Canon develops EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender1.4x

CP+ 2011: Canon has announced it is developing the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x lens, which features a built-in switchable 1.4x teleconverter. With the converter engaged, it becomes a 280-560mm F5.6 lens. Designed for sports and wildlife photographers the lens will feature weatherproof construction and is scheduled for launch later this year.

Canon announces development of a new telephoto zoom lens with an integrated extender

London, UK, 7th February 2011 – Canon today announces the development of a telephoto zoom lens featuring an integrated focal length extender – the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM EXTENDER 1.4x. The lens will be displayed for the first time during CP+, held in Yokohama, Japan.

Here it is! WOW! What a lens! I wonder why Canon took so long to decide on building this lens! Too bad it's still not available. Great lens, great performance, great size. The built in 1.4x converter is the ice on top of the cake!

Any idea when it is going to be launched. In February they said later this year... how late!!!

It's still uncertain, the tsunami delayed the launch of all the new IS2 telephotos let alone a concept one ! A non working dummy of the lens was on display here in NZ during the rugby world cup.
