Olympus launches TG-320 rugged compact

Pre-CES: Olympus has launched the TG-320, an affordable rugged compact camera with 3.6x zoom lens. The lens covers a range equivalent to a 28-102mm lens on a 35mm film camera. It is waterproof to a depth of 3m (10ft) and is also shockproof, freezeproof and dustproof. It features a 14 megapixel sensor and can capture 720p HD movies underwater.

Oh, and Scene Modes like Cuisine, Documents, Underwater Snapshot (!), Pet (Cat) and Pet (Dog)... what a progress! This industrial attempt at replacing photographic knowlege with modes so that users feel there is nothing more to learn... if it weren't sad, it'd be funny... :(

Well, I wish someone would finally recognize the need to replace good old Nikonos (III or V) with something as versatile but in digital version. Why is there no camera capable of withstanding at least 6 Bar (-50 meters) of water pressure yet? It would hardly cost $1.- more per piece to add the structural strength to something like this one. The cameras that can sink to -3 meters should have already set the standard for every compact. IMO, every camera should be able to withstand rain and swimming by now, but manufacturers still keep producing devices tested "for home and office use"....

I'd would be guessing it's all those electrical interconnects they want to put on all the new ones (mic/headph. jacks, power jacks, hdmi, usb, etc). Seems like them moment they remove at least one, some people seem to cry. In general, I'm assuming that more electronic pieces instead of mechanical ones makes a bit harder the design, particularly for a "compact" camera.

Well, if you removed all unnecessary contacts nobody really uses, the remaining mini-usb could nicely fit alongside battery and memory card and you could remove one opening+cover (which is 50% less chance for water to enter the camera body). And if some designer really thought such a camera through, there would be reed switches on the inside and one or two sliding magnets on the outside... Even with interchangeable lens system, such camera would have just two O-ring sealed openings (one for lens, the other for battery, memory card and USB access.
There's more, but it's all just wishful thinking, I'm afraid...

- No USB 3.0?
- No Full Frame sized sensor?
- 4X? What about some 10x zoom!
- And F3.5? What about F1.8 at least!??
- Only .6fps? What about 10?
- Where's the GPS?

I really need to take full zoomed in burst of pictures in very low light under extreme conditions with a very small compact camera! This is certainly a NO buy!

Kidding! :) ... But let's face it, we know some people around here will start complaining ;-)
