Match Technical launches Thumbs Up EP-5S thumb rest for Fujifilm X100

Chinese accessory maker Match Technical has introduced a version of its 'Thumbs Up' accessory grip for the Fujifilm X100. The Thumbs Up EP-5S is an updated version of the grip we featured in our Leica M9 preview, and slots into the camera's hot shoe. It features a revised, 'ergonomic profile' thumb rest, includes a silicone insert to cushion the join between the grip and the camera, and is available in either black or silver. (via DCWatch)

I've had this camera for two months now. Never felt the need for an accessory like this. I use something called a left hand.

I don't get it. The camera is so poorly designed from an ergonomics standpoint that you have to spend an additional $118 (or $200) and sacrifice your hot shoe to make it stable and comfortable to use?

Then why buy the camera in the first place?

Well then, ... talk. Why is it worth it paying upwards of $200 for a fifteen-cent piece of steel that negates your ability to use flash, to fix what appears to be a design flaw in a $1,200 camera?

Post should have mentioned the (slighter more expensive $144) CSEP-2 http://matchtechnical.com/CSEP2.aspx
It DOESN'T sacrifice the hot shoe. In the end it's all a matter of individual comfort, every hand/grip is different, doesn't imply the X100 NEEDS this accessory, nor any of the other camera's (Leica's) these are designed for. Are you implying a $7000 Leica is poorly designed as well if people are using these on them?

Personally I would have to weigh giving up rear-access to the shutter dial (or perhaps more important that this better prevents accidental movement?). I'm more keen on the Boop, Beep, Bip, Bug accoutrement!

i ahve one for my M8.2 and find usefull but for that price i would not buy a Fuji X-100 just to ge that.
I also have the boop for the shutter release, But to think again no i would not buy another one.

Just high light the Fuji bad design - how about a small button lock or lift and turn similar to the Nikon design of yesteryear - no more accident.

With that money I would want a unit with built-in replicate of the hot shoe with all the necessary electrical and mechanical contacts, not just piece of metal easily lost if you have to remove it to use the flash.

I had one for my Ill-fated Lica M8 and loved it. Wish like hell I didn't sell the M8 but I hated the company owner. Anyway, this is nice and if i can find an X100 I'll likely buy this device if the price is reasonable. There is no way I'd pay 200 for it.

Sorry MT - not at $200. The leica one was already too expensive, and the price was raised. I'd love to have one, sure.. but not at 1/6 the price of the camera.

I predict they will sell a few, however, nowhere near as many as if they had priced it according to the actual market.. which is not Leica.

My mistake, they are $118 - which is a lot less than $200, but imho they need to break the $100 mark - and I will never do business with pop flash again anyway.

Well I hope that continues for you... For me there are too many vendors out there that get customer service right to go back to pop flash--I had a really bad experience related to an error that they made. I love the guys at Dale photo for personal service and of course b&h, adorama, even amazon for that matter just gets it right on managing logistics and orders...

This is from a Japanese manufacturer. Sale starts on Aug 4. The MSRP is whopping $200. What a rip-off. Seems like the company is taking advantage of the X100 user's enthusiasm.

I want one. I'm constantly accidentally turning the mode/shutter speed wheel. This should prevent that.

I suppose it would work with ANY camera that has a hot shoe, since they are all he same standard size. How well it would work depends on whether the thumb rest ends up in a good position for you on a different camera.

I think it would work fine on my EP1, based on the overall dimensions and the position of the hot shoe.

But, do yourself a favor and wait three months. Someone in China will copy this simple metal piece, and sell them on ebay for $14.95, with free shipping.

I'm sure the $200 version will be nicer... but... not $185 nicer.

A bit disappointing I was thinking they may lower the grip but now it still blocks the shutter dial completely. Turning with only the index finger, your thumb will put heavy stress on the grip so just hope the hot shoe can withstand. It is expensive consider for the money you pay for that extra grip, which may also achieve by adding a half case. It is not expensive when consider it is a piece of solid brass CNC and hard coatings.
