Complete our survey for the chance to win an iPad 2

By dpreview staff on Nov 21, 2011 at 20:13 GMT

US photographic trade body PMA and dpreview.com are conducting a survey looking for the views of dedicated amateur photographers. The ten minute survey asks about your photographic use, the features you'd like to see in cameras and your use and experience of photo sharing sites and printing services (as well as helping us make dpreview a better place). It aims to get a clearer understanding of what committed non-professional photographers want from their cameras and related services and may even result in those things getting a bit better. Responses will be discussed at the forthcoming 6Sight conference. As a reward one lucky respondent will be sent a shiny new Apple iPad 2.

I personally would like to see the issue of "noise" levels with digital cameras be addressed since it can be a drawback in a lot of instances. Thank You. capelyons

I agree with Isabel Cutler and anyway there's nothing preventing the submission of any old rubbish just to complete the form for a very slim chance of winning the prize.

A waste of everyone's time imho.

Some of the questions were very difficult to answer and my estimates were guesses based on the necessity to fill in the blanks, e.g. how much is my equipment worth, how many pictures do I have on my computer, how many do I have online. There were similar questions that were difficult to answer without several hours of research.

There should be one more option asking about earning money from photography. I don't get cash explicitly from taking photos, however, photography supports me in my job. I can't make the direct connection but I believe that I have more job security and have earned bonuses because of the added value I provide through the use of photography. Hard to put a dollar value on that.

I stopped filling in the survey after the fifth or sixth or was it the tenth page. Too long, the questions making no sense with regard to my wishes and wants, the carrot (ipad) too far away with too much in between.
You need to throw in some questions of more interests at an earlier stage - if there exist some at all?
May be I have an unique situation, because as a NEX owner an ipad does not make any sense at all for taking pictures.
kindest greetings

I don't have the time to fill the survey (and I already have an iPad2) so I answer here: I want much more in-depth camera and lens (e.g., the Sony 16-50/2.8) reviews! S100 etc.

The survey is too long for you guys to fill out? Great! Better chance of me winning that ipad, then. :-)

I thought it was an interesting survey, but it did need a different choice in one of the fields - for example: 'Do you even own a phone with a camera?'

A bit nervous about clicking on a choice for "How much have you spent?" I would have liked a "N.O.Y.B." option (none of your business)

I have just filled in the questionnaire. Interesting exercise. But since you - DPReview - didn't ask, I will bring a comment here.
After several years I still appreciate my daily visits to your site. But I think there is too much now. Too many different things that are not strictly relevant.
I liked it better when it was just news about cameras and lenses. However, the lens reviews are excellent!

They seem to be oriented on Americans because of a number of store chains they mentioned like Walmart etc. And they were interested whether and how you use some kind of a mobile device.

I wish I would win an iPad )))

OK, done. Now I wish myself good luck after all this trouble. It took much more then the promised 10 minutes... On the other hand, I am very picky about answers and always want to read everything before I sign something which is why I almost never bother to participate in surveys. Anyway, now I have done it.

Im a little dissapointed that the q/a was asking information that feels so besides the fundamental issues we are interested in. Most of us seem to be more interested in expressing specific requirements about our cameras, questions and requirments we feel deserve more attention than "Do you own a DSLR and did it make you more enthusiastic about taking pictures"?

What about important questions like improvments for DSLR features, or even more important, what do people want to see from the Mirrorless generation?

Your survey description lists these important questions first, but fails to enter into a level of detail that warrants it being mentioned at all. I hope I eanred you some good money for participating, after all this is just market research NOT photographic feedback.

I liked this one:

A: "You bet I do" :)

Re: assumed mobile phone, damn annoying of the survey people. I entered something so I could continue with the survey - not throw away my time spent to that point.

Survey makers should learn when to use a checkbox vs. radio buttons. Ugh.

I don't think there was a place for me to say what features are most interesting, useful to me, e.g. fully-articulated screen, GPS, long battery life, etc.

Anyway, *way* too long a survey.

(Nit-pick: they use "Press" for buttons instead of Click/Tap.)

There are some things surveys cannot capture. If you (DPR) put in a question: "What two things would you like to see on your camera," you'd get a big wish list and nobody would complain about the length of the survey.
Oh, I want nifty automatically closing/opening caps for the big lenses just as compact have (show me what you can do in 3D). Also get a cooled sensor going with better sensitivity and lower noise.
Cheers,

Before I had a Nikon FM2 with lenses. Very good but too heavy.
In 2006 I bought a FujiF30, very good to start with. Beautifull images also in low light conditions, good battery.
A year ago I purchased a panasonic LX5, very good but not that pleasant to use.
In march I received an Olympus XZ1, a very good camera because of the fast lens and the intelligent menu, very good results but limited in low light conditions. In low light, the Fuji F30 (2006) was much better.

I pre-ordered a Fuji X10 even if there are cons: Why Fuji did not use a bigger battery with inside charger? Why Fuji did not make a more friendly and intelligent photographers menu and handling, as for example an easy manual focusing a.s.o. Why this stupid lens cap without a strap, I will loose it soon. It seems, they did not read the dpreview comments concerning the f100 cons.
I can still cancel the order if dpreview comes quickly with a complete test.
When?
