Just updated: For Sale and Wanted forum features improved

By dpreview staff on Aug 12, 2011 at 01:12 GMT

Just updated: Features added to 'For Sale and Wanted' forum. It's been three weeks since we introduced the long-requested For Sale forum and, at launch, we said we'd add features to improve the experience, if it was popular. Well it's been a big success, so we've developed a range of special features specifically to make the forum more useful and easier to use. Not only have we added the ability to withdraw or close threads (and an option for hiding closed threads), we've also created a feedback system that allows buyers and sellers to rate one another.

Marking a thread as closed

One of the features we think will be particularly useful is the ability to mark a thread as closed when the item in question has been bought or sold. Or, if you've simply changed your mind, you can choose to withdraw a thread.

The options to mark an item as Sold or Bought, or to withdraw the thread, appear above the first message in the thread:

You'll see we've also added a 'Contact Poster' button at the top right, which allows you to easily send a private message to the poster of that thread.

Marking an item as Sold or Bought then provides you with the opportunity to leave feedback about the person you've bought from or sold to, and gives them the same opportunity. Withdrawing a thread simply deletes it and gives you no chance to leave or receive feedback from the transaction.

Once a thread has been closed, other users are then able to filter out closed threads when they view the forum:

Providing Feedback

If you tag a trading partner, after a deal has been struck, you can then leave feedback about one another. If you choose to leave feedback, you have up to seven days to modify your response, so you can update the results when you've received your item.

This feedback is aggregated and appears in your user profiles, allowing you to build up a reputation:

does the feedback still work? I tried saving feedback but it doesn't do anything, seems I cant leave feedback for a closed transaction.

It would be nice if you could catargories forsale items by MFG. Like Canon, Nikon, Pentax, ect. and also Lighting, Studio, Specialty and any others that you could think of. Take a look at Fred Mirandas forsale forum.

how about some ''subcategories'' like ''Canon, Nikon, pentax, etc.'' or ''bodys, leneses, acessories'''

would make it easier to find the specific lens one needs... as i shoot pentax, i'm not interested in reading 100 canon&nikon offerings ;)
would be great I think!

Thank you

Blimey! I hadn't even realised there was a FS?Wanted section. I have to agree though it does need filtering for location/brand. I don't think we really need any more than that though.

Is there a way to filter out the closed messages from RSS feeds?

7 days is not long enough to modify feedback if you initially must post feedback immediately. I buy and sell a lot on FM forums and there are many instances in which this will not work. For instance: Item not shipped until a Paypal e-check has cleared or money order is received, shipping delays in transit, esp. at holiday time (I once had a package shipped to me Priority mail the day after payment that took over 2 weeks to arrive!), shipping delayed (mutually agreed upon) because either seller or buyer is on vacation, etc. Just my 2 cents- Marilyn

Hi,

Thank you for your feedback. Currently you don't have to provide feedback immediately. You can wait until you received the payment / item. The time limit is calculated after the first feedback submission (for typos, etc.).

Thanks,

Still missing something... the thread is one big forum.. better to have subforums dedicated to sales of a particular brand or format..

Unnecessary if the search function is adequate. See FM for a practical example.

The forum needs to be sorted according to the offered DELIVERY boundaries. Eg. a Brit offering something for sale should be able to check boxes (besides the UK of course), the EU, Continental Europe, NA, WW, etc.

The beauty would be, the irrelevant posts for the potential buyer would be displayed greyed out at the bottom (like the ignore list in the forums), depending on the nationality of the buyer.

Secondly, sorting by brand is a necessity. At least for the five top sellers.

Not sure if this has been mentioned previously. I suspect that some sellers may forget to mark items as sold, so that they remain in the list indefinitely and clutter it up and cause frustration when you spot something you've been searching for only to find that it sold ages ago.

I would prefer a time limit after which listings would be automatically deleted, say 28 days, then if the item is still available you simply re-list it.

Another request for, 'Filter by Country'. As the list gets longer I would not want to plough through pages and pages to view just those offered in the UK.

- filter buy/sell
- filter by country
- filter lens/camera body/other gear

Buy/sell displayed together is too messy to browse.

Provide filters to display only (For Sale) threads, or only (Wanted) threads.

Things need to be categorised. Which then need to be a filter.
Also as people have already mentioned filter by country. Its just a massive messy list right now.

I cannot read this page; there are graphics and tables over lapping the text based (I think) right hand side of the screen. The HTML is corrupted or buggy - for me at least.

I'm looking forward to this site/area of DPReview being viewable.

Safari 5.0.5 on Mac 10.6.7 misrendered this page as described. Also the feed page is misrendered in Vienna (newsreader.) All older articles and home page look fine. Effect is the same whether article page is accessed directly or through prev/next links.

And the 360* Browser on iPad2 doesn't work either : same problème, the left column is empty, while the images mask the text in the right column.
