Sony has released firmware v1.03 for its SLT-A77 and A65 cameras. Currently only available via the company's Asia site (the first region in which the cameras are widely available), the upgrade promises to improve the responsiveness of the control dials and function buttons, along with the speed of switching between EVF and LCD modes. It also adds support for the HVL-MT24AM macro flash accessory.

I'm from Greece. I have all models of 7* from minolta times, a Konica-Minolta Dynax 7, and a Sony A700 too. Now I just bought Sony A77. It's firmware is version 1.04. I did some tests in very difficult situations and believe it or not is an an amazing tool. ISO starts for 50 to 16000. I working very much with macro. With Sony A700 I was taking excelent pictures with iso 3200 and 6400. All the secret has to do with the way of the light on the subject. When I'll go out and take some photos I'll post them. The only thing I'm complaining about is that you can do everything with effects until Extra Fine mode. In Raw or Raw+JPG mode you can't use any effect. I hope they 'll give us that posibility maybe with a new firmware udate.

Through a serendipitous fluke, I was able to acquire a brand new USA retail packaged model Sony A-77 last night in NYC. It came with the v1.03 software update preinstalled. It is amazing, responsive, the glass is crazy sharp, and the software has this camera doing everything fast and like it should. No lage when switching between the eye finder and the screen. Seemingly noise free at 1600 iso. I'm a very happy camper. I can also affirm that Lightrrom has an update to handle the A77's raw files and it works flawlessly. Can't wait to shoot bands at CMJ in NYC with it tonight.

I don’t understand why Sony isn’t listening to the consumers?

DSLR users don’t want more pixels. They also don’t want video, a 1000 p/s frame rate and huge files. What they want is less noise, a larger dynamic range, a fast responding camera, long battery life and accurate auto-focus.
They just want to take sharp and well exposed dynamic pictures with a durable camera.

I'm sure that the noise issue will be addressed. They addressed it in the A-700.

I guess this means that there is/was nothing that they can do about the noise....? What a shame.

Better early than never. But will units sold in N. America have the firmware pre-installed? Or might they come with an advice?

Anyway, since the firmware does not address the high ISO noise issue, that must prove it did not bother Asian customers any, and so must not matter. Right?

@Barney, why not confirm it that there is no difference?

Any plans to update studio shots to 1.03 when full review is posted?

the review is in the final stages of production but the new firmware has no impact upon image quality (this information direct from Sony) and as a consequence we have no plans to update the studio work at present.

Hopefully, Barney, you have done your own testing to verify there is no difference :)

Interesting comment from Sony, because the detail in the reds does look improved compared to the older V1.02 used by Imaging Resource.

I'm wery interested in the video quality of the a77 and a65 (low light) in comparison to Canon 7d or 600d whit the same cmos.

Barney, I've handled the A77 and the EVF looked like a big problem; the switching time (LCD/EVF) was horrendous, so I've simply set the camera to switch only on command (from the dedicated button, and *not* automatically). But even with capture review/display turned off, the EVF (and the LCD too) still had a brief but annoying pause in the live feed; that really disqualified the camera from any action photography. I was interested in this for airshows; I really hope that DPreview will test a bit more the focus too, 'cause that's what's sorely lacking here. Yes, the reviews are fine if the readers appreciate pixel-peeping and a friendlier description than the one in the manual, but I'd like to see an expanded view of the actual camera usage.

It's probably too late to request specific tests, but the one test I'd be most interested to see is a series of shots taken continues drive and AF-C of runner approaching the camera. The SLT design should smoke DSLRs (let alone mirrorless cameras) in this kind of test, but does it in practice?

imaging-resource was using version 0.58 before they switched to 1.03.
