Nikon Announces Powerful New Scanner Range for 2001

Nikon Europe is proud to announce a new range of desktop film scanners for availability later this year. The range comprises of three models that all feature Nikon's own solid-state LED-based illumination system known worldwide for stability and colour accuracy. Building on the established success of the revolutionary image-recovery system "Digital Ice", these three scanners are the first to incorporate two more software miracles from the same stable - "Digital GEM" and "Digital ROC" - that will reduce film grain and return, damaged and faded film to as-new condition.

All three scanners break further new ground with the incorporation of a Nikkor Scanner ED lens within their optical systems. Nikkor ED glass lenses are normally reserved for professional SLR lenses and brings exceptional optical performance and clarity to desktop scanning. Following Nikon's philosophy of Total Image Quality, the optical system of these new scanners can now be of the same quality as the lens that took the original image. Combined with a new high-stability precision mechanism to support scanning at up to 4000 dpi on two models and 2900 dpi on the entry model, Nikon have once again raised the standard of excellence to continue their dominance of the desktop film scanner market.

In terms of ease of use and versatility, each scanner offers something new to its' own target market. For the photo-enthusiast who is looking for a bridge from film to the world of digital imaging, the Coolscan IV ED connects simply and quickly to PC and Macs computers by USB and offers scanning of transparency and negative film in 35mm and APS formats at 2900 dpi and 12-bit resolution.

For the professional user, the productive Super Coolscan 4000 ED will deliver a 14-bit per channel image at 4000 dpi, accommodating 35mm, APS film and with optional adapters, uncut rolls of 35 mm film (up to 40 exposures) or batches of up to 50 slides in an auto-feeder. Digital ICE, ROC and GEM (known under the collective name of "ICE3" ) are, of course, included and literally give this new scanner the "power to restore the past".

High scanning speeds have been maintained in spite of the impressive data payload delivered per slide (approx 127MB at full resolution) and the natural interface choice of IEEE1394 gives rapid trouble-free connection to both Macintosh and PC computers.

The top end of the New Nikon range is crowned by the versatile Super Coolscan 8000 ED, a new multi-format scanner that boasts the ability to scan medium format, 35mm, panorama, 16mm and medical slides at 4000 dpi and 14 bit resolution. Capable of delivering files of well over 700MB from a single image, this compact desktop model now breaches the territory formerly reserved for drum scanners whilst bringing a new high-quality, high-performance solution to a multiple of professional and industrial situations. The rapid and easy to use IEEE1394 interface, Digital ICE3, compact footprint and competitive pricing confirms that this scanner will permit service bureaux to extend their portfolio and will also bring the possibility of in-house multi-format scanning to many new users.

Digital ICE, Digital ROC and Digital GEM are trademarks of ASF Technologies. All other trademarks respected. The SuperCoolscan 4000 ED and 8000 ED are supplied with an IEEE1394 interface card for Windows 2000/ME/SE and Macintosh computers.
