Sigma Germany announces SD1 Wood Edition with burl veneer

Sigma Germany has announced a wood-veneered version of its SD1 high-end DSLR. The 'Wood Edition' emphasizes the camera's premium appeal by adding a casing made from Amboyna Burl, an expensive and decorative veneer taken from complex growths on a Southeast Asian tree. The case takes around 60 hours to cut, mill and polish. Ten examples of the special edition will be available, body-only, for a recommended selling price of €9,999. (From PhotoScala)

The worst-looking special edition camera since the Ricoh GR Digital anniversary edition, beating the "korejanairobo" Pentax K-x for second place. Congratulations!

I've never met a hunter that would carry furniture polish around with his/her rifle, and many of the most expensive rifles and shotguns have burl wood stocks (grips). BTW, those long guns make the SD1 seem like an inexpensive toy. (Try $15,000 to $250,000.)

Now WHERE can I order this special edition SD1? 9999 EU amounts to only 14 000 US$ ;-)) and gives me one of ten Special Edition SD1 - maybe worth a fortune one day,: "Wood edition of 'The Camera that Never Made it!"
It would also fit perfectly on the passengers seat of my Porsche Cayenne matching the burled walnut in the surrounding ( I had to buy the Porsche Cayenne on recommendation of Ken Rockwell reading an essay about a Contax G2 ;-), and in addition to my ROLEX and the MIELE kitchen at home, I really could impress my new girl friend! But wait – who will make photos that even scratch the potential of this SD1 wonder? I can’t – I only can drive Cayenne!
If anyone wants to bet about the success of this DP1, woody or for common people, I am in. The DP1 will not make it under this SIGMA Management

What of a "sustainable plantatioins" that cuts down but one exotic, slow-growing hardwood tree per year, yet somehow sells board length equal to at least 100? Have ye faith in such miracles? It's called "wink, wink."

Doesn't even look good: just a wood cover slapped on top of the plastic body. What would be more impressive is a fully integrated wood veneer. Or even better, how about, uh, an all metal dslr???

If someone loves this thing, he could and should buy it. We could argue about taste without end.

And hey, not long ago everybody asked who needs des Pentax Q (okay, it's not that expensive)... And now? There are no more discussions about this camera but a lot of sample pics and some good reviews.

So don't judge the camera from its appearance...

Richard Murdey
By Richard Murdey (Oct 13, 2011)

Actually the Q was pretty much dismissed as a fun little toy. The image quality is no better than it's size suggests, but the camera is well put together and has its charms.

The SD1 is priced based on "only ten people are going to buy this so we better milk them for every cent!" philosophy. No rational conversation can be had about value, and wrapping it in a wood case and adding another $2,500 or so to the price isn't going to change the discussion at all. Those 10 people will still buy it, the rest of us not, but Sigma managed to eek out an extra $20k profit.

Did you take your images from the PhotoScala site? On their site the colour looks a lot redder. My browser is colour managed so I guess only one of you (DPR or PhotoScala) is passing on the embedded profile (or tag) when presenting the images. Either way it looks hideously unpractical.

(Do I get a point for turning this back from comedy to photography?)

Hey, it's Sigma Germany - so it's not PC to use an Asian type of wood and it shows. Now if they had made it from German Oak then... it would probably look as ghastly but it would be the must have accessory for those Germans that go to Belgium to buy Oak furniture at discount prices.

How hilarious! Nobody's buying the plain version, so why should they risk derision in the streets wandering around with this monstrosity? I think Sigma lost a few brain cells when they conjured up the SD1, and now they've lost the rest. Frankly it looks like a sort of cheap plastic overcoat you might get at the market on a Saturday morning.

I like to look for the positive in new/unusual/risky ideas, because it is too easy to criticize and shoot an idea down just for sport. Just look at the early critiques and opinions on the iPad.
But this has tested my resolve beyond endurance! It reminds me of those ghastly stick on kits for car dashboards. It paradoxically makes real wood look like plastic imitation wood. It is a functional disaster also, encasing a grippy, robust and durable exterior with a slippery, sweaty and fragile covering.
So it is neither use nor ornament. Worse, it insults both.

Pity that a reputable manufacturer of photographic equipment has sunken to this level! Have they become bored?

In my humble opinion, photography is something that appeals to a certain type of individual who has a strong sense of nostalgia. I love the look of a camera, and the PEN's, X100's, Q-series, etc. embody that spirit of nostalgia for me. Of course, I don't care much for pink, purple, blue, etc. camera bodies (only silver & black), but that doesn't come close to this abomination! If it cost only 0.1% of the price quoted above, I still wouldn't touch it with a barge pole!
