. The latter offers aperture- and shutter-priority modes and a 4.4x zoom; the 510 has no manual exposure modes and features a 12x zoom. The 510 is a closer relative to the SD4500 (10x optical zoom but no touchscreen) and, essentially, replaces that model

Why are you guys reviewing a year old camera? At least review some from last last year instead, not one that just got obsoleted.

It was announced late August 2011, it's not a year old.

What the????

I have a 500HS with, I think the same touch-screen interface, and it's very responsive. Sometimes too responsive, in fact.

Maybe you had a defective unit?

It's good that you're streamlined the review format - I always used to skip past the boring flowchart of menu options. What's the 120fps slo-mo video like?

I've used 120 and 240 on my 500HS, and they work as-advertised (lower resolution, faster frame rate).
