Panasonic DMC-LX5 firmware 2.0 brings image and handling improvements

By dpreview staff on Aug 26, 2011 at 05:00 GMT

Panasonic has updated the firmware for its LX5 high-end enthusiast compact. The update promises faster AF times and improved noise reduction for images shot at ISO 1600 or 3200. White balance under artificial light has also been tweaked, as well as a series of operational and handling improvements being made. There are revisions too for image stabilization in movie mode, the addition of a 'Miniature mode' processing mode. Coming 13 months after the camera's launch, the move continues Panasonic's habit of continuing to invest in its enthusiast models well into their lifecycle. The firmware will be available from September 13th.

Press Release:

Panasonic announces firmware updates for its popular LUMIX DMC-LX5 digital camera

SECAUCUS, NJ (August 26, 2011) – Panasonic today announced new firmware updates for the LUMIX DMC-LX5 digital camera. The version 2.0 firmware, available on September 13, will help to improve performance and enhance usability by upgrading key camera functions.

Software updates include a redesigned algorithm which will speed up autofocus time, giving the LUMIX LX5 extremely fast AF speeds. The High ISO Noise Reduction Mode is a new feature that will offer deliberate noise reduction for images shot at high ISO 1600/3200 sensitivity. There will also be a significant improvement of the performance of auto white balance adjustment in low light situations.

For functional upgrades, the LUMIX LX5 Active Mode will be integrated into the effective hand-shake correction system POWER O.I.S., helping users shoot more stable video even while walking. Expanding on the My Color Mode settings, the popular Miniature Effect Mode will provide the ability for a user to focus on an object and blur surroundings; a technique that can be applied in both photo and video. Also, the conventional 60-second shutter speed limit will be extended to the max 250 seconds, which will assist in shooting illuminated night sky and darkened scenery.

Additional enhancements include improved shutter operation to incorporate continuous focusing with half-shutter and full-shutter shooting. Using both autofocus and manual focus will be made even easier in situations where focus precision is desired. For instance, once a focus area has been set it can easily be retrieved, making this a convenient function for tripod shooting. Finally, the brightness, contrast/saturation and red/blue tint of the LCD monitor and external viewfinder will be adjusted to reproduce color settings which are more true to the subject.

The new firmware will be available worldwide on September 13, 2011 at 1:00am ET at the following http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/.  For more information about Panasonic LUMIX digital cameras, please visit www.panasonic.com/lumix.

Looking into the Gear Shop, I just discovered Version 2 of the firmware. I followed the links, found the firmware and installed it. Much less painful than I expected. The directions were explicit and clear.

Thumbs-up to Panasonic.

DezM, it's a great pity that they didn't do anything about *flash compensation*! :(

For the life of me, I can't understand why such a useful feature is buried in the menu, when there are 3 or 4 ways it could be made more readily available (Fn button, Quick menu, left arrow button, the wheel)!

I've installed the new fw 2.0 in my LX5. Works fine, with nice improvements. Welll. I miss the playback in review mode and a bulb option, but hoping in a next upgrade: 2.1?

With this 2.0 fw I experienced a faster battery drain. And you?

So nice to hear this, i have been considering getting a pen for the miniature effect alone, and i wonder how fast the improved af can be, will i be able to catch kittens now?

Also look forward to see if the skin tones are better, i have been using manual wb indoor and even found it hard to nail with raw

One thing i also would like is time lapse, i guess they left it out due to the battery drain issue, though it works fine on the sigma dp series

I'd like the option to use DNG RAW format. It would let me use my post processing software without having to upgrade or jump through conversion hoops.

The only thing I want from Panasonic is an updated version of their RAW CODEC which works with 64-bit operating systems!

Two that I would have liked but not included AFAIK:

Camera standby mode where *only" the screen went to sleep - so ready for instant action.

Replace the annoying "zoom will now return to same position...." with an indication of the focal length it will actually return to.

And, like the previous contributor - a REMOTE!!

Time Lapse would be useful.

While a small camera, the LX5 is still a high performing camera and should have the option of a wired or wireless remote.

the only thing missing is a decent time-lapse feature. You can add it to the Canon S95 but it doesn't have the 24 mm. We live in an imperfect world...

I wish they would've added a couple of more "fixes" to the firmware update like:

* Saving the last setting for the Self-Timer. You have to set it each time you use it. I use the 2-second self-timer when not using my cable release on a tripod.

* Flash compensation control added as an option to the Scroll wheel when the Flash is popped up (right now, it's buriend in the Menu). Than you'll see EV compensation, Aperture or Shutter adjustments and flash compensation. When the Flash is down or off, it won't appear among the Scroll wheel's options.

I'd also like to see an OEM hardware accessory to give us Wireless remote capability, to use on the accessory port. A remote is practical & would eliminate the need for the above Self-timer shots.

Awesome! I was wondering when they'd have a firmware update for the LX5. They updated the LX3 a few times so I expected an update or two for the LX5. Great news :-) And yes, how COULD the autofocus get any faster??? :-) Wonderful.

Great work from Panasonic. Several useful improvement for me.

1. Faster focus, how fast it can be, close to ep3, I hope (dreaming), ... that's great!

2. Lcd brightness/contrast adjustment is something missing from existing fw. It was too bright. Again, good news to see that fixed.

3. Improved OIS for video. Not a video fans but the quality is very good except that handheld is always shaky even at 24mm. It is great to see that it will be improved next month.

And what about correcting skin tones under artificial light, or under any light other than "sun", sticky focus area size and timer settings, and maybe improving step zoom speed ?

I would also wish a noise reduction in low contrast captures at iso 80, but I believe that is beyond sensor baseline sensitivity / capabilities.

Borrowing, or at least mimicking, the jpeg color tables from cousin Leica dlux5, whose jpeg output is openly superior, could be easily done, though.

I finally hope that the lcd brightness will be addressed as to bring it more in line with the captured image, as as it is now there are up to 2 stops difference between lcd and actual capture brightness - i.e. the lcd is useless as to evaluate exposure.

Glad to see that Panasonic backs up its products.

PLEASE:
1. Get rid of the annoying dialog 'the zoom will now resume'...
2. Add an intervalometer.
3. Add the functionality for tethered control of the camera from an iPhone o iPad via the USB port.

Heck.. tell me the API and I'll write the app for you. It ain't hard.
