Sony USA has said the NEX-7 will begin to ship this month to some customers who pre-ordered it, following a halt in production cause by flooding in Thailand in October. Production is still limited but the company says it will 'aggressively pursue all efforts to restore full capacity' for the NEX-7 and other affected models (which is thought to include the NEX-5N, A65 and A77).

Sony USA statement:

"Sony USA is happy to announce that limited quantities of the new NEX-7 camera will begin shipping to pre-order customers this month. Overall production capacity remains restrained as a result of the recent floods in Thailand, but we've made significant progress recovering our manufacturing capabilities and supply chain. We're continuing to aggressively pursue all efforts to restore full production capability of the NEX-7 and other affected models."

Chaos in Sony customer service - I pre-ordered the day the Nex-7 became available in August, confirmed in November, and had my order canceled on the 8th when the bank put the charge on hold for review. An immediate call to customer service resulted in the order being reinstated with a new reference number - but that new order was then cancelled by level 2 support at Sony the next day. When I called back yesterday they told me to "get in line" because the people who ordered first were getting cameras first. I was then put on hold for an 90 minutes, and then the call was disconnected on their end. Tough times for Sony. It's only a camera - but they are also (I think) trying to build a community of photographers.

Don't forget people the floods in Thailand have put the people out of their homes and jobs.I know we want the cameras real bad but lets think about the poor people that have had their lives uprooted. I am sure if it were us that was making something for over seas consumption and we were flooded out of our homes . The last thing we would think of would be getting the line back up.The product will be made sooner of latter. If its worth anything its worth waiting for. Patience , take a deep breath , and relax . The anticipation of something special is worth it. TIME WILL MAKE IT EVEN BETTER.

My Pre-order was in on Sept 9th. Maybe I'll be one of the lucky first deliveries.

If pre-orders are attended in alphabetical order, based on the first initial of the buyer first name, you may have to wait quite a while.

Being a Japanese company you can never tell how they will choose who gets the first cameras - lol.

huh, you mean like the ones from Amateur Photography, Popular Photography, Luminous Landscapes, DCresource.com, techradar.com, stevehuffphoto.com, or photoreview.com.au... There are other reviews out there too. (and previews e.g. imaging-resource.com)

I know, you're waiting for this site to echo what many others have already said.

According to Sony Japan, the NEX-7 release is now planned for January 27, 2012:

Perhaps a few pre-release units will be made available in the US before that, but I would expect quantities to be almost insignificant.

Sony lacks pancake lens (currently only one, which is not really useful range). Whatever NEX does, I won't buy this bulky thingy (including lens)

In the NEX forum, some people have invented "punched hole" pancakes, which seem to work and make the NEX pocketable.

Pancakes are an optical compromise with naturally poor ergonomics, it's funny how they are the be all and end all for some these days. There is no way I would even carry around a little small GF3 and 14 2.5 in my pants pocket so it's all much of a muchness. The only truly pocketable enthusiast camera is Canons S90/95/100.

I wouldnt buy first series. Who knows what were condition of production, humidity, parts...flooding is bad for electronics.

Anyway, would wait for few months till buying.

Never buy a monday product, or first series.

Sometimes the first series are the best. Like with Panasonic, the first series are build in Japan, and considered better than the large batches build in a low-cost country.

Well these are made in Japan. Later series will be made in Thailand. Wont make a difference to me but there is always snob value of a made in Japan sticker. :)

I am not sure if it's really a first series product. At least the parts are all in use already somewhere else. Sensor, EVF, lenses, firmware. Maybe except for the hotshoe and the tri navi controls.

Extended Service Plan! I'm on the pre-order list and hopeful it arrives prior to overseas trip (where I don't want to carry my 7D and glass for two weeks). Given the circumstances surrounding early production I will pony up for the service plan as insurance; for early adopters Sony should have provided this to buy some good will. Regardless, I'm excited to get this camera into the field.

Buyers should be offered two NEX7 series:
1) BN (before Noah): the antedelluvian beasts,
2) AN (after Noah): ones assembled since the flood.

BN buyers could get a discount price to combat suspicion of mildew, humidity, or submersion.

They indicate that you can get an adapter to use other brands of lenses. Can you find an adapter to use Nikon Lensses? Important to me.
