Toshiba announce 512MB CompactFlash
Toshiba has today announced that it is to add the 512MB CompactFlash card to range. The new storage card will also be available to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) customers, who will have a larger selection of solutions to meet storage requirements. The cards are available now to OEM's only for $499.

Strengthening its role as a leading supplier of flash memory solutions, Toshiba America Electronic Components Inc. (TAEC) with its parent company Toshiba Corp. (Toshiba) today announced the introduction of a 512 megabyte (MB) CompactFlash(TM) card.
Designated the THNCF512MAA, the new high-density removable storage card brings original equipment manufacturer (OEM) customers a larger selection of solutions to meet their removable storage requirements.
The 512MB CompactFlash complements Toshiba's existing lineup of small-form factor storage solutions including SmartMedia(TM) and SD Card devices as well as lower-density CompactFlash cards. In addition to these small-form factor cards, Toshiba offers a variety of high-density NAND flash devices available in Thin Small Outline Package (TSOP) devices ranging in densities from 64-Megabit (Mb) to 1-Gigabit (Gb).
"Toshiba's NAND flash memory is widely used in many of the leading small-form factor storage cards due to its high performance and low cost per bit design,'' said Jackie Traeumer, senior business development manager, Flash Products, at TAEC.
"With the addition of the 512MB CompactFlash device, Toshiba continues to push the envelope, offering one of the industry's broadest lineups of NAND flash memory devices and small-form factor cards.''
Toshiba's 512MB CompactFlash card can be used in digital still and video cameras, audio players, personal digital assistants (PDAs), solid state disk drives, and embedded storage solutions.
As a pioneer in the development of flash memory, Toshiba combines a low-power, high-performance NAND flash memory solution with the CompactFlash Type-1 form factor to create a high-density, thin device with rugged solid state operation. Like Toshiba's 128MB SmartMedia, the 512MB CompactFlash was developed using Toshiba's 0.16 micron ((mu)m) CMOS process technology, which has been in production since the fourth quarter of 2000.
"Toshiba is committed to increasing capacity in order to meet the growing demands in the marketplace for all types of NAND flash memory, ranging from small-form factor storage solutions to discrete TSOP components,'' continued Traeumer.
"During 2000, the semiconductor industry as a whole posted impressive growth of more than 30 percent over 1999. However, NAND flash memory was the shining star, growing 139 percent,'' said Benjamin Thompson, senior analyst, Gartner Dataquest.
"Consumers are becoming much more comfortable with digital devices including cameras, MP3 players and PDAs. As flash bit densities increase and prices per megabyte continue to fall, an increasing number of applications will take advantage of solid state storage. Gartner Dataquest forecasts that NAND flash revenues will grow to nearly $10 billion by 2004, a 75 percent compound annual growth rate.''
Toshiba's THNCF512MAA 512MB CompactFlash card is manufactured with Toshiba's 1Gb NAND Flash devices. Incorporating four of the 1Gb memory devices and a controller, the THNCF512MAA achieves a sustained write speed of 3.2 megabytes per second (MB/s) and a sustained read speed of 5.4MB/s. The device is housed in a 3.3 millimeter (mm) thick card to meet the requirements of the CompactFlash Association Type-I Specification.
Part Number THNCF512MAA
Dimensions 36.4mm (L) x 42.8mm (W) x 3.3mm (H)
Process 0.16-micron ((mu)m) CMOS process technology
Configuration 4 pieces of 1Gb NAND Flash memory
Sustained Write Speed 3.2MB/s
Sustained Read Speed 5.4MB/s
Pricing and Availability
Samples and production quantities of Toshiba's THNCF512MAA 512MB CompactFlash are available now in OEM quantities, with sample pricing at $499 each. Toshiba will sell the CompactFlash cards directly to OEMs and channel partners to address retail and other channels under their respective brands.
NAND Flash Background
Toshiba is a recognized pioneer in flash technology and invented NAND flash technology in 1987. NAND flash is becoming the storage media of choice for solid state storage applications because of its high-speed programming capability, high-speed erasing, small block size and low cost.
The sequential nature (serial access) of NAND-based flash memory provides
notable advantages for these block-oriented data storage applications.
Toshiba's NAND flash memory products are optimized for general solid state
storage, image file storage and audio for applications such as solid state
disk drives, digital cameras, set-top boxes and industrial storage.
