Planned site maintenance on dpreview.com

By dpreview staff on Nov 19, 2011 at 00:56 GMT

Planned site maintenance will mean the site will be temporarily unavailable for a period today (Saturday November 19th). For around an hour from 20:00 GMT / 15:00 ET / 12:00 PT, it will not be possible to log into the site. This will mean commenting, forums and challenges will be read-only during this period. A banner across the top of the page will make clear when this work is in progress and we hope to bring an improved user experience as a result of the work. We appreciate your patience.

Update 15:44 PT: We've completed the necessary maintenance, and site functionality has been restored. However, due to the inherent latency in DNS (Domain Name System) propagation, a very small percentage of users may be unable to post to our forums for the next 24-48 hours. If these issues persist, or if you continue to experience performance or functionality problems with other areas of the site, please feel free to send feedback via the link at the bottom of this page.

I hate to say it, dpreview, but what you play with us last days is trial-error game. this time post on 3rd trial :-( :-( :-( I am not saying my post is that important, but it is annoying, anyway.

Is there an error with the forum RSS-feed? I get a new item now every time a message is posted (instead of only when a thread is created as before). I hope that is not meant to be a new feature.

I can't believe it. Now for sure I though the "Threads started by users on your ignore list" header would be fixed, i.e. _inside_ the forums table even if you make the browser window bigger. It seems like such an easy thing to fix, yet it's been that way for months.

I alerted them to this bug at least twice but they do not seem to be interested in fixing it.

We can all live with an hour or so, when the end result will be better for all of us. Maybe we should all go shoot a photo during that time.

This is a large, complex site that treats user experience seriously. Some of the newer innovations I don't care for a whole lot, but what I do care for is that there /are/ innovations. The site keeps changing and keeps staying the same too. Who could complain? I look forward this change and future changes.

I hope it will improve the site reliability/stability. In the last couple of weeks, I've seen several occurrences of pages on the site getting stalled / partially loading etc...

No change there then. For a top 100 site, you must have one of the worst reliability records. I hope your planned maintenance finally fixes these issues, because deep down, I still love you!

@Najinsky You said DP Review has one of the worst reliability record. Do you have the data to support your statement?

@Barney. You're quite right, I just checked your developer advert again and it says top 1000 not top 100, I mis-remembered, sorry about that. If it's any consolation, your in my top 100. I'd even go as far as to say you are in my top 10!

@andywhoa and seagull.

Of 8 tabs in my browser that I load daily, DPR has the most problems by a long way.

I browse here daily, often many times a day, so perhaps I see more issues than you guys.

Here are 6 recent issues off the top of my head:

"We've reached our limit, please try again later" - This happened a lot on Thursday (I think)

The News sidebar widget failed to update for about a week.

Comments shown under my comments were completely messed up for a few days. They showed other peoples comments from threads I wasn't involved in.

Time and date of recent postings were messed up for almost a week after the upgrade.

Clicking recent posts jumped to the wrong forums

When travelling in Aisa with restricted bandwidth, DPR was the only site from my 8 tabs that failed to load - its programming doesn't seem to handle low bandwidth issues too well.

If you guys didn't experience any of these issues, lucky for you. I did, so I see no problem commenting about it.

I use Safari 5.1.1 on OS X 10.7.2 now, but some of the errors were before I upgraded from OS X 10.6.7. I posted in several threads about the issues and wasn't alone, for example this one in the news forum:

We've reviewed 36 cameras this year so far, and we've got more on the way before the end of 2011. If you include detailed previews, and reviews of other products, this figure is much higher.

Maybe you're just not paying attention?

Barney, for the record, have lens' reviews been abandoned?

Absolutely not, no. We had to put lens reviews on hiatus after relocating our studio from London to Seattle but we're gearing up to start again in 2012. I can't say exactly when (it's not as complicated as just throwing a switch from 'off' to 'on') but don't worry :)

If you check through the forums (e.g. Sony SLR) you will find that some posts containing punctuation such as quotation marks or apostrophes are not rendered correctly i.e. the symbols and what may follow the symbols are registered as gobbledegook. This happens notably if one drafts the post in MS Word then posts it into the DPRev system.
