Sigma Germany announces SD1 Wood Edition with burl veneer

By dpreview staff on Oct 12, 2011 at 17:57 GMT

Sigma Germany has announced a wood-veneered version of its SD1 high-end DSLR. The 'Wood Edition' emphasizes the camera's premium appeal by adding a casing made from Amboyna Burl, an expensive and decorative veneer taken from complex growths on a Southeast Asian tree. The case takes around 60 hours to cut, mill and polish. Ten examples of the special edition will be available, body-only, for a recommended selling price of €9,999. (From PhotoScala)

This looks a little goofy with the black - they should have added bushed steel case as well - that would be beautiful. The veneer is too thick - how are you supposed to press the buttons on the back? With a sharpened pencil?

I wish they had produced some good cameras that all could buy and enjoy than pulling such quixotic stunts.

That's nuts. It doesn't make an overly expensive camera any better.

Yes, it does. That's why Rolls Royce cars come with burl wood dash inserts and steering wheels. That's why Weatherby rifles come with burl wood stocks. That's why just about any expensive or over-priced product often comes with a "burl wood finish" or some other "enhanced" finish. Duh.

A pig?! I'll give you that the camera isn't very practical due to it's proprietary mount and lack of accessories, ect., but the technology behind it is simply second to none.

I know pig is a little harsh, but it is just an english expression. But when you consider the price, the camera is a joke.

If it was made by Geppeto, Sigma's nose would grow every time they talked about how many megapixels the camera has...

edit... obviously everyone else had the same thoughts and I'm the slowest typer... LOL

When you consider the price the camera is a joke? So it's a joke that is captures images at the same frame rate, with a higher dynamic range and more detail than a Nikon D3x or a Canon EOS 1Ds for less money? How about the fact that it does all that with a 1.5 crop sensor? There is NO other camera that comes close to this camera's capabilities . . . for ANY price. The SD1 is the closest thing to medium format that you can get, but it has a wide range of high-quality, low-price lens choices, and it shoots as fast as the top-of-the-line cameras made by the big three manufacturers. I'd say that is an amazing accomplishment, and you say it is a pig and not worth the money. You're mistaken, as most people seem to be mistaken. It is those with money or those in the know, who will buy the SD1. We will see how many that is, but I congratulate Sigma on their achievement. I'm glad they have made the SD1, and I plan to get one.
