Sigma Germany has announced a wood-veneered version of its SD1 high-end DSLR. The 'Wood Edition' emphasizes the camera's premium appeal by adding a casing made from Amboyna Burl, an expensive and decorative veneer taken from complex growths on a Southeast Asian tree. The case takes around 60 hours to cut, mill and polish. Ten examples of the special edition will be available, body-only, for a recommended selling price of €9,999. (From PhotoScala)

gross. it looks like some hard, uncomfortable half case. not to mention i'm sure the wood would be uncomfortable to hold for longer periods of time. the quality should be good though- the amboyna burl is very dense and strong.

but still.....how many of these do they expect to sell? i don't see the logic behind going through the trouble to produce this.

there is no news like SD1 news . For once there is a company and a camera that align itself with Leica and its prices.
Why not go the next mile, make the SD1 supports Leica M-mount before putting a price on the camera and accessory. That would suddenly makes the camera price more acceptable.
As of now, SD1 only supports SA mount. No offense, i have sigma gears too but the impression is that we buy sigma lens because we didn't want to pay premium in the first place.
So, Lets see those M-mount on the revolutionary X3 sensor.

OMG ... is that what they think it will take to sell the SD1? This is about as transparent a gimmick as I have ever seen in the photography world. Think Netflix has gone bonkers? Move over, Netflix! There's now a company making many more mistakes than you ever will!

Would have been nice if they'd make the actual outer body out of wood, but this just doesn't make sense. This isn't how special editions work. This is just the same camera with a accessory.

10000 euros for a wooden camera. LOL . What person would by this ? You probably only use it for night photography when no one can see you ugly gadget.

If a company needs gimmicks to sell a product, then they have failed to capture the market because they failed to understand the market. Sigma has clearly lost touch with the market, and this gimmick does not inspire confidence.

Hmm Amboyna Burl..."Southeast Asian tree".... better not be old growth forest, but then again plantation pine would'nt give quite the same effect

It's beautiful...but finding a way to produce a more expensive version of the SD1 does make me snicker a little. Sort of seems like a "Netflix" type move. Release a camera at a price that causes an uproar and then produce a limited edition version that's even more expensive. :-)

for 9.99 it better be leather or some other kind of decorated textile.

next one would be Titanium, wait, that has been done before.
give it a break, will ya, SD1 and Leica M9 have similar pricing, at least from my region here. so releasing some luxury accessories for it should be acceptable no?

I cannot imagine trying to hold this camera with this slippery wooden case. Not to mention how much "thicker" the camera is and must be uncomfortable to hold.

If I ever thought of a list of why not to buy an SD1, this must be the first item - clearly they try to appeal to those who buy things only because they are overpriced,

This is a shame, because the concept of the Foveon sensor is that much better than that of conventional Bayer color matrix.

I think it's pretty neat from a craftsmanship perspective, despite being fairly useless. If you look closely it's a half case and not the actual camera body.

It's just a shame they chose to make it for this particular camera.

I don't think any of you has understood what's really going on here.

Sigma finally has found the reason why the SD1 isn't going too well – it was too cheap!

So now they decided to make an exclusive 'wood edition' for € 9,999, and, as PhotoScala reports, make only 10 of them, too, instead of the approximately 15 cheap standard models sold so far, so people will be breaking their doors to get hold of one.

Can we buy add on excessories like curb feelers, naked mud flap girl lens cap and a lens hood ornament? My guess is this was an idea of one of the execs while stuck in traffic looking at his dash of a fancy car and then pushed to production with zero market research because you know execs can't be wrong.

Come on, surely they have misplaced the coma in the price. It must be 9.999 $ and selling in toy stores...wait: 100%discount for the approaching Christmas so don't rush to buy now...

Honestly, this is pure mock up of stupidity.

when Pentax came up with their wine red 645D i thought it was quite a beauty. As usual, Sigma has no class, this looks as tacky as a seventies table in kidney shape. Of course even bad advertising is better than no advertizing and if you dont even have a product to sell, this might have been really needed.
