Pentax reveals K lens roadmap for 2012 and 2013

Alongside the announcement of the K-01 mirrorless camera, Pentax has updated its K-mount lens roadmap to include planned releases for 2012 and 2013. In a PDF document published on the company's website, it indicates that three lenses will be introduced during the course of this year - a 50mm 'standard' lens, a superzoom in the 18-200mm class, and a super telephoto in the 500-600mm range. Four zooms covering the full wideangle to telephoto range are projected to follow later, alongside a 1.4x teleconverter.

As usual we're a little surprised to see a 50mm lens projected for an APS-C system - we find it something of a 'no-mans land' focal length between the 'normal' and 'portrait' ranges, but to be fair 50mm lenses seem to be selling well anyway. If it's relatively compact to suit the K-01 it could make an interesting combination. The same can't be said for the super-telephoto - this really isn't going to handle well on a camera without an eye-level viewfinder, so will be best-suited to DSLRs like the K-5.

I don't see any problems with a 50mm 1.8 on APS-C. Tons of people use them as 80mm equivalent portrait lenses, indeed being close to the classic 85mm prime lens!

The 31mm f1.8 is a full frame (film) lens isn't it?
It IS a little odd that all of the manufacturers of APS format slrs sell 50mm lenses and treat 35-ish lenses, which are really "normal" for that format, like red-headed step children.
How about an purpose designed APS sized 33mm f1.4 that isn't the size of a bazooka?

(This is a criticism of ALL the companies, not just Pentax.)

Actually Nikon has a well regarded 35mm f1.8 DX (APS) lens. The reason there aren't any faster is probably that a 35mm lens must be retro-focal on a DSLR mount (while 50mms don't), and that increases the lens size especially with larger apertures.

it really really drives me mad... can we have a normal, affordeable lense that is equivalent to a 35/43 mm in the old 135? retrofocus, front focus, slow, screwdriven... who cares?!

Yeah, something a little wider than the 35 f/2 is needed. The 21 f3.2 just isn't fast enough.

I bought a Sigma 24 f/1.8, it is great, also full frame (use it on a film camera as well), but weighs a tonne.

DA 14 seems to be a great lense, but is all but affordeable. And thereabout you have limiteds only....
With modern sensors and 2.8 limitation, a 20something f 3.5 in "plastic shape" could be light and cheap enough to sell tons. Anytime i take a 35mm "capeable" combo (XA2, Oly Trip, anything with my F24-50) I feel i really miss an "always on lens" of such length... :(

Unless you are a professional shooting some very specific things like high speed sports or wildlife, there is a lens for you here. And that is just from Pentax and just what is in current production. Sigma and Tamron make a broad range of Pentax mount lenses and the secondary market for Pentax is HUGE.

True, there are some gaps. Goodness there is no 19mm prime. Or a 62mm. Or a 41-93mm zoom! How in the world can we live without the 41-93mm zoom!!!

You can always complain about the lenses that are MISSING. Me, I am going to keep shooting with the ones that exist.

Pentax has 24 lenses in production, 7 pending

By comparison, Nikon has 75. But if you are comparing apples to apples, Nikon only has 23 lenses with VR where as EVERY pentax lens benefits from in body SR. And only 22 of those will autofocus on every Nikon currently selling. In fact, of the 75 lenses, 20 wont autofocus on a D5100 or lower and 11 are manual focus.

Think about that, if you want a lens that does everything we expect as normal on a Pentax, you are limited to 23 Nikon lenses - one less than pentax has in production RIGHT NOW. 9 of those 22 have an MSRP of $5000 or more.

Also, if you look at the lenses that all work on Pentax with no adapters, you're looking at a collection of millions of lenses – all made by Pentax and currently supported.

There's more than one reason why we like Pentax... ;)

They are all listed as DA or DA* - neither of which have an image circle for full frame - you need D-FA for that.

DA*55 f1.4 is a full frame lens.
DA*200 F2.8 is a full frame lens (same as FA*200)

D-FA lenses are full frame lenses
DA 40 limited IS a full frame lens (same as the old manual focus 40mm pancake )

The roadmap still shows that Pentax has no plan to release a 400mm telephoto lens. That is pretty disappointing. Used 400mm lenses in Pentax mount are commanding high prices, higher than in other mounts. The demand is there, but Pentax seems to ignore that market segment.

Finally, we're going to get a long telephoto. My only concern is that it's not a DA* lens - I sure hope that it's *not* going to be a reflex 550mm f8 (or f11).

I'm considering buying a K-5 based on feature set and image quality - but the thing that holds me back is the small size: I have big hands and small cameras are a pain to handle. I tend to prefer Canon's tanks just on the physical size of the things.

So I just can't get too excited about mirrorless cameras shrinking even more. Someone needs to market handlebars for these things that screw into the tripod threads.

Pentax needs more inexpensive lenses like the 35mm/2,4 for 180 EUR (I have one and am really happy with it). Having primes for 500-1000 EUR is nice, but for normal users pretty expensive. So better having plastic-mount 50mm/f1,8 for 200 EUR than space-technology-metal 50mm/1,4 for 1000 eur. And even better would be a low-priced 20-30mm prime pancake (a cheaper equivalent to DA 21 Limited costing 500 EUR) for cca. 200-250 eur. Having such a lens I would never take it off my K-r (the 35mm is sometimes long).

I agree with you entirely! The 35mm is a great little lens, and it's cheap (so I can afford it), but most of the time it's too long. I wish, too, there was a 21mm (23.3mm? Rsrs), small and dirt cheap lens to add to my bag. Best regards!

Orange are DA* lenses (high quality, SDM focusing, weathersealed), purple are FA lenses (full-frame, 35mm film compatible), and green are the rest.

My take:

"I think the K-01 is a watershed camera for Pentax. The K-01 address the two biggest arguements against the current crop of mirrorless systems - small sensors and limited lenses. It is the first mirrorless camera with a "traditional" lens mount and a full range of lenses. Not a couple of lenses and a bunch of adapters. The APS-C sensor is 30% bigger than 4/3 sensor and there are more current production K Mount lenses than all other mirrorless systems combined (including the Q). And while P-TTL flashes are not up to Nikon or Canon standards, they are better than any other mirrorless has. Bottom line - the K-01 is the first mirrorless than dosent make you compromise the most important part of photography - the image."

fully agree, wished Nikon would have done it at the same way - some kind of Nikon D8000 APS-C mirror-less! instead of these expensive V1/J1 which are already on limit with their sensor size

The trouble is it doesn't address the biggest argument in favour of mirror-less cameras and that is smaller size.

Why would I want to put my Sony 70-300G lens on a Nex even if it didn't need an adaptor? The handling would still be rubbish.

The same will apply to using that very nice looking 80-250 F4 on a Pentax K-01.

It totally defeats the object of mirror-less cameras to stick large lenses on them UNLESS your object is to simply do away with the optical viewfinder and provide a d-slr replacement. If you do that then Sony has shown the right way to do it with the A33/55/65/77 with the first two being very compact cameras anyway.

The K-01 is neither one thing nor the other. The K mount lenses make it not a compact system and the design means it won't work as well (eg focus as fast) as a d-slr.

Pentax lenses are great but the K-01 just highlights what I said about Nex - the lenses make the system too big to be an alternative to a dslr outfit.

Not quite sure what to make of the DA* ultra zoom either. From the markings on the chart, it almost looks like a 24-80. Pretty useless for APS-C. I doubt they can make an 18-200 f/2.8? Unless they're turning the DA* nomenclature to mean weather-sealed only, and no longer constant aperture and weather-sealed.

Of course they aren't going to make a /2.8 18-200mm zoom. The chart makes it look as if the DA* is going to be about a 17-83mm, a very useful range on APS-C indeed. I wonder how you conclude a 24mm wide angle from that chart, where the bar clearly goes well below 20mm.

All I can say about this design is: "Oh! My God!" :( Then I'm looking for the feature that I care the most: weather seal, and there is none! This is definitely a K-r replacement or its evil brother instead of K5 replacement. I guess I'll save my money for a better camera later or buy K5 when it is going cheaper in price.

Finally a new ultra wide angle lens, never been fond with the 12-24 for it's price seeing that third party lenses by Tamron and Sigma are way cheaper but still almost achieve the same quality. Hopefully it'll be a treat and not horribly overpriced. Also good to see a new 50mm might actually get it to replace my old analog 50mm f/1,7 in case it's not to expensive. :)

Hey didn't Pentax release a 645D about 2 years ago?
How many lenses have they gotten to market since its release?
Maybe they should make this a priority?
Also What advantage does a Mirrorless system really have when it still has the retrofocal elements that allow a mirror to be there, But they just leave the mirror out? Surely the MAJOR reason for a Smaller mirrorles camera system is that its smaller? I like Pentax, but really? an adaptor would have been a more elegant solution to backward compatibility? No?

True, they should get some 645d lenses out, but as far as retrofocus elements go, I would think they can build the lenses where the rear element goes deeper into the body allowing them to not have the retrofocus design.

Live view, high magnification manual focus. No mirror slap. Exposure simulation.

Possible tethered shooting since you are reading out from the sensor anyhow.

Personally I thought the NEX method of different mount plus an adapter was more elegant but I'll wait to see if Pentax has done a good job with this new body.

I'm more interested in a mirrorless 645D anyhow.

It hard to compare and almost unfair - to compare the K5 and the K-01. The K5 is smaller than all DSLR in the same range and has a great unique set of features and the K-01 is still smaller.
Compare them to the D7000 or whatever and you will soon see there is virtually no way to go smaller without having to resort to a smaller sensor.

I have a Ricoh GXR and it is waaaaay smaller than a K-5 and has an APS-C sensor. NEX too are APS-C Cameras - ever seen one?

The K-01 is more than double of the size. I too think, they miss the opportunity to really take the benefits of mirrorless cameras.

Just leave the mirror out and cut the viewfinder? Mhhh...

The K01 is the size it is because it retains compatibility with Pentax's full K mount lenses.

Want a smaller aps-c MILC from Pentax? Then be prepared to invest in an entirely new line of lenses, or buy an adapter which would negate all your size savings anyway.

These two announcements go a long way to calming all those frayed Pentaxian nerves. It was obvious this was all coming, just needed time and Ricoh only took over3 months ago???

Interesting use of the word 'Standard' with 50mm. They don't make media announcements for fun and they will have worded things carefully.

The new lenses look like many a wish list I have seen on these forums for a while. Good times ahead.............

If I were to buy a mirrorless, I'd buy a Sony. But I'd lust for this. I never imagined myself becoming a fan of Sony, but their NEX cameras are really impressive (and their a77 SLT is the most photographer friendly camera I've ever used).

...But this? This Pentax is sexy.

I agree. I have owned all the gear, some MF, Canon 5D2, Nikon etc. But I find that Pentax and Sony are the two companies that attract me these days.

I have the NEX5N. It could be so much better than it is. The only good thing about it is the sensor.

The K-01 has essentially the same sensor. So I am interested...!

They can't and don't.
While the a77 is a reasonable comparison i'm no fan of the NEX system's ridiculous lens size to camera size ratio. If the lenses were as good the pentax and similar sizing then it would be a totally different equation, but they're not close.

By the way, doesn't it ring a bell that Pentax call the replacement of the FA50 a "standard lens" ? They're not dumbass ! If they call it "standard", it may be a clue.. The DA lenses don't mean like "DX" for Nikon, it is just for digital cameras, no matter the size of the sensor (for instance, the DA* 55 f/1.4 can be use on FF bodies). And after all, nobody saw the K-01 coming until two or three days ago. I pray for a FF !

I've been waiting for the 1.4 teleconverter for sooo long now! 2013! I'm not sure I have the patience to wait that much longer. Before there was always the hope that it might be announced any day.

The long zoom does sound interesting. I'm still using a manual focus Pentax 500 mm f4.

It looks like they have plans to add some long telephoto lenses to the lineup. IMO, plugging that gap in their lens lineup will make their system more attractive.

The DA telezoom (100-400?) looks particularly interesting.

I expect it to be an inexpensive replacement (?) for FA 50/1.4, similar in spirit to the DA 35/2.4 AL. My guess, DA 50/1.8, priced to move at $175-225.

50*1.5 = 75. 50 *1.6 = 80. These are pretty useful portrait focal lengths, I don't understand the "no-mans land' comments about them. Sure, maybe 56 would hit the venerable "85" spot on...

Agree completely. This seems to be a hangup at dpreview. The notion that a focal length has no utility if it doesn't jibe with conservative notions of what constitutes "normal" or "portrait" is just odd.

Agreed, 85mm on full frame is one of the well-accepted focal lengths for portraiture. Surely a 50mm on APS-C is a perfect and cheap focal length for portraits.

Pentax droped FA names of lenses many years ago.
Some DA lenses cover FF, some - can't. DA lenses means it's for DSLR.

There's a 100/2.8 Macro. Or if you mean 85-135 equiv, there's a 70/2.4 (~105eq) and 77/1.8 (~115eq)

Cameras usually take at least 2 years to develop. Ricoh has only just taken charge of Pentax, so it's unrealistic to expect much involvement.

I've suggested in the past this would be a good idea too. About 20-40, faster than f/4, 'limited' look & feel. My wish would be for f/3.2-constant if it can be kept small, f/3.5-constant at the slowest.

This clearly indicates two things:

1, Ricoh have ambitions for the brand and plan to bring out more cameras.

2, While the K-01 is funky, strange and pretty left-field, and Pentax are to be praised for daring to be different, they also have new DSLR's in the pipeline.

I might have agreed with the 50mm No Man's Land thing a year ago, but I took my longer and shorter lenses off my K5 on a whim and fired up my SMCP-FA 50mm f/1.4 that had been lonely in the bag and I swear I've barely taken it off in 3 months : )

I won't buy the new 50, as my F50 1.7 sits on my K20D and the FA50 1.4 is on the K-5 ;-)

I hope Pentax do deliver on their longer lenses this time - they are seriously overdue, and I would rather buy pentax than independant. But consider this, no one else (ie major camera makers) offers an affordable lens over 300mm nowadays....
