SLR Magic releases 26mm F1.4 Toy Lens for Micro Four Thirds

By dpreview staff on Jul 8, 2011 at 19:00 GMT

SLR Magic has launched a 26mm F1.4 manual focus 'toy' lens for Micro Four Thirds. The 52mm equivalent lens comes with replaceable aperture and focus rings, seven colors of which are supplied. Panasonic owners looking longingly at Olympus' Art Filters (or PEN owners wanting to avoid the associated frame lag) might enjoy the toy-lens shooting experience. The lens is available from Japanese website Gizmoshop, which has placed a series of sample images on photo sharing site Flickr. (From DCWatch)

If you read the original Japanese, it prices it at 9800 yen, which is more like 120 USD. That is a LOT of money, though I'll admit to liking the look of the results.

Like I said below, it's a relabelled version of a CCTV lens that can be bought for about $20 on eBay. Search for CCTV 25mm f/1.4 and you'll find plenty of them. Grab that and a cheap c-mount adapter and you're set.

Is there/will there be a DSLR version?

This is just a rebadged version of the Feihua 25mm f/1.4 CCTV lens for C-mount that sells for $20 on eBay. The $60-100 markup is pretty shameless...

It's a lovely lens and I like the original version a lot, but obviously not worth the absurd price gouging.

It should say, "SLR Magic launched a 26mm F1.4 manual focus 'toy' lens for Micro Four Thirds about six months ago, if not more."

I love the swirls.

Would this "Toy" lens be presented here in DPR's news section, if it were for any other system but for Four Thirds?

"Panasonic owners looking longingly at Olympus' Art Filters"
"(or PEN owners wanting to avoid the associated frame lag) might enjoy the toy-lens shooting experience."

Whats up with that?

This lens is not news worthy, for any system!

Ow my the sample shoots are terrible! I have their SLR Magic 35/1.7 for E-mount which I enjoy shooting, more than I enjoy the Sony NEX stock lenses. I believe that they have released this lens already and been on the ebay months now. I also believe that SLR Magic decision to buy Noktor f0.95 lens made me very exciting but upon hearing that they're gonna sell it at the same price it's a big joke. $1000 to be exact.

If you're interested in this lens, do yourself a favour and get either a Computar 25mm f/1.3 or a Pentax/Cosmicar 25mm f/1.4 and a $7 C-mount adapter from eBay. Both of those produce better quality images than this lens. I have no problem with 'bad' looking images but the price of the lens has to match the quality and I feel as though the SLR Magic lenses are way overpriced for what they are.

Some people are bored with the too good pictures (for them) and the new trend is to make bad ones.

Good lord. Very bad images.

I have no problem with heavy vignetting, light leaks, crappy brokeh, etc, etc, stuff found on cheap camera / lenses. I even like them sometimes. But that swirling distortion around the edges, on a normal field of view, is just ... yuk.

I'm pretty sure that SLR Magic has been selling this lens on ebay for at least six months.

I have to say the samples look wonderful - although it seems to be a bit of a one-trick pony, with a small subject close-up in the middle. Does that say $79? Looks like a steal.

Yup, this. If I want fuzzy pictures there is photoshop.

Isn't one of the big selling points of Four Thirds "nice lenses"? (At least, it was to me...)

This lens is amazing. It takes the boredom out of photography when perfect lenses grow too familiar! Plus this makes my images look ghostly. :)
