We've been using a pre-production Panasonic DMC-FZ150 superzoom for a couple of days and have put together a previews samples gallery from the camera. We've selected a 39-image samples gallery shot in a variety of situations and at variety of ISO settings, to give a taste of how this latest 12MP MOS sensor performs. We've also uploaded three videos shot in the camera's 1080p60 Full HD mode. As always, as well as being able to view the images and videos, you can download the full-size originals.

Samples gallery

There are 39 images in the samples gallery. Please do not reproduce any of these images on a website or any newsletter / magazine without prior permission (see our copyright page). We make the originals available for private users to download to their own machines for personal examination or printing (in conjunction with this review), we do so in good faith, please don't abuse it.

Unless otherwise noted images taken with no particular settings at full resolution. Because our review images are now hosted on the 'galleries' section of dpreview.com, you can enjoy all of the new galleries functionality when browsing these samples.

Would it be possible to post a side-by-side comparison review of the Panasonic FZ150 camera and the Nikon P7100 camera? In theory, they are designed for somewhat different users, but I think they are direct competitors. I am considering getting one of them and would like to read a head-to-head comparison.

There seems to be a discrepancy in the video files. Every app that I can use to open them all say the files are 29.97fps.
Also interlacing can clearly be seen on the thumbnails on the videos. For example a 60p image would not show the double, interlaced blobs of water that can be seen in the fountain video, or the doubled tips on the drumstick.

New videos? Re-label them correctly?

In any event these videos aren't very good IMO. There seems to be a lot of compression artifacts along with the interlacing. Any info on what bitrate was used when recording? any info on what firmware version? Does the v1.0 firmware improve the video quality?

Having said all that I still think this a very nice camera. Do want.

Massive noise reduction (and blur) even at ISO 100 to say nothing about ISO 3200. They could just use 6 MP and then upscale photos.

Sorry, but I would like to ask, which picture taken at ISO100 was the one you looked at.
This is not the DSLR forum.. this is a P&S camera with "special" feature and zoom..
I think many at DP, compare a P&S to DSLR quality and keeop bashing whatever camera is not a Nikon or Canon to thousands of dollars.
If you do not like P&S, please do not comment with such "non objective" remarks.

the videos taken by dpreview are frustrating. none of the videos are intended to show how the camera handles when pointed to light from shadow or from short focus to tele focus or heavy zoom.

Hey Jay, in the drumming video and guitarist video we do some zooming, and the drummer video is taken from a shadowed area pointed at mixed lighting. Additionally, the guitarist is in mixed ambient/dayight lighting, with strong highlights in the background. Nonetheless, the goal with any of the videos is to show a range of situations, so please feel free to recommend more scenarios you'd like to see and we can try to work them in.

It would be interesting to see how it performs in low light or twilight. It´s often a weak point in P&S movie mode and the FZ100 delivered quite dismal vids when the light was a little bit dimmer than a clean sky with only a few clouds.

Photo quality is good if not amazing. Given Sony's HX100V at $400.00, Panasonic's price is not impressed at all. Will buy it when price drops to below $300, which is my best offer.

I'm impressed. A bit of softness here and there that I could do without, but this camera is doing a lot of things exactly right. Of course, for its hefty $500 list price, it should.

BTW, as someone with an ongoing crush on Seattle, I especially enjoyed these images.

the ISO 1600 samples are full of noise and the few details evident are smeared. There hasn't been a Panasonic yet that can produce a decent photo at anything above base ISO without extensive noise reduction and other Photoshop work. No progress seems to have been made on this front for years.

This is not a DSLR so stop thinking you are every going to get the performance you are wanting from a P&S

Neither is the Canon SX20 but it does way better at comparable ISO.
Hell, if you look at the sample images of the boat, there's noticeable ISO noise even at ISO 100. Very apparent in the shadow areas.

Also, this ISO issue also exists with the Panasonic DSLRs. Just take a look at the review images of the GH2 for example.

well, pixel colorado, it's hardly too much to ask to have decent photo quality for the price asked for this camera, whether it be a DSLR or P&S. I'm sure the folks at Panasonic hope everyone contemplating a purchase of this camera have the same attitude you do.

i think you are confused. the performance at 1600 is superb. have you seen iso400/800 in FZ50? this is several times better.

If we need "clean" iso600 photo, we must go for bigger than 3/4ths size sensor.

This tiny sensor has noise, extreme noise at iso1600. Panasonic has done very good job of reducing it, removing it partially. But whatever they do, they won't be able to fix all noise in all colors (especially in dark greyish colors). Remember panasonic does mere fix. by nature, the sensor is noisy.

what the hell is with all this oblivious commenting? so now we're comparing performance with a camera released in 2006 and trying to justify it being better? seriously man... well on the flip side, when we start to see things like this it really helps tells the case of how bad the FZ150, and to a good extent, how bad most of its other camera's high ISO performance is.

Not me. Detail is lost, especially similar colors like foliage, and the dark reddish building behind the boat in image number 2.

As for what I expect, I use an LX5 with RAW and Sillypix. I expect much better from a bad shot than I see here. OK< I have tweaked the NR, gamma, etc, on the LX5, but still...
