According to our analysis of CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Association) data, camera shipments by CIPA members (the majority of digital camera manufacturers) are up 93% for the period January to May 2003 compared to the same period last year. This is a 45% increase by value. In contrast film camera shipments are down 20%, interchangeable lenses down 11%. The biggest single leap was to Europe which took an amazing 4.5 million units (up 149%). Total shipments of digital cameras from January to May 2003 had a value of $3.43 billion, film cameras and lenses totaled $703 million. CIPA was established on July 1 2002 and has taken over from JCIA which was dissolved in June 2002.
The graph above is very revealing, it tells us many things. Firstly that overall digital camera shipments are clearly soaring year on year, almost doubling for the same period so far this year. That digital camera shipments now dwarf those of film cameras. That both Japan and North America are growing at a steady rate. And that the surprise is the huge leap in the number of digital cameras shipped to Europe, about 2.5 times as many (4.5 million units versus 1.8 million for the same period last year). As you can see Europe has now overtaken North America so far this year (although it will be interesting to analyze a full years worth of data to get the full picture.
Some interesting facts:
Note that the CIPA (JCIA) data for digital camera shipments in 2002 does not distinguish Asia separately hence the lack of a digital camera bar for Asia for 2002. You can find our raw data below. This data has been calculated based on CIPA's own reports.
