Pentax has today announced the launch of the Optio S5i. The five megapixel update of the S4i has a new 'coarse' handgrip and textured body to convey a 'sense of quality'. It retains a plethora of scene modes found on its predecessor, ideal for beginners, and now includes a sports mode. The S5i incorporates Pentax's sliding lens mechanism allowing for a camera that is 21mm wide. The Optio S5i will be available in September.
August 25, 2004 PENTAX Corporation introduces the new Optio S5i – a compact digital camera that features 5.0 effective megapixels, a 3X optical zoom lens, stylish design and ultra-compact, lightweight appeal.
Developed in line with the Optio series concept of being “stylish and ultra-compact to enable it to be worn like an accessory”, the Optio S5i features a higher megapixel count and has been improved for further user friendliness by reflecting various opinions from our users.
1. A stylish, ultra-compact body that makes users want to wear it anywhere, any time
The quality aluminum alloy used for the body has been treated to achieve a range of different textures in order to convey a sense of high quality and the grip has been enhanced through the use of a coarse texture. Available in Cool Silver and Indigo Blue, both colors of the Optio S5i convey understated elegance and feature an attractive spindle effect.
Despite its 3X optical zoom lens, the OptioS5i has a light weight of just 105 grams*1 and ultra-compact dimensions of 84 (W) x 52 (H) x 20.5 (D)mm*2 made possible through use of the unique Sliding Lens System.

2. The power of 5.0 effective megapixels
For high-precision imaging, the OptioS5i features the power of 5.0 effective megapixels. Furthermore it employs an smc PENTAX lens that delivers high-clarity by suppressing ghosting and flare, and has primary color filter that reproduces vivid, natural colors.
3. Large, easy-to-view 1.8-inch LCD monitor
Despite its ultra-compact body, the OptioS5i incorporates a large 1.8-inch, TFT LCD monitor that offers an approximate 100% field of view with around 85,000 pixels. It makes confirmation of composition or focus easy at the time of shooting and enhances image confirmation during playback.
4. Quick button
The Quick button function allows the user to designate one item from a choice of 10 to act as a shortcut button to a selected function. By default, the OptioS5i comes with Green mode designated for the Quick button, which leaves all settings to the camera with the exception of zooming.
Items that can be designated for the Quick button: Green mode, USER mode, Movie mode, Mode Palette, white balance, mode memory, resizing, trimming, image/voice copy, and format.
5. Diverse shooting modes, plus a new Sport mode
In addition to the conventionally available shooting modes, the OptioS5i features a new “Sport” mode that sets the camera for shutter speed-priority to enable spur of the moment shooting for moving subjects. This, like all other shooting modes is easy to select on the Mode Palette, which displays all mode icons on the LCD monitor all at once. Indeed, despite the fact that the OptioS5i offers an impressive selection of 21 modes, the easy-to-see display makes it easy to select the one you want, whenever you need it.
6. Pan focusing – a new addition to focus modes
Pan focusing ensures clear focusing from a close range to infinity, providing a better chance of capturing the action in quickly disappearing photo opportunities.
7. Battery charger stand that simultaneously charges batteries still in the camera and spares too
The battery charger stand is capable of charging batteries while they are inside the camera. Furthermore, it can house spare batteries, which begin charging as soon as the ones inside the camera are fully charged.
8. TV playback with remote control
The user can command the playback of images on a TV via two optionally available remote controller units. Remote control F can be used to control image advance by pressing the shutter release button, while remote control E can be used to control image advance with the shutter release button, and image rewind with the zoom button.
