The illuminator automatically lights up the subject when
conducting autofocus in dim light or in the dark (works
with current Nikon AF SLR cameras) 2) Cancellation also possible |
| Ready light | 1)
Lights up when flash is recycled and ready to fire 2) Blinks when flash fires at its maximum output, indicating exposure caution |

3D Multi-Sensor Balanced Fill-Flash for D1
The Speedlight sets off a series of Monitor Pre-flashes before the main flash fires. The pre-flashes are detected by each of the five segments of the D1's TTL Multi Sensor. As a result, the main subject is properly illuminated by flash, and the background comes out looking natural for a well-balanced, superbly lit shot.
Since the D1 uses a CCD instead of film, TTL flash control has been redesigned to ensure the same high-quality results offered by the 3D Multi-Sensor Balanced Fill-Flash feature of current Nikon SLRs.
The D1 employs a shutter blade located in front of the CCD. This allows TTL monitoring of the pre-flashes just before exposure and even after the reflex mirror goes up.
A range of data is transmitted to the SB-28DX automatically (when using a CPU lens*). Transmitted data includes: sensitivity, aperture value, focal length of the lens in use, and exposure compensation value.
The following functions are available
depending on the type of lens in use and/or camera settings:
3D Multi-Sensor Balanced Fill-Flash
for D1 (with D-type AF Nikkors)
In addition determining the results of Monitor Pre-flashes,
Distance Information is also evaluated for more precise TTL balanced
fill-flash control.
Multi-Sensor Balanced Fill-Flash
for D1 (with non-D-type AF Nikkors)
Delivers a balanced exposure of the main subject and background
according to the results of the Monitor Pre-flashes (for main
subject exposure) and Matrix Metering (for background exposure).
Centre-Weighted Fill-Flash
for D1 (AI-type Nikkors)
Delivers a balanced exposure of the main subject and background
according to the results of the Monitor Pre-flashes (for the main
subject exposure) and Centre-Weighted Metering (for the background
exposure).
Standard TTL Flash for D1 (All
compatible lenses)
The Centre-Weighted Meter, instead of the TTL Multi Sensor, detects
monitor Pre- flashes. Flash exposure is thus controlled without
balancing the foreground and background exposure.
Flash output level compensation from -3 to +1 EV in 1/3 EV steps. The compensation value can be confirmed via the rear LCD panel. Since the D1 shows the results immediately after shutter release, photographers can easily obtain the image that they want. (Can be used simultaneously with the camera body's flash output level compensation feature.)
AA (Auto Aperture) Flash
AA (Auto Aperture) Flash is possible when connected to the Nikon D1 with a CPU lens* attached.
A range of data is transmitted to the SB-28DX automatically (when using a CPU lens*). Transmitted data includes sensitivity, aperture value, focal length of the lens in use and exposure compensation value. The SB-28DX uses this data to control flash output via the light sensor on the front of the unit.
Non-TTL Auto Flash operation is automatically selected when using non-CPU lenses.
Flash output level compensation is possible from -3 to +1 EV in 1/3 EV steps. The compensation value can be confirmed via the rear LCD panel. (Can be used simultaneously with the camera body's flash output level compensation feature.)
* CPU lenses refer to those AF Nikkor, D-type Nikkor, or AI-P Nikkor lenses that feature a built-in microcomputer and CPU contacts.
