Just Posted: Studio comparison shots from the Panasonic DMC-FZ150 superzoom. We've had a DMC-FZ150 in our studio for a few days now and, as promised, have shot our standard test scene with it. The FZ150 replaces the FZ100 and incorporates a lower-resolution 12MP CMOS sensor that the company says will outperform its predecessor's 14MP chip. Like the FZ100 the FZ150 records Raw images, which we've also included in our studio comparison tool.

Focus issue with latest studio scene? Seems the closest objects are a bit soft and the background Kodak card very sharp. The sx230 sample is the opposite with the Kodak card soft and the closer objects sharp. The objects in the sx230 sample are also larger with the top of the Martini bottle being a +/-4% larger than in the fz150 shot.

A bit picky maybe, but not sure I trust this comparison. Definately better edge sharpness for the fz150 when compared to the sx230 (no surprise, but meaningful)

Good overall performance, IMO. I wish the Panasonic FZ0 and Fuji S4000 were among the cameras available for comparison.

And I thing Panasonic made a step in the right direction. The IQ is alot better than the FZ100. I was not impressed with the FZ100 at all. I had bought the FZ35/38 for a friend and its output was way better then the FZ100. Its good to see how manufacturers slowly realise that at least in this segment the customer is not kompletely without knowledge. The Fuji 550 EXR is for me the best (worst)example of a camera that has alot of bells and whistles but just can not take decent pictures at all. So, thank you Panasonic!

jaykumarr, are you confusing SX230 with other cameras? SX30? That would explain your earlier comment about Canon having more zoom. But SX30 still isn't 2 years old so maybe SX20 also? That one premiered in 2009. SX230 is not SX30 neither SX20. Guessing from your statements about its IQ you are looking at SX230 sample in the comparison tool.

Well it's due to Canon's Jpeg, it always was fair with all details without advantaging ones to others but it's always loosing some contrast and saturation and overall sharpness but keeping maximum of details when Panasonic ans Sony have the opposite approach that's why at 100% magnification canon looks better but at web size it's Panasonic or Sony who wins, go to compact super zooms review and check all samples at web size and 100% and you will see that

I'm totally agree with ARTASHES. I've owned SX220 HS and I've sold it. It has terrible trend to use the highest appropriate ISO. It offen rise ISO in bright light conditions up to 400-800 while Panasonic use ISO 80... SX220/230 has focus issues. The Auto mode is absolutely useless. If you read Canon talk forum you will see that owners of the Canon SX220/230 more frequently are complainig than showing off their results.

in RAW its about 1.5 stop better than FZ100 and catch up with the G12 at 1600 iso with slightly advantage to G12 at 1600 and to FZ150 at 3200 iso

I don't purchase cameras for ISO1600 and ISO3200.

for any iso less than 800 SX230 is better, cleaner despite 12x etc zoom

Well I do but who cares? my point was that the FZ150's sensor is a big step forward compared to one on FZ100, and I can't get the point of your phrase "cleaner despite 12x etc zoom" cause FZ150 is 24x zoom camera while the SX230 is 14x so no maths gives me the number 12, maybe its true that you talking about other camera ?

I must say, the comparison, again at ISO 400, with my "old" FZ35 gives the edge again to the FZ35, though not in every area. The image of the date in the watch looks better with the 150; a lot of other areas look better with the 35.

IMO, the Canon SX230 images in this studio scene knock the socks off the Panny camera at ISO 400. I didn't look at any higher ISO because I wouldn't buy either camera with the intention of shooting at over ISO 400.

Maybe so, but the FZ150 has RAW which knocks the socks off the Canon sx230 which does not have RAW. The RAW is much better than the JPG on the GZ150, maybe the noise removal setting is rather high as default.

I agree that SX230 resolves more detail. But you are wrong about zoom, it is FZ150 that has much more (24x vs 14x for Canon).

The only canon's camera with more zoom than FZ150 is THE SX30 35x zoom camera, and even if that is the camera you talking about, you are wrong cause 35-24=11 and SX30 have 24mm wide-angle when fz150 is 25mm so sx30 loosing 35mm at full zoom, conclusion in real life sx30 have only 9,6x extra-zoom than fz150

Don't always confuse fewer pixels as the reason for having clearer pictures, newer image sensors help moreso than pixel size.

I guess you mean better technology, newer sensors not necessarily means better IQ. Sometimes technology stagnates for a while it is not always linear.

When comparing, be aware that you are looking at 100% crops! So, comparing 12 mp to 16 mp you are looking at a substantial difference. Per pixellevel comparisons are only that. Only for pixelpeeping. When printed or displayed at real life sizes that's the "true" quality. I printed some files large and watched a lot of them on HD plasma the winner is... look for yourself! HX100/FZ150?

Not surprisingly cameras leap frogged each other. Although I returned my SX230 HS, if the CHDK hack had been completed for the firmware of that particular unit I would of kept it. I didn't see the pictures suffer for higher auto iso in bright light. And in lower light, for me working inside documenting the evolution of mechanical invention it was refeshing to have usable images in lower light.

Seems to me the FZ150's considerable zoom or its video performance would make it the best compromise and benefit balance for a lot of us.

I will buy it, try it, and enjoy it, but in the end it will have to be worth every penny of the $700 with the more expensive intervalometer and their hot-shoe microphone, and color every bit as good as Canon. And that just might be too much to ask. Hope I am wrong and if I am someone will end up with a very well treated open boxed FZ150 respected but refuted. Either way no fools errand on my part, there is a lot of thoughtful kit in this gizmo.
