Nikon Press release:

Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce THREE new additions to their outstanding range of superior AF-S Nikkor super telephoto lenses designed for sport and nature photographers.

In listening to the wishes of photographers, Nikon have succeeded in dramatically reducing weight AND achieving closer focusing distances than their predecessors.

By implementing magnesium die-cast in the lens body construction (as used on Nikon's top professional camera bodies as the D1X, D1H and F5) considerable weight savings- equivalent to an extra body in the photographers bag- can be achieved without sacrificing Nikon's rugged field proven construction resistant to both dust and water.

The lenses give away nothing in performance and quality: boasting improved SWM (Silent Wave Motor) technology for faster and quiet AF operation and three ED (Extra low Dispersion) glass elements. The nine blade rounded diaphragm delivers soft, round, out of focus highlights for superior results whether you use digital or film.

From the outside, the lenses maintain the cosmetic appearance of the smooth-finished AF-S Nikkor 300 f/4D IF-ED and AF-S Nikkor 300 f/2.8D IF-ED II lenses featuring a larger focus distance window and handsome brass coloured name plate.

Supplied as always in sturdy trunk cases for safe transport in car boot or airline hold and with a new lightweight nylon drawstring hood they also can be carried easily on the shoulder with a new wide body style strap.

An extra monopod foot mount, drop in NC 52mm screw thread filter and holder and separate gelatine filter holder completes the full accessory set.

In short these new lightweight additions to the photographer's arsenal of Nikkor AF-S super-telephoto lenses will be appreciated for their fast action and superb out-of focus backgrounds that will make your subjects really stand out from the crowd.

AF-S Nikkor 400 f/2.8D IF-ED II. Available from July 2001.

First up comes the new AF-S Nikkor 400 f/2.8D IF-ED II. Quickly becoming the standard digital sports photographer's telephoto lens the already 'lightest in its class' AF-S Nikkor 400 f/2.8D IF-ED lens weight is now reduced by a further 360g to just 4,400g- now almost a kilogram lighter than the competition.

The AF-S Nikkor 400 f/2.8D IF-ED II inherits all of the superior image quality of its predecessor with the added benefit of closer focusing down to 3.5m in AF mode (3.4m in MF) compared to it's predecessor's 3.8m. Maximum reproduction ratio: 0.13x*.

AF-S Nikkor 500 f/4D IF-ED II. Available from July 2001

The new AF-S Nikkor 500 f/4D IF-ED II now weighs in some 570g lighter at 3,230g, with closer focusing distance down to just 4.6m in AF (4.4 in MF mode), compared to it's predecessor's 5.0m. Maximum reproduction ratio: 0.12x* in AF (0.13x* in MF).

AF-S Nikkor 600 f/4D IF-ED II Available from September 2001

The new AF-S Nikkor 600 f/4D IF-ED II achieves another weight milestone; an incredible lightweight hand-hold able 4,730*g, some 1,170 lighter than the existing AF-S Nikkor 600 f/4 lens: equivalent to the weight of a D1 body! This weight is now equivalent to the AF-S Nikkor 400 f/2.8D IF-ED lens.

Closest focusing is now down to 5.6m in AF; 5.4m in MF, (compared to 6.0m in the existing AF-S Nikkor 600 f/4D IF-ED). Maximum reproduction ratio 0.12x* AF/MF.
