Leica creates mount adapters for S2 medium format DSLR

Leica has developed three mount adapters for its S2 medium format DSLR. The S-V, S-P67 and S-M645 allow users to utilize Hasselblad V, Pentax 67 and Mamiya M645 lenses, respectively. The adapters, built from anodized aluminium and chrome-plated brass will retail for around €580 each and will be available from August. (From Photoscala)

I played with an S2 at a trade event recently - beautiful camera.

If they sold it at M9 +20% they might sell a lot of them.

As if the lenses were the problem...
It's the S2's Body that is a price issue.
Wider options in lenses, sure, very cool, but, how about lowering the price of that body?

Just like the SIGMA SD1, high price too.

Actually Leica is badly oversold an unable to meet demand, and that is the reason for the adapter. Right now, if you manage to find an S2 for sale you may have to wait months to find a lens for it. The adapter lets buyers use a lens that is already available rather than park the $$$ S2 in a closet waiting for a lens.

Entropius, though I agree that the writeup trying to sound fancy, I think that aluminum is easier to work with from a manufacturing standpoint and I am guessing that the chrome-plated brass would be for the mount for reducing friction between the lens and the body of the camera - so there are sound reasons for their choice of material ;)

This ain't no m43. Just searched eBay... mount adapters for Pentax, Hasselblad, Mamiya to S2 are $95 at the low end and over $700 at the top end.

Don't hold your breath for sales volume to drive the price down to $20.

Hong Kong did not wait for Leica, you can already find adapters for Hasselblad, M645 or P67 lenses on the bay. Not at 40$ though, more like 200-500€, and much more for the tilt/shift adapters.

Interesting move. Brings costs down for shooting with an S2 significantly, especially for working pros with an investment in Hasselblad, Mamiya and Pentax 67. And it enlarges the future customer base for Leica S2 lens sales.

Size wise the transition would work from a P67 body to the S2. If you just so happened to have every Pentax 67 lens and was interested in a digital experience the adapter would be an inducement to adopt the Leica system.

The Pentax D also has an adapter and also retains some controls since the lenses were originally designed to be shared between the 67 and 645 bodies.

Because the S2 is marketed to studio photographers who are making a living with their camera who want a medium format DSLR that's as easy to handle as a 5DII. The red dot is quite beside the point for that market segment...

yeah I'm sure that every owner of a 20k$ Leica S2 in the need of use a 3k$ Hasselblad lens will buy cheap hand made by 3rd world kids adapters sold on ebay from Hong Kong.

Actually good analogy because LP's sound noticeably better than mass market 44k CD's or downloads (<48k).

What is frustrating with Leica is they are now so popular there is a waiting list for common lenses - and the eBay markups are ridiculous. Thankfully I bought a shelf load of M glass a decade ago, and the lenses have doubled in value. Leica has become my most cost-efficient purchase (worst being a 5d).
