We've just launched a simple commenting system for our news items, previews and galleries, with more sections to follow. At the moment you can only comment if you're a logged-in registered dpreview.com user, but this may change in future versions of the new feature. Feel free to try it out and add your comments to this story!

For challenge entry comments This is a BAD system !!!!

I have made a few comments about some challenge entries using this new system.
Now, I can't remember which images they were.
I would like to go back and see if anyone else commented on these images or my comments.
But ,
I have no way of seeing what I commented on.

So it's just a write and forget system :-(

Very nice feature indeed but it seems it may have a small bug. Tried to log in from this page but after I filled in the email and password fields and clicked the login button it seemed it never sent the info. I tried twice unsuccessfully then went to the the Dpreview homepage and logged in from there without any problem. May be just coincidence or may be that I hadn´t logged in Dpreview for a very long time and my account could be a bit rusty.

Yeeehaw I was able to register despite using a free web based email account :)

I was going to start a campaign complaining about the horrible white text on a black background when I noticed the poll which says that 81.6% of you are morons. Congratulations. There is just 2 765 people siding with me so I guess the site will stay unreadable.

I can't read the black on white either... in fact, it gives me a headache and I can never make it through a news release, nevermind an entire review. It's sad, because I generally enjoy and appreciated drpeview.com content otherwise.

I agree. Somehow I get sooo tired reading the text that I usually fall asleep during a long review. I have noticed that the text is also smaller and blurrier in Safari 4 on Mac which I am using. Even if I zoom in it doesn't get much better.
Maybe they can make a site preference so you can choose if you want white or black text.

There's actually a very good reason to prefer black on white to white on black for a photography-related site. With black on white, the overwhelming color is white, which causes they eye to constrict to prevent overexposure. With white on black, the overall color is black, so the eyes dilate. this causes overexposure by the white text. This overexposure causes afterimages of the text to imprint on the retina. Viewers of photos then see horizontal banding in the photos. If you're tired of the horizontal banding posts, vote pro-choice or for black on white!

And dpreview thought this was a good idea because? Have none of you read the comments after any online news story or Youtube video? Do you really think the comments posted here will be more civilized and intelligent? Spend some time in your own forums and think again! I for one lament this new feature.

I do get kind of tired of having to register for umpteen million web sites in order to make a comment or ask a question. But I'm already registered on dpreview, so for me, the question is moot :-)

It would have been logical to allow the same formatting options as in the forums.
I just tried to add some /italic/ text to a response and finished up with the formatting marks and *NO* italics.
Plus an "edit* or even "withdraw" option would be useful.

Please, do not allow posts from unregistered users. That would just bog down the place. Love the way you develop dpreview, keep up the good work!

I appreciate that dpreview has limits to its resources, but surely it makes more sense to both dpreview and its loyal readers to focus those resources on quality timely equipment reviews rather than social media gimmicks that appear to be solutions looking for problems to many of us?

Firstly, Software Developers don't review equipment. Secondly, you would hopefully concede that we have a lot more data than you do about our site and its visitors, and that no matter how much 'common sense' is telling you that you must be right, we probably do things for a reason.

Some will like it, some not. Just like with the controversial NEX concept/design, but the changes are inevitable, and people will get use to almost anything if properly introduced.
I view dp mainly on the mobile screen so if this gizmodish layout is more *legible and tapable*, comparing to fiddling with spaghetti-sized threads and taping mostly not the ones interesting...
I am glad to see a change!

Can we have this on forum posts? I would even like a dislike button on forum posts. One forum I was on automatically hid a comment if it received too many dislikes.

Suggestion:
Have the comments hidden and with a button to expand if the reader wants to see them......much like the "hide replies" button you currently have.
I for one don't want DPR's good reviews etc overrun with comments........

How can I see, in one glance, if there have been any comments made on any image in a particular challenge ??

The "challenge entry comments" forum has been deleted!!
Do I have to click on each image separately to see if comments have perhaps been placed. If yes, then that is a complete farce!!!

It was a bad idea to remove that forum!!!!!!!!!!

Would have preferred that the R & D time/labour (or is it labor these days?) was spent on Lens Reviews - or is the recent Lensbaby review a sign that things are back on track?

Good idea. There have been news items that I'd rather post a quick comment on or ask a quick question than have to go dig out the appropriate forum. Latest example, a macro lens review that didn't have any real macro shots in the examples. Seemed sort of odd.

My first impression was that a new exif field was being introduced which would allow the original photographer, and nobody later, to add a short comment after taking each photo. Example: "overhead sun, partly cloudy"

I don't know if this feature is important to me personally, but what I really like is that you are always adding new features and moving the site forward, making it better all the time. At this point, overall, it is simply a wonderful resource, both for technical info on virtually any modern camera, as well as a great source of interchange between users. Keep up the great work.

Not a fan of this "feature". It should have thrown a comment into the next slot in a set thread in the News forum instead of leaving it here. Or is this a test run for a revamped forum layout that is more just a big list of comments instead of being able to reply to an individual post?

This seems a bit social networking-esque, especially with the like buttons, but with some dpreview flair. I like it!

I don't know about other people, but maybe something similar could be implemented for the forums? Simply have a comment system (click in the blank box, and the same tools for fonts, formating, etc. will pop up) instead of a message-based thread. I think we can also do away with the subject headings (except for the original post) because most people leave them unchanged anyway (some people leave a reply in the subject heading and then leave the message part blank- that gets confusing sometimes).

Not only does this make it smoother to interact in a thread, but with the use of a like button, threads will seem more active (because I'm sure there are more people reading than is represented by the number of people actually talking).

I also think there should be a dislike button- maybe that will get a little ugly/negative on some heated threads, but mostly just informative
