The BBC News website has published a blog post by professional photographer Matt Dunham, looking back at his year shooting for the Associated Press (AP) picture agency. Dunham was on-hand to capture a wide variety of events this year, from documenting the devastating Tsunami in Japan to capturing the British royal wedding. His post discusses everything from choosing the the moment to the kit he uses and is well worth a read. It comes amidst a week of fascinating guest blog posts looking at different aspects of photojournalism.

Deploying thousands of dollars worth of gear to photograph a royal couple on a balcony seems pointless.

The picture of the bathers was interesting, otherwise I am reminded of Weegee's saying "f8 and be there".

Haven't read it yet. Did he run afoul of the Metropolitan Police in 2011?

Interesting. First I read the exploits of Matt Dunham. The guy has a good eye and has the latest equipment. Can I make the assumption that AP pays for his kit? I'm going to, even if I'm wrong. He gets flown around the world on assignment, has to get the shot (or he wouldn't even have this job) but basically has a photography job as opposed to freelance.

Then I read the exploits of another photog in the same position as Matt. "Here's where we want you to be shooting this event" sort of job. Again, the guy is good.

Then I read about the exploits of a third photog, a "freelancer". Pays for his own gear, has to come up with what event he wants to attend (while paying his own expenses) and then tries to sell his stuff to whoever will buy it at a reduced price.

All three are photogs with skilz, two of them have paying jobs and the third, just as qualified, wonders where his next paycheck is coming from.

The one about ethics was good, too. Oddly the most interesting series of articles I remember reading about the grind of photojournalism was a blog by a chap who shot for the Daily Mirror. Possibly the only times I have ever looked at the Daily Mirror's website. Unfortunately they're gone now, but there's a glimpse at the typical pap kit circa 2009 here:
