Color and calibration specialist X-Rite has announced a series of monthly photography competitions. The contests, which require both 'liking' the company on Facebook and 'following' it on Twitter, will be judged by professional photographers and include various X-Rite products as prizes. The slightly ridiculously-named 'Color Perfectionnists Unite' photography contest allows the public to vote for the twenty best images each month, which are then submitted for judging.

Press Release:

X-Rite Announces “Color Perfectionists Unite”
Photography Contest

Photo contest features monthly themes and fantastic prizes

Elmsford, NY – July 20, 2011 X-Rite, Incorporated, the world leader in color management, measurement and communication technologies, announces today the Color Perfectionists Unite Photo Contest. Photographers and anyone passionate about perfecting color is invited to submit original photos based on each monthly theme through the end of 2011.

Monthly winners will be selected by a top professional photographer specializing in the area of photography related to the theme. Each monthly winner will also be featured on the X-Rite Photo blog and will receive one of X-Rite’s new display solutions – either a ColorMunki Display or an i1Display Pro – and a ColorChecker Passport, providing each winner with the ideal tools to get accurate color from their cameras and displays. The top 20 finalists each month will be featured in a monthly gallery at X-Rite Photo on Facebook and Color Perfectionists Group on Flickr.

“Through the ‘Color Perfectionists Unite’ photography contest, X-Rite is on the search for Color Perfectionists from around the world to show us their true colors,” said Mark Rezzonico, vice president X-Rite Photo Marketing. “And with monthly themes ranging from ‘Summer Fun’ and ‘Fall Colors’ to ‘Landscapes’ and ‘Celebrating Family’ we are really looking forward to seeing the images that will be submitted.”

To enter the contest:

  1. Submit an image that represents the theme for that particular month. There is no limit to the number of entries. Enter using “Contest” at X-Rite Photo on Facebook or visit www.xritephoto.com/photocontest .
  2. Follow @xritephoto on Twitter and “Like” X-Rite Photo on Facebook (contestants need to do both to be eligible to win).
  3. Contestants should invite friends and family to vote for their image. The top 20 photos with the most votes each month will be entered in the final round. The finalist images will be featured in a monthly gallery on Facebook and added to the Color Perfectionists Group on Flickr.

While I applaud companies offering prizes for photo comps, I hate that they are using Facebook for votes. The winning images of these comps, quite often end up representing who has the most Facebook friends, rather than the best image. :(

Agreed, Darren. I just upgraded to Lion last night and then discovered my i1 Display 2 with Eye-Match no longer worked because it ran under Rosetta before. They say they're going to have something for us in September, but are clearly looking to force us to toss our still-working hardware and buy new stuff rather than bother fixing the app for a 4-year-old product.

I put 8GB of RAM into my MBP so I could better run Lightroom and now I can't use it at all for photos because I can't compensate for the natural blue color cast of the display. I've basically got a $1200 netbook.

That's the sort of thing that's worth checking *before* you upgrade - OS upgrades always come with some nasty surprises, and I have been left waiting for a long, long time in the past for some thirty-party software to be updated.

Well, a new utility to profile your monitor will be made available by X-Rite in September; for a price. So you can buy new hardware now, wait a month without calibration, or resist upgrading.

The insidious part is that they have apparently (according to the press release) decided to pick and choose which devices it would work with. The Eye-One Display for example, is not supported. Eye-One Display LT and Eye-One Display 2, yes, but not the original Eye-One Display. It's virtually identical, talks the same protocol and still functions perfectly well, but according to their press release, will not be supported and owners will have to buy new hardware, just because X-Rite wouldn't add one more string to the binary to support this device. Fairly typical behaviour for X-Rite.

X-Rite would do better to invest their time fixing their software and addressing the contempt with which they treat their loyal customers.

I believe Darren refers to X-Rite's decision to use Apple's OS-X "Lion" update as a windfall event by refusing to offer a discounted update to their long-in-the-tooth color profiling software. I invested in the whole i1 Professional system several years ago, which was quite expensive ($1,200?) but has been very useful and reliable. But this week I learned that X-Rite has decided that customers like me who want to update to Lion will have to invest another $500+ to buy their new "Publish" software. They're offering no low-cost upgrade. As far as X-Rite is concerned we're new faces.

Needless to say, this discovery has frosted my cake. I'm strongly considering my alternatives.

Right Darren?

Actually no, the comment by Rafael was posted before mine.

And I was referring mostly to their consistent habit of screwing over their customers with egregious EULAs, upgrade policies and habit of discontinuing products, for example the one associated with their new flagship product i1Profiler, which is oppressively restrictive.

This competition is nothing more than a marketing exercise to divert attention away from the bad press they're getting over the launch of that product.

Quote "The contests, which require both 'liking' the company on Facebook and 'following' it on Twitter"

There is a lot of us who have no wish to join facebook or twitter and prevents entry to any competition. Talk about restrictive practises, this is a typical example.
Come on DP review open up competition properly for a change.
