Just Posted: Canon G1 X studio test samples

We've shot our standard test scene with Canon's latest PowerShot G1 X large-sensor compact camera. The images have been shot using a production-standard G1 X and, as usual, have been shot in both Raw and JPEG with all original files available for download. The images have been added to our comparison tool and the G1 X preview. They can also be called-upon from other reviews or the standalone comparison tool.

Note: The G1 X's lens is slightly soft towards the corners at the close focus distance used for this test. We would recommend looking at our real-world samples before drawing firm conclusions in this regard.

V1 iso3200 holds up very well compared to this much larger sensor. Viva V1!

really? maybe keep up with other Nikon dSLRs... (APS-C and FF)

but, details are excessively mushed on the V1...

sdyue - you can click around in that image ad nauseum to find textures, colors and detail to support your claim, but overall the g1x doesn't stand out. I'd expect more from the latest sensor, 4X larger than the V1. Fact is the V1 files are going to be hard to beat for 8x12 prints. The g1x is a fairly big and odd point and shoot. I'd have been interested if they'd have equipped it with a faster fixed focal length or less ambitious zoom range.

Canon G1 X..... Looks like it was designed in some Canon back-room lab 5-6 years ago, and just now coming to market.

And why is it priced at a mind-numbing EIGHT HUNDRED DOLLARS, one migh ask? Well, it was probably the same set of resident Canon bean counters that cooked up the whopping US$800 for the G1 X that cooked up the equally preposterous US$16,000 price for their EOS C300.

Canon specs and pricing -- way out in Deep Space Ninety-nine, I'm rather afraid.

For ISO 6400 RAW, it's not as good as T3i, but better than Panasonic GX1 and Nikon V1/J1. The latter shows terribly blotchy noise with in-camera RAW NR... yikes.

at the moment, if the OM-D is limited to a m43 sensor, then it will suffer no less than remaining m43, apart from much larger bulkier 'compact' zoom lenses.

The OM-D is not "limited" to a Micro Four Thirds sensor. That is just what kind of sensor it has. You state it as a limitation, as if it is a bad thing to have a 4/3" sensor. Which it is not.

In fact there are many advantages to 4/3" format. I have been shooting on that format for about 3 years and I have made prints as large as 144"x134" that look phenomenal from those cameras.

I really think that you exhibit a quite unfair bias and obvious hatred for 4/3" format, for no real reason. You seem to think that it is not a good format, but that's just your own biased opinion, and obviously is not shared by the majority of consumers in Japan who are now flocking to this revolutionary new format.

Myself, I like Canon. I think the Rebels and 5D's, etc., are great machines. I would purchase a 1D X if I could afford it. But I'm more than happy with my Olympus E-5 and E-P1, and looking very forwards to the OM-D.

I think the G1X is a mind-boggler, but I'm sure many will sell. Look at Fuji

Oh and for your information, I work for a Canon Authorized Reseller, and I sell many Canon products. That does not mean I cannot state my own opinions regarding these matters but I have every reason to wish for the success of the G1X, since I will be selling them to my customers in a few weeks.

I just know that when I have a customer and they are asking me whether they should spend $800 on a PowerShot G1X, or if they should purchase something like an Oly E-P3, or Lumix GX1, or Nikon V1, or Sony NEX, then I will explain to them the differences of going each way.

I'm sure there will be some people like you who do not care about being able to have a fast aperture, or an electronic viewfinder, or options for wider angles or more telephoto than a set range, etc. Rather they just want something that covers the basic needs and gives 4/3"-sensor-level quality. Then the G1X will be a great option.

But that's going to be a vast minority. Most people don't have an $800 secondary camera! LOL.

My favorite part is the comparison PowerShot G1X / Powershot G10, RAW and JPEG, at low iso.
In bright light, the 4-year-old G10 is still my favorite Powershot. I'm not even talking about its iso 80.

i use firefox too...
but that should make no difference

as an alternative, just use DPR's own comparison page url

here's my url (ah, ha... shortened, so some won't be so annoyed):

i have a personal starting comparison baseline models of:
5DMkII vs D3s vs A900 (since there is no D3x) vs 645D
set to their lowest ISOs, you can adjust as needed:

http://tinyurl.com/78bp72x

btw... DPR calls google versions of shortened urls a 'swear word' ... :\

ooo, i have high expectations... (lens limitations notwithstanding)
:D

as imaging-resources image comparisons have already shown...
dpreviews studio image comparisons bear out the same level of expected IQ too

that, as expected... having inherited 60D/7D pixel pitch and gaining improvements, has put the G1X deep into APS-C IQ territory regardless of system format (dSLR or mirrorless)... this is Absolutely great for prosumer bridge cameras like the PowerShot G... Yay!

(if you cannot see it, look at a refreshed version of other comparison models, and the new listing will then include the new model)

@ TrojMacReady... comparisons I want to emphasize... is my point, that others may overlook:

e.g. same example as given above, but explicit comparison:

5DMkII vs D3s vs 60D vs Powershot G1X
Queen EII's forehead/face @ ISO 1600

http://tinyurl.com/8a5n6hn

5DMkII vs D3s vs 60D vs Powershot G1X
Globe @ ISO 6400
http://tinyurl.com/7kjms3p

change to other dSLRs, mirrorless (NEX, SLT, 43d, m43, CX) models, and ISOs as needed...

(happy now?)

P.S.... DPR refers to googles version of tiny urls a 'swear word' (goo)

This camera still would need a decent lens. Not the one it comes with.

By sdyue (Feb 16, 2012)

at least the lens it DOES come with is already rival to other ILC systems with hardly stellar lenses either... so, who can afford better(or multiple) lens on those systems, without going FF systems or very pricey lenses from specialty lens makers?

So, as a Canon marking shill, perhaps you can explain why the G1X RAW images on the DPR samples look decidedly softer than most mirror-less ILC equivalent cameras?

Also, while the camera may well be decent, this level of spamming on the discussion boards only implies desperation to try to promote it. It does nothing as such for the reputation of either Canon nor the camera.

I love taking photos.
I don't care what brand.
I don't earn money from it and do it as a hobby.
I'm lucky enough to have what may be considered a relatively decent camera.
I go out shooting as much as possible to try and improve.
If someone spends all their time commenting on specs how often do they take photos?
I find it interesting to check the profiles of those who comment a lot (too much!) and see what gear and galleries they actually have.
When I stop laughing I feel sorry for them.
Any camera is better than none at all.
Comments anyone?
Also only an idea may be to reduce the number of characters allowed to make a comment although as I have seen here someone would just submit many more posts rather than several long ones!

There are many stellar lenses on Micro Four Thirds, and a couple on Sony NEX (they got a late start). So I don't know what your argument is, but frankly the G1X lens seems a bit soft compared to even the basic offering of Lumix or Oly, if Imaging Resource is any judge. But then again I'll wait and test one for myself when I have it in my hands in a couple of weeks :D
